Title: Riding boots
Post by: Kwikasfuki on January 04, 2011, 06:47:13 PM
As mentioned in another thread my old Hein Gericke boots have finally stared give up the stitching which is letting the cold air in. I have thought about getting them repaired as they are super comfortable (RIDE magazine voted them the best boot when I purchased them way back in 2003), but the cost would probably be expensive. I bought the boots for ~£100 so spending £50 to repair them maybe false economy as they are getting old.

Hein Gericke sell the Daytona Shair (http://www.hein-gericke.co.uk/shop/product_info.php/cPath/3_138/products_id/5307) for £279.99 which are Gore-Tex but expensive. However, the fit is superb and I'm temped in buying these. I can't find them cheaper on the net as they are exclusive to HG. They appear to be a rebranded version of the Daytona GTX Roadstar (http://www.grandprixlegends.com/motorcycle-gear/motorcycle-gear/motorcyle-boots/daytona-road-star-gtx-motorcycle-boot-black.html) which comes in at a whopping £339.99

I can see the Road stars on eBay for £229 + £10 shipping from Germany. I was thinking of buying the HG branded versions just for peace of mind rather than saving £40. However, I can get the 19% German VAT knocked off if I'm UK VAT registered (which I am). That brings the price to £190 delivered which is £90 cheaper than HG and £150 cheaper than the RRP for the Road stars.

Anyone recommend any other boots that I should be trying? At the moment the Daytons Road Star is in the lead ...

I use Sidi Vertigo Boots and have done so now for about four years.

The only problem I have ever had with them is that one of the zips failed. I contacted Sidi through Hein Gericke as it happens, Sidi sent me out a new zip, (free of charge) and a local cobbler charged me £5 to stitch it in.

I think they cost me just under £200 when I bought them. Plenty of support in the boot to protect your feet just in case you go for a slide down the road.  :o

I bought HG's cheaper Shell-Tex boot, the Bullson about 6 weeks ago - http://www.hein-gericke.co.uk/shop/product_info.php/products_id/3948.

They have been perfect in the rain, snow and general winter-ness. I am sure I paid £170 for them, but looking at the link above, they are down to £115.

Recommended by me.

Martin.

You can't beat the Daytonas.  The pair I'm using now are older than my 8 year old son and they are still in good condition.  Before these I was buying Alpinestars and other types of sport boot every 18 months or so (back in my days as a sports bike rider).

I went for the Daytonas. In the end bought them from HG (after I moaned about the price and negotiated a discount  ;D)

Go for Altbergs my friend .. the pair I have now, as discussed in another thread, are about 13 years old, and have been great ... a bit boring in that they are just plain black leather but they have never let me down. Wax them when the weather turns for winter, and when the soles finally wore out I sent them back to Altbergs in Yorkshire ( I think ) and for £65 they came back refurbished.. new soles, velcro, and Gore tex liners .. I love em !

Not a million miles away then if we ever have a meet up North or a trip out to the East Coast on one fine day.

If you are a size 8 and these are too tight for you, won't you need a size 9 rather than a size 7 as you have suggested, or am I misunderstanding you?

I think he meant the boots would suit someone size 7 as they are a tight 8

(reminds me of a joke but not on here!)

Tell you one thing about them , they got decent heel & soles on them. If you got short legs like me , helps when you put your foot down. That's why I brought a pair , to see what there like.
