Post by: da_boom on January 06, 2011, 12:12:20 AM
even though bike is sorned at the mo i still have it insured incase someone decides to nick it. my new policy states that i must have it chained overnight 10pm to 6am which probably is a good idea. anyone recommendations?

When you have it chained up, would that be inside or outside. If you have it chained in a garage for example its going to be pretty safe because it would be too time consuming for someone to work on the chain after opening the garage etc, etc.

However if you have it chained up outside you are more limited as to how secure you can make it. If someone wants your bike they will take it what ever you do. The most common practice is for the thief to quite simply (along with thier mates) pick it up and chuck it in the back of a van and off it goes never to be seen again.  The bikes probably worth more as spares and it can be made anonymous quite quickly by a professional bike thief.

If you do decide to chain it make sure the chain is so tight that it does not rest on the ground otherwise it will just be chiseled & sledge hammered and broken in seconds.

A tracker is a good option. The system is very reliable, and once boosted can be picked up by anything with tracker fitted from a Police car to the helicopter. Not many vehicles with tracker fitted remain missing for long.

Another excellent system is something called Crystal Ball, http://www.crystalball.tv/

This system is so accurate it will even tell you which street a vehicle is parked on whereas Tracker just gives you a general area and then you have to systamatically search each street which can be time consuming. A well known trick of car thieves is to park a stolen vehicle in a busy car park for 24 hours and see if it generates any Police interest. They will work on the basis that if the vehicle has not been recovered by the Police within 24 hours it does not have Tracker fitted otherwise it would have been found.

Crystal ball goes one step further, in that as soon as there is any unauthorised movement of your vehicle the system calls you and asks you for confirmation that the vehicle is being moved legitimately. With this system because it is so fast if the vehicle has just been stolen the Police are immediately contacted and more often than not your vehicle will be located on route with the thieves still present.

Insurance companies seem to like either of these two systems.

Hope thats of some help.

I like that crystallball stuff.

As to the original OP, I have a monster gold chain with ground anchor. Does the trick. From LW's post, not sure if these can be broken that easily with a chisel and hammer. I'm worried if they can  :o

NB, very few of the chains, even the really heavy duty ones are any good. I saw a demo once with a pro bike thief and how easily he could render the chains useless. Whether the chains were £20 or £150 most of them with as little as 15-30 seconds he was away with the bike.

Bad news.

Looks like you're correct LW (not that I doubted you!). Seems to be plenty of reviews on the internet about how easy they are break with a cropper.

What about if I rig a 240v charge through the chain?  ;D

I think a decent chain around the front wheel, nice and tight, OFF the ground is a good deterrent at least !
