I've been offered a new 2012 model for £11,999. Alternatively, I can get one of the older model registered new for 2012 (gives more colour choice) at the same price.
I've been offered 5k for my bike, leaving £7k outstanding which I could fund at the 2% offer currently available.
I am tempted by this offer even taking into account the initial depreciation. I can kiss 2k off straight away, but as I intend to keep the bike for 4 years at least it makes little difference.
I've said I don't mind a bike that is a year old as long as its low mileage but there aren't many of these about it seems.
Any advice on what to do? Still in two minds as I love my 08 model, but can see in a few years the build quality deteriorating slightly.
Good news to hear you are about to upgrade !
For me I would have the NEW 12 model despite the depreciation ... if you plan to keep the bike for a few years then the drop in value won't matter and you will enjoy the bike even more !
life is to short to want something and not have it  if you can get the 2% interest rate on the balance, and the payments are manageable, the question you should be asking yourself is.. why not...! the depreciation is the down side  but there are benifits! you know it's been run in right, and you know the history from the start, one owner from new when you decide to sell is allways a good selling point. I prefer to buy new because I tend to keep the vehicles for a long time. your happy with the gtr1400 so you will most likley will keep it for 5 years. I would go for the new model. by the time you take into consideration the use you will have over 5 years and the fact it is the newer model and therefore worth more, together with the fact you've had the newer model over of the older model will out way the depreciation anyway
I'd be happy to do whatever you feel comfortable with. If you're happy with losing a few grand straight off, then go for the 2012 newer model. Don't forget though you could buy hawkeyes 2009 for yours plus £2000!
If you do buy new though just promise me you'll buy a decent colour like magnesium and not that manky green that Kawasaki are trying to shift stock of. :whistling:
Just do it!!! You know you want to!!!! (which colour are you going for??)
Green obviously ..........
2011 colours will have a lower resale value against the same milegae/condition 2012 bike when you come to sell in 4/5 years time, the 2012 model is definately the one to go for new; UNLESS you can find one for a grand less of course! Our local Kawasaki dealer has just sold a navy blue old stock bike at £10,995 so they are about!
Try checking a few dealers for new "old" stock if there is a colour you prefer, but definately the 2012 if there is no price difference.
Good point Nigel. In that case its either the dark red or black. I did want the red but in the candy red. Otherwise its the blue which I'm defo not keen on
Here's the red

Sell your bike privately at £6k, then go in and offer them £11k, £5k deposit,£6k on cheap finance, £1000 cash in your pocket for shiny bits

must admit I do like the new 2012 dark red colour it's nearly as nice as the magnesium colour  just as well, theses 2 colours wearn't around in 2010 or I would I've been in a right pickle  If you've made a decision between the 2011 and the 2012 model and colour preference. then be good chap, and put us out of our misery
Asif,
Just to throw another option into the mix, keep yours for another year and buy the 2013 which (if Kawa's normal model cycles are to be trusted) should be a 'new' model rather than a colour change?
A little less weight, a few more HP from the latest ZZR bottom end, and hopefully a better screen and cruise. Dreaming perhaps :mfr_lol:
Martin.
That's what my mate said as well. His view is there a floor level at which the bike won't depreciate much more, and mine is probably hitting that now.
Decisions, decisions ...
As a newbie to the K1400GTR, I was unaware of its existence a month ago  :embarrassed: :asshole:,
I was interested to hear, on this forum, that the body shape of later models is less attractive than their predecessors'.
I will have to see them side by side to understand but in the meantime, I would appreciate any comments on this.
Thanks

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that, but I find the 2010 onward models more attractive.
That metallic brown paint though (which did not stop me buying one, and admittedly has grown on me), I can see how that is an acquired taste :mfr_lol:
Martin
I ride mine. Don't look at it that often.
When I do, I like the look, but she's not the prettiest thing out there.
As for early/late I prefer the early, but not because of the looks.
Because the early ones don't have Linked-brakes :nono:
Yes, I know some people like them. Me, I hate them.
ABS is fine, TCS is fine, Linked Brakes are the spawn of SATAN!
It's a f*****g BIKE, not a car!! :biker3:

Interesting comment. This is the only bike I have ever owned with linked brakes, and after 23k miles, I can honestly say it has *never* performed differently to a bike without them. I have not noticed any issues, nor any benefits to them.
I never use the rear brake though (well, almost never, the odd slow speed manouvering on snow scenario).
Martin.
I had linked brakes on my Varadero and they worked great. Don't know if the Kawasaki tech is much different but its one of the things that attracts me to the new model.
99% of the time I'm on the front brake. I think I press the rear now and then to check it hasn't seized

Me too. I have been so impressed with TC and ABS, that I can honestly say I will not buy a bike without them again. In addition to that increased feeling of all-weather safety, my next race bike will have to have this kit too as it is worth seconds a lap to us amateurs.
Martin.
I've not noticed any difference between the zzr and the gtr when braking, the principle of link brakes sounds great in theory, but as yet, not really noticed any benefits to having a link brake system. suppose you may need to push the gtr to near it's limits to noticed a significant difference. then if it's needed or even wanted! would be a personal choice.
I rather like the linked brake system...sorry and all that .... I do find that changing the system for the 2 up setting makes for much better braking balance when one is fully loaded and trying to brake from speed.
It takes away that feeling that the backend is trying to overtake the front...like my tuono.. which enjoys 'backing it's self in' whenever it can... :helpsmilie:

When I did my, now infamous (and probably by now, tedious for yooos :embarrassed:) rental day, I had two concerns (totally ignoring the real potential problem :ME).
Firstly, fork dive because I had ridden the K12) for more than a decade and linked brakes, of which I had experience on a K13rs, about a year ago and did not especially like.
Well, neither proved an issue for me on the GTR; although I was in no position to evaluate the effect of fork dive on impact.

Talking of two up: How is the GTR with large rider and substantial co-pilot?
I refer not to HID, but a well built, 15 stone, non riding, mate who finds my K12 and the K13 very comfortable.
Thanks

Sounds like you've never been to the Alps.
Try going into a hairpin downhill with the rear brake and then try the same using just the front.

Colchester Kawasaki have a 2011 in black on the floor, £11600 or so to you sir!
I'm sure there's some haggle room there!
Cheers

Asif these guys are wortha try also, have several colour options according to their website, so haggle hard on the older bikes!
Bought my ZZR here and proved sound to deal with and bike was prepped well.
Remember any new model will attract a premium as well as the lack of 2% finance almost certainly.
I would invest an hour ringing MCO and a few other dealers to see what they can do.
Let us know how it goes.
Asif not sure if you tried these guys out? http://www.motorcyclesdirect.co.uk/kawasaki/gtr1400-2012 I've heard a few times theses give good deals even when trading a bike in
They now own Colchester Kawasaki as well, hence the good price mentioned earlier.
Left field option, how about a deal with matey who wants to swap his new 2012 green bike for a GSA. We all know he is miles out on price, he may be better off doing a deal with you and trading in yours, they are much more likely to give hom £5k for yours than anything like £10+ for his???

if I remember correctly and this is the same guy. it was the 2011 model. this guy wanted to swap due to injury he had at work for something with a wide handlebar reach :undecided: on that thou..! can't see him going the other way "age and model wise" unless he needs the cash, and if so he would I've stated "will swap ex-amount of cash my-way" surely...!!!
Tick, tock, times slipping you by if the finance deals end this weekend........
Wasn't thinking of taking that much out on finance to be honest.
Still in two minds. Will sleep on it
My left field option with the guy looking to swap his 2012 model would be as follows, but time is against you
You trade in your 1400 with his BMW dealer and you then buy his 14 from him, it will only work if he is ready and able to trade quickly given the timing on Kawasaki's finance deal if this does not work.
Realistically you're probably too tight for time.
Of course K will do some sort of finance package in the next few months, may even extend the current deal, who knows.

Another thought I had was keep the existing GTR and buy a second hand ZZR 1400
TBH, yesterday I was at my local dealer. Had they matched the offer from Kawa Rochdale I would have ordered.
Today I'm in a different mood.
the insurance for a second bikes works out so good, normally £40-£50 per additional bike,
so go for it with that 14
If you do go for a ZZR make sure you get the upgraded engine, so an 08 onwards, not a blue or grey early model, but silver or black or green. The bottom end is sorted on the later engines and definately worth having.
There have been some unbelievable deals floating about.
2 I've seen this week.
VFR 1200 Auto £7995 NEW ...FFS!!Dobles in Croydon
ZX10 2011 NEW £7995 :huh:Daytona in Ruislip
Go figure how the buyers from last year feel who paid anything like RRP!

Dobles in Croydon are up to some hinky shit with the VFR's....like advertising 2011 models as 2012... there are no 2012 ones in the UK , they have sprayed up the 2011 models in 2012 colours, there is a big difference between the two.... the newer ones have traction control and a completly revised fuel mapping system to give better mpg... sumit a bit like our eco thingy that pops up on small fuel openings.
Old ZZR's good....... new ZZR's fookin dreadful... tis like riding a plank... a plank with no torque ... :hammer:

1. Buy a ZZR 1400 (and keep GTR)
2. Buy a 1000 SX  (and keep GTR)
3. Buy a old 636 for track days, with the remainder upgrade GTR to a second hand 2010 model

nothing can quite match the warm feeling that 2 bike ownership brings.

I came close to upgrading this week.
Saw a green '11 model, took it for a test ride and negotiated with salesman. Told him I would mull it over and decide.
Got back on my '08 model. As soon as I set off, world of difference, manly because of the time and effort in setting bike up. And the 08 engine is wonderfully run in, not tight like the '11 model
Which then got me thinking do I want to change? Uming and arring over the next few days, with LW telling me to just f****** do it!
Eventually decide that its probably worthwhile getting a newer bike just so I'm covered by warranty.
Call dealer and bike is already sold.
Came as a bit of relief actually. Now I really am in two minds if I want to upgrade.

I must say Kwikas that mr Wolf has got a point, I think it would be prudent to change sooner rather than later, as your bike will only cost more in repairs as the miles rack up. One option would be to wait until winter is back upon us, at which time prices will drop. But I think prices are only cheaper if you are buying from a private seller. If you intend to part ex yours at a dealer I dont think the price drop will apply. Any way I am sure that you will make the right decision, that includes buying a green one ,and not one of those dragged through a muddy field brown ones. :whistling:

Pics please. You didn't trade in the GTR did you?
Please boys, don't rush me or make presumptions..............
I thought you'd bought the GS a few weeks ago when I dropped those bits over at your work.
Picked it up last Saturday.
Took it to the local(ish) BMW dealer for a quick check over on Friday................(done about 400 miles and hate the fookin thing)
What is the matter with it?
Absolutely nothing. The bike is fine, handles superbly, gives a great position of view, looks 'quirky' but that's the way of bike styling now (Mogsy?!!), and really is a fantastice thing.
However - it's not me and I hate it!
Soooooo, I test rode a GS Adventure...................
Surely not much difference between the GS and the GS Adventure model?
Have you swapped it for an Adventure?
The GSA was even more awful and not what I recalled from the last time I rode one - Adventure bikes are NOT for me!
Sooooooooooooooooo......................
So the BMW 1600 GT?
Yupp! Offered a 'too good to miss' deal on the GS and my GTR.
Excellent, you did say you loved that bike. Good for you,
Oh nice one Winny .. that IS good news .. I remember you saying how much you liked it ... I look forward to hearing your long term professional reports on it ... model ? New ? Colour ? I am smiling for you mate ... especially as June is fast approaching.
Cheers Rusty and LW!
I will be sorting the fine details tomorrow.
It will be a new one in Vermillion Red, all the toys, with top box - GT model, rather than GTL, a little bit 'sportier'.
Will miss my beautiful GTR, but I am sure the GT will fill that gap!
The giraffacycle is going tomorrow as deposit - good riddance although there is nothing fundamentally wrong with it, it's just not me!
Can I still come on here please?
LW will you still ride out with me?
Does anybody want any of the goodies off the GTR at a good price?
Congrats on the new ride Chris.
What accessories are you selling and how much?
Winston, yes we can still go for a ride as long as we stay away from Wolfies Corner!
So which bits are you selling then?

Cheers Rusty and LW!
I will be sorting the fine details tomorrow.
It will be a new one in Vermillion Red, all the toys, with top box - GT model, rather than GTL, a little bit 'sportier'.
Will miss my beautiful GTR, but I am sure the GT will fill that gap!
The giraffacycle is going tomorrow as deposit - good riddance although there is nothing fundamentally wrong with it, it's just not me!
Can I still come on here please?
LW will you still ride out with me?
Does anybody want any of the goodies off the GTR at a good price?
Bloody turncoat... traitor.......I'll never speak to you again.............. how could you...are ya fkn mad.......have ya lost yer marbles........... :mfr_lol:
Chris....I knew you'd hate the GS and the GSA for that matter, and I know you've harboured a desire for the 1600 for some time. I hope that you enjoy the bike...... and don't even think about not coming on here.
As for riding out with us GTR types...forget it...you've been Black balled and sent to Coventry :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
I'll ride out with you anytime
BTW pics of the new steed would be good
That Vermillion is so nice .. almost Burgundy with a bit of sparkle ... LOTS of photos Winny ... remember, we like photos !!! :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
I will keep coming here - just cos you are such a good bunch!
I've stripped off the GTR tonight.
For sale will be:-
Larger 'standard' screen (New? Offers - £££)
Alloy rear plate. Phils Farkels model style 'A' $134 in US. - £40.00
Hand deflectors, really effective. New were about £75 from France. - £30.00.
Kawasaki Gel Saddle. £400 new - £250.00.
SW Motech Kawasaki mounting ring (and spacer for pre 2010 models - bespoke made) £28.00 new. - £15.00
Beowulf 450mm black oval with carbon end. £240.00 new - £100.00
Don't know what P&P will be. If interested let me know and I will get a price for post.
Chris, the SW Motech mounting ring, is there any reason why that wont fit a 2010 + model?
If it does, I'll have it. Pretty please.
Should fit OK. The spacer was to clear the 'ash tray'.
Some bargains there.
If I had a top box I'd be going the rear plate
May also have a K top box too
I'll measure the depth of the 'ashtray' on the bike tomorrow.I'm not sure if the new style is deeper or slimmer than the pre 2010 model
