Title: croatia bosnia herzegovinia
Post by: Essex Boy on March 28, 2012, 10:15:33 PM
Anyone been to Croatia or Bosnia by bike recently ?.

I can't get insurance for my May expedition to these 2 beautiful countries, as not in the EEC they tell me at the insurance broker I use. Don't want to change my Ins policy mid year so will be looking to buy cover on the border.

Any one done this recently and wheres the best place and how much does it cost.

Entering Croatia right on the coast from Slovaki.

Cheers,

EB.

I went that way a couple of years ago on the way to Vallelunga WSB, down to Zadar and ferry across to Italy. Great roads, nice people. Cant help you with Ins advice as I always make sure that my policy covers all of EU inc the old Eastern Europe. Have a great trip

Hi Coman37. Thanks. But where did you get the insurance from. I can't find any company interested to give an extension to include Bosnia especially.

Hi EB,

I've been insured with E-bike for several years, dont know about getting an extension, I think you are either covered or your not!

hy essex boy,

i made a trip in serbia, muntenegru and croatia last year.Croatia it's paradise for motorcycling....the adriatic coast(road) has 700 km,but it takes around 6 days to see it all,the average speed it is around 40 - 60 km/h.I  made the trip in august and there are a lot off turist, and the road was full of cars. The best place to go is ISTRIA(rijeka it's a wonderful city,a small one),then you must see the PLITVICE PARK, then go down to dubrovnik,a city fortress on the see.The price (for food, acomodation, gasoline, etc)are lower in comparition with italy or france. And if you arrived in dubrovnik maybe you have time to go in muntenegru and you can see KOTOR GOLF....it's just a perfect place to rest for a night or two.
in Croatia there are 2 high way one starts from west to east an another to north to south, but you will miss the ADRIATIC ROAD COAST.

best regardes

we had the same Insurance problem 2 years ago when we wanted to scoot through Lichtenstein... most insurance companies will only insure you for EU countries, or countries that have signed up to some sort of EU charter....

There are specialist companies about but they are bloody expensive as each trip would need to underwritten.... if you are dead keen to go, you'll have to find a 'risk management underwriters'

You could try the guided tour firms for info on how they handle it for their customers.

Thanks all above but no solutions yet eh !. Think I will have to rock up at a border and try to buy TP only cover. Great blog Sebastian. Thanks for the warning that Croatia is going to slow us down. Guess its the sites. Went to Rovinj with the wife last year and thought it just gorgeous and of course a bit mysterious being strange language and ex Former Yugo.

Thanks for tips on where to go too. Will have to put that in our sat nav co-ordinates.

Cant stay for 6 days though, Wife will expect me back after 10 days on the road.

We were in Croatia (http://thewellers.us/trips/Europe08/Europe08part2.htm) and Bosnia (http://thewellers.us/trips/Europe08/Europe08part3.htm) in 2008. Our insurance already covered us for Croatia but we couldn't get cover for Bosnia or Serbia before we left without changing our insurance policy. It was easy enough to buy at the border, well, it was easy enough to buy a piece of paper at the border which said we were insured, well, it was easy enough to buy a piece of paper at the border containing writing in a foreign language that we were told was our insurance certificate. It was quite cheap for Bosnia but a lot more in Serbia; worth every penny though.

Hi All

Were off to the Dalmation coast and have been told by the trip organisers that you can pick up insurance at the Bosnian  border for 28Euros. Well, as previously commented, you pays your money and takes your chance.
My "Swinton" insurance covers Croatia and Slovenia. As for breakdown they have an escort van with trailer and a place for my spare tyre as it never goes the distance!! Just in case we are in some inhospitable country.

Come along they still have places!

Kevin, kwakamo and Paul G thanks for your advice and help. Absolutely brilliant and shows how priceless this GTR forum is. The trip that Paul is doing is just about exactly what we have planned for the 3 of us. 2 of us, Dickie and I have done quite a few tours now, Ireland, Europe, Morocco, India and so feel ok to put this one together on our own. Taking Dickies nephew with us.

Mind you the Horizons web site has given us some great ideas for stop overs. Will be putting those in our Sat Nav too.

From our past experience I have to say Morroco over the Atlas mountains is best we have ever done so far.

Will be looking into safetravel too. Sounds a bit like Holiday travel rather than motorbike TPL cover but lets see.

Thanks to all on this blog.  Great stuff and really appreciated.
