Hi,
my name's Bert and I live in Paisley. I'll be taking delivery of my new GTR 1400 on 2nd April.
Thought I'd check in here and say hello.
Anyone got any tips on running the beast in? I have a 4 day tour coming up towards the end of the month and I'd like to be all run in before it.
Cheers
Bert
Just take it easy, take it through the rev range, but don't thrash it, get your 600 in as quick as you can (I find booking the first service when collecting the bike puts the pressure on getting the mileage in!)
Oh. And ENJOY the beast!
Hi Bert and welcome to the forum.
As per what Winston says TBH. I would probably avoid labouring it on the motorway initially though. I think the recommendation is not to exceed 4000 rpm for the breaking period. That will get you up to 80 - 90 ish I reckon.
Eh up Bert, :185: along. Congratulations on the GTR purchase. Where are you planning on touring?
Welcome Berty .... Get those miles in and be prepared to have a sore face after a few days .... bought on by all that SMILING
Thanks for the welcome guys, and the advice.
I've only got a few days with the bike and then I'm off on holiday so I'll need to try and pile some miles in the first week.
I'm off on a tour of the Scottish highlands on the 20th so I'm keen to have her broken in and first service done before I go. Wouldn't want to be the back marker, 16 bikes coming over from Ireland and being the only Jock I can't let the side down :)
I have the perfect solution. Leave the bike with me whilst you're on holiday and it'll be guaranteed to be broken in :whistling:
Would you believe that you're not the first to suggest that?
:mfr_lol:
I did a tour of Scotland last year, Loch Lomond, Lock Ness, Glencoe, Fort William all around that particular area and then the west coast, Port Patrick, returning home via Kirkcudbright and back towards The Lakes. Brilliant short break which also lasted four days.
Here's a link to it should you wish to have a look. http://www.gtr1400.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,591.0.html (http://www.gtr1400.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,591.0.html)
Welcome, make the engine work, as already said DO NOT LABOUR on long stretches, try and get a good selection of different roads etc, and try and get ALL the lever positions to suit you while picking the bike up

Yes leave it with Kwikas but confiscate his low gel saddle and he won't be going anywhere :mfr_lol:
Also, there's an 09 in L'Ecosse you might be able to borrow......I have forgotten which thread
Mr Wolf ... I had forgotten how lovely those pictures were ... what a lovely place to go
A BIG welcome from the Lake District Bert, you will love your new GTR
The advice you have been given re running your bike in is as good as it gets, take it easy, and steadily build her up
Where in Ireland are the bikes coming from for your Tour...I have many friends in Northern Ireland and have visited there many many times
remember to post some pics when you return, as this is a friendly helpful forum with more than a few olde codgers who like piccies :mfr_lol:
I just had a look at Lonewolf's post from his trip. It looked fantastic and very well photographed and written up.
I can't promise anything as good but if the trusty iPhone does what it says on the tin then I'll have a few photos to post up.
Most of the bikes are coming over from Eire, mostly around Dublin and Kildare but there are a few coming up from Englandshire too.
I reckon about 18 in total, It should be a blast. I'm new to the group, only know a couple of the lads so I'm looking forward to it.
here's the route we're taking.
day one http://g.co/maps/y8eq9
day two http://g.co/maps/ztpb9
day three http://g.co/maps/4wyfu
Thanks Bert, I don't know many folk in Eire, but I bet your in for a good trip in great company.
The routes look superb...I love Pitlochry, and used to make sure I could stay there when I was travelling (Atholl Palace)...at company expense...of course
They look like a decent set of routes ... enjoy the ride and scenery ... and don't forget your camera !
He should be back by now, where the write up and photos?
Hi guys,
thought i'd give you a quick update on the tour of the highlands.
It was great........
Turned out a few cried off but there were 13 bikes in total, met up in Edinburgh on Friday and set off for the highlands. Weather on Friday was pretty poor so the afternoon ride was a bit soggy. Luckily though, that was the worst of the weather and the rest of the weekend was mostly excellent riding weather, just a few patchy showers and damp patches.
I will post up a link shortly to some of the photos we took if anyone's interested and I'll try and give a bit more detail on the ride but for now, suffice to say that the decision to buy a GTR was definitely a good one. Now have 1300 mies on the clock and feeling like I'm getting used to it. I did find initially that it's not as nimble in the twisties as the ST4 but the difference in comfort and power makes up for it. Just had to modify my riding style a bit.
Now thinking of doing some advanced rider training to try and make the most of it.
Thanks again to all for the advice.
Cheers
Bert
Looking forward to the pics
.
Bring on the pics ... and don't worry .. once you get really used to it you will find it's very nimble in the twisties !

Oh yes .... as my knee and toe sliders confirm, the GTR thinks it's a ZZR... just with a bigger fairing :gunsmilie:
Guys,
still haven't had time to sort through the pictures and choose the good ones but if anyone fancies a browse through them look here.

I definately recognised a few of the locations there. Looks like you had an enjoyable trip with all the gang.
looks like a dandy time was had by all  nice pics and scenery and a nice collection of various bikes  shame I missed out on that one  but there again, I was not invited  bet that halfords shop doesn't get much business in the middle of nowhere..!
Halfords got more visits than planned, the 750 supersport had a crankcase oil leak, repaired with liquid metal on day one and the blackbird had some emergency chain surgery on day 2. Apart from that there were no problems ( oops, forgot about the little spill for the guy on the k1200, managed to just run off the tarmac on the single track mountain pass, no injury tho, just a little scuffing)
Will be sure to invite you next time :)
Looks like you all had a brilliant trip ... perhaps next time you could take some more photos !! :mfr_lol:
