Title: genuine gel seat fitting info!
Post by: 2kwacks on March 24, 2012, 10:18:40 AM
there was a recent post concerning the kawasaki "bagster" low gel seat "unhooking" while riding, Mr keith!.. kindly told us the fix was to slightly bend the seat clasp which I've just done! will report if that has soughted the problem the next time I use the bike  after soughting the clasp problem out, I noticed the seat "appears" not to be stitting correctly on the base! never noticed this before, now this may be the way the seat is supposed to fit, because it seems secure enough. so just wondering if anyone elses has the kawasaki gel seat fitted and if so, dose it fit on the bike the same way has mine dose? I've took some pics so you can compare with your seat, it dose not seem to be resting/sitting close enough to the base as far as I'm concerned, due to the "gap" between the seat and the base when fitted on bike? also the middle 2 hooks that are on the underside of the seat that hook under a small cross member "opposite the rear brake reservoir" dose not seem to be hooking completley under. I can see this, if I look through the "gap" when the seat is fitted! I do I've a bagster tank cover fitted, and just in case it was restricting the forward movement to allow the middel hooks to seat correctly, I did remove the tank cover and try the seat without, but it made no difference.
the first pic of the rear of the seat showing the luggage weight rack, is this where your seat is postioned or should the seat drop down into the recess, which of course would allow the seat to move forward slightly "thus" possible allowing the 2 middle hooks to hooke right under the cross member?

second pic side on! as you can see there seem's to be quite a large gap between the seat and the base?
3rd pic other side as the same gap?

anyway help on this matter would be most welcome, don't want to be loosing my seat mid-corner :sweatdrop: so just checking if any others who have the kawasaki gel seat fitted dose it look the same on there bike

hi dave dont know if you got my last message i  think i may have ballsed up  i cant be sure if my seat was sitting like yours,it does look as if your seat needs to go further down but i cant be sure, once mine stopped unclicking i never bothered with it,it maybe ok ,but you could try pushing down ontop of your seat and if you think it is trying to go further down but the catch is restricting it from going any further i would try to adjust the catch ,not 100% but i think there is some adjustment on it soory i cant help anymore than that good luck keith

The two hooks should locate under the seat.  There shouldn't be a gap.(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r183/Hoody_photo/DSCF2572.jpg)

The rear part doesn't sit flush on mine either.

thanks for the reply  not sure about this! the seat won't push down anymore, appears to be no adjustment on the middle hooks on the seat which if adjustment is required, they don't need bending "forward or backwards" because the the hooks seem not to be quite long enough to hook under cross member. so in-effect if anything, the hooks are not long enough to hook under! this may be the way there designed to simple stop the seat from moving forward and pushing on the tank when riding? I've already bent the rear clasp slighty to see if it will keep it in the lock position. the only adjustment I could possible see working, would be to bend the rear clasp a bit more "thus" allowing the seat to move more forward, but first I need to know if the rear of the seat is in the correct position, as the first pic in my first post shows. where the rear of the seat is positioned it is lined up with the rear of the "weight label" for example, comparison purposes! but not sure if the seat should be more forward, which would possible allow the seat to drop down slightly at the rear, but there again not sure if there a recess  for the seat to drop into. but thanks for your help, I'm sure it won't be long before another member who still as the gell seat fitted will advise me on this! if there all the same, then I'm not botherd. but untill then, I don't know if it's designed that way. like I said it's seems secure enough  but really need to compare it with another one.

thanks for the pics and info Mr smith  by looking at yours mine needs to move forward slightly, to allow the seat to drop down a bit more! my seat appears to be to far back. the rear of my seat is in line with the weight lable, yours seem to be more forward.  the only way I can see that working is to bend the rear lug/catch further backwards towards the rear of the seat, which should allow the seat to move forward that bit more and the middle hooks should then clip under the cross member. dose sound that right? don't want to bend the lug'catch then find I can't get the seat off :sweatdrop:

after looking at the pics you posted of the seat "Mr smith" it was obvious my seat was not sitting right on the base! so I've bent the rear lug/clasp slightly to allow the seat to be pushed further forward, as I mentioned the middle "hooks" where not "hooking" right under the cross member! since bending the lug/clasp it now as allowed the seat to move forward slightly and the middle securing hooks are now locating under the cross member, it still dose not look as forward as your seat, "in relation to the weight lable" when compaired on your pic and mine! you can see by the pic and the position of the back of the seat in relation to the "weight lable" on the before and after pics below! also a pic of seat side on, shows the gap is quite not as big. but enough to allow the seat to go further down and allow the middle securing hooks to locate correctly under the cross member, it's still requires a fair amount of pressure to push the seat down to loate the middle hooks, but I'm hoping with use this will "bed in" after a while. thanks for your help in this matter.

2kwacks, I still think your seat should sit lower and that there shouldn't be such a large gap running along its length.

As for Winston, I've personally witnessed his seat fitting techniques, I'm not suprised his sits lower, he packs a mean punch!!  :whistling:

I do recall having to 're-adjust' mine with the help of a pair of pliars near Whitby.............

Mr wolf! I tend to agree with you, but this seat will not sit any lower. there is 6 rubber stops, 2 at extreame rear, the other 4 rubber stops are positioned evenly the lenght of the underneath seat! I thought theses may be stopping the seat from sitting lower, so I've removed them, there's only a 2 mm difference when theses are removed, but when you weight is on the bike it sits lower, which due to me being a short arse, this will come in handy  will most likely leave the rubber stops off  "pics for comparsion" thank god for digi camaras.. "hey!!!
1st pic with rubber stops on!
2nd pic with rubber stops removed!
and by the 3rd pic of the rear of the seat, you can clearly see the seat as gone forward as much it possible can!
I've now come to the conclusion, that this is possible the way it's supposed to look, the gap between the plastic fairing and the bottom of the seat when fitted is 5 mm, this drops down to approx 3 mm when weight is applied. if it was any lower it would rub away the paint on the panel. so suppose this is the way it was intended.. I think...!!
