Title: My experience with the Motax hugger.
Post by: Max Way on April 22, 2012, 10:28:16 AM
Firstly they will not communicate with you or answer any emails ( at least not in English, I don't know about French ).

This is the parcel on arrival

Mounting hardware

Mounting holes don't line up on LHS bracket

The fitted hugger

Overall the quality is disappointing - the mounting holes in the LHS bracket are out about 5mm and the same bracket needs to be about 20mm longer as the hugger virtually rubs on the LHS and has decent clearance on the RHS.
The surface finish on the fiberglass was a bit dimpled and marked but this was not really noticeable when on fitted, also there were quite a few loose glass fibers falling off the underside.

I've removed it from the bike and eventually will get around to fabricating a new LHS bracket which is 20mm longer to lift the hugger up for equal clearance all round.

The hugger looks to cover a larger arc of the tyre than the Skidmarks hugger - I found removing the wheel with the hugger in place barely possible but a real PITA.

If I was buying another hugger I'd go for the Skidmarks as I think it's cheaper, the company will gladly answer your emails and people don't seem to have problems with holes not lining up  and brackets needing to be a bit longer like I did and it's made in the UK.

Anyway just my opinion YMMV as they say.

How much was the Motax hugger?

Pretty disappointed to see the quality isn't up to standard.

It does look a tight fit so not surprised wheel removal is a PITA. I need to check what brand mine is cause I never have issues with the wheel removal.

162 euro - I think that's a bit dearer than the Skidmarx.

Very shoddy workmanship & service.   :2guns:

I have the Skidmarx one fitted to my 2011, fits fine, equal gap all round, wheel comes off without problems.

i had a dodgy rear hugger from skidmarx,it had what looked like a couple of hairline crack's on the top finish, one area on the top looked like it had been sanded down with fine wet & dry & blown over, there was a couple of indent's in the top,
my 1st thought was just fit it as you wont notice the mark's when it's fitted, then it got the better of me,i emailed them about my finding's & they DID REPLY to my email's very promptly,i sent it back & they did indeed replace it,the replacement was in good order.however it did cost me £11.25 to post it back,WHICH WAS NOT RETURNABLE.

Very disapointed on the quality, the parcel condition we can put down to its trip literally half way around the globe. They were crap at communicating with you but when i contacted them on your behalf they replied straight away and even gave me your tracking details, maybe they have a problem with your emails.
im certainly now concerned about ordering one , id love to hear from someone else to see if the quality is a one off.
The ONLY reason I wanted a motax over another brand was that it covers so much more of the wheel than the others , which is much needed on the Gtr due to excessive rear wheel fling-off.

I find using water after it gets dirty resolves the problem

Mr tapps, I find it totally unexceptable that you needed to pay for the return postage when it was clearly flawed when made, and sent out to you in that state..! I would be phoning skidmarx and asking "why are you taking the piss" and unless I'm refunded my postage cost, it would cost them a dam sight more by the time I put as many potential buyers as possible. sorry about the :hammer: but theres two things I can't stand.. being ripped off and bossy women..! which would explain, why I've just chucked this wobbler. the wife as just walk in

They should refund the postage under the distance selling regs.

I recently fitted a Skidmarx hugger purchased from a member on here and once I got the right sized attachment bolts in place it fits very nicely, and after a wet run for part of todays ride out it seems to have worked very well.

I've had this type of hugger before on previous GTRs, and they are good, although its true to say that the Motax variety does cover more of the rear tyre, and presumably provides abit more protection

I only noticed recently that the shock on my GTR is covered in a sock. I've seen them on Ebay, £25ish. Some sort of neoprene concoction. That'll offer a bit of extra protection.

Yes they are but theres only one way to fit it anyway because the hole for mounting to the suspension link is bigger than the other two holes.

Keep meaning to source one - on my ZX12 I bought a black one off Ebay and painted it kawasaki green  --- hugger and paint/ primer etc about £50    --- a fair price for a bit of either moulded plastic or fibreglass !  I won't be paying £100+ for one though  - I'll just wash the bike more often !

- question is  - on a 13.5 K motorbike, why isn't there one on as standard ????
