Title: visiting the Isles
Post by: martin_14 on April 26, 2012, 06:40:44 PM
Lads,
I happen to have selected you fine country for my yearly season-opening tour, crossing the south of England first, then Wales, then Ireland, then Scotland and then back to the continent.
One of my concerns is that I will visit many cities and I'd like to leave the helmet with the bike. Due to carrying capacity, I'm not sure I will always have place on the top case to put it in, so I was thinking of using a lock and cable to attach it to the bike or some other helmet lock attached to the rack of the bike (it's a solid aluminium aftermarket one, not the plastic :shit: that come with the bike).
Do you think that this is safe? Will I find the helmet there when I'm back from a couple of hours walk through the city? Any particular city I should avoid?
Thanks a lot in advance...

Well the fine city of St Albans should be OK, but you can always park ya bike at my house, tis but a short walk to the Town.

TBH anywhere that ones lid is gonna go walkies, isn't really a place you want to vist in the first place.

Sad to say, but you'd probably end up with it nicked, damaged or a deposit left in it!  :shit:

It would be perfectly safe in Bradford if you left it on the bike because the scroats and twoccers here when out on two wheels don't use helmets they just wrap a scarfe around their face and head, it offers the same amount of protection apparently.

We always lock the helmets to the front wheel for hours at a time ( Panniers full of stuff ), you would be better off with a heavier chain though not a cycle type cable, i'm sure you will be ok

I always carry my helmet with me. find it comes in very handy if a fight breaks out, you can wallop some sod with it and if he gets back up you can allways put it on ..!  the odd time I do leave the helmet with the bike, I allways put a good quality cable lock through up and under the chin piece and through the front wheel. remember this is only to protect it from the "opportunist" if someone decides they want your helmet and are armed with a set a off bolt cutters, then I'm afraid the helmet is history  but there's a bright side..! if you catch them in the act, you can always use the bolt cutters to remove something off there's

You can't really predict if helmets locked to the bike will be safe or not, as there are scrotes everywhere these days

When you park your bike I would take the helmet with you, that way its safe

Big thick chain through the front wheel would be fine !
Enjoy the tour !
