Title: Warped brake disks
Post by: BigAlan on April 08, 2012, 03:40:36 PM
So here i am in Dortmund Germany and having done some 500 miles i have this "rotating" noise cominf from the front and at 80mph the resonation or vibration is making my hands go numb with pins and needles.

Never had thism in the UK whilc poodling around atb well below 70mph but over here the fgaster i go the worse it gets, god knows what it will be like at 100mph but i will find out tomorrow.

Has to be warped disks i reckon.

Unless you know different?

HI Alan,

Check you haven't lost a wheel weight first, not unknown for them to come off and would give similar symptoms. Don't assume the paranoia of others, hope you get it sorted(cheaply)

regards Coman

Warped discs would make the brakes pulse when applied. I didn't get any numbness when mine warped.

I'm with coman on this. Check weights first. Secondly, give the discs a good clean and get any muck out, especially nr the calipers

My Discs warped and I had no vibration, but the brakes pulsed like mad when applied.

I had a new tyre fitted a while back and they didn't balance the wheel properly, this caused a bad vibration that increased as I went faster.

Get both wheels balanced and I think it will fix things.

my warped discs started like  a pulsing effect when braking and felt normal at other times like the others on here have said could be the wheel balance  is out also some gtrs are prone to front wheel bearing failure

Yup, could be bearings as well. Personally, I think stock bearings are shite

I can understand the vibration could be due to a wheel weight but not the noise side as this increases with speed. I will look later, on the way to Colditz today so will have to put up with it until I get back.

Sounds like a bi- plane when at speed.

Put the bike on centre stand, get someone to push down on rear, and then check front wheel for any play. Sounds like bearings

as Kwikasfuki said earlier bearings are shite quality 2 year ago when i had a 57 plate gtr i swopped the tyres got the front wheel out and the outside coating on the front wheel bearing was flaking off if this had got inside the bearing it would of preamature failure i could not believe its condition :agree:

Bit of a worry :undecided:  Still, I am not hearing any clutch or gearbox issues mentioned  :sweatdrop:

All the best with getting it sorted BigAlan.  At least you are in  Germany's top brewing city.

Well back home today having done in excess of 1600 miles in eight days, the noise from the front wheel is now so loud it's time for ear plugs, the vibration in the hands is terrible at 70mph and it gives you pins and needles and your hand goes numb, at 60 mph if you pull the front brake on it does pulse, and it snatches the disk, even if you put the rear brake on is snatches.

It's due a service so they can take a look then, but as for a comfortable bike then nothing I have ever had comes close.

Apart from a puncture which a local garage mended for me all was fun.
