Title: Getting to grips, one week on.
Post by: Lonewolf on March 23, 2012, 06:56:45 PM
Getting to grips....

Well since I collected the new bike last Saturday I've done a grand total  of 0 miles on it.  :mfr_lol:

Today however, whilst I still haven't been out on it I've had an opportunity to change the screen back to the one I took off the 07 plate bike. A, C Baileys slightly taller screen.

I went through some of the controls on the display and noticed that it was set up for US gallons not UK gallons so thats been changed. Everything else looked ok.

I tried to wire up the Zumo but noticed that the front accessory leads are already occupied, after a quick investigation it seems the previous owner has installed a powered socket to the front left of the bike, the front right socket is obviously there as standard. This left socket has a smaller internal diameter than the left one so I'm unsure what he had plugged in there. Rather than ripping that out however I will try and put a splitter in and have both items wired in to the front connectors. Anybody got any recomendations on how or what to use to achieve this?

I'm unsure if I'm going to re-install the autocom, so that might be up for grabs soon as will the Kenwood PR radio and associated cables.

All in all though I'm very happy with the bike as it stands. Only negative aspect so far is that it doesn't have PR3's on, so that might have to be something I look at in due course.

Sounds like the previous owner may have been a BMW man, my GS has the smaller diameter sockets as standard. There are adaptors available to convert them up to car cigarette lighter size if you want them. Try Nippy Normans, Touratech or Sherlocks. You will find a plethora of socket/adaptors on those sites so I'm sure one will be found to meet your needs.

exactly what I was thinking.. the plugs required for such sockets are these

and the converter is this

Thanks for the above info, ideally though I want to avoid using the front left cig lighter adapter and stick with the concealed accessory leads so that I can perform a permanant hard wire. What sort of connector can I use there to accomodate both sets of cables?

Has he wired with bullet connectors? If so, just create two new bullets that split into two (i.e a Y shape). Then use one for the existing connection to the socket, and the other for the sat nav

Edit: or one of these

I didnt know you could get double bullet connectors, hopefully Maplins will sell them, I'll pop down tomorrow. That seems like the easiest option.

Jenros, yep, got a 2011 one last week, work has stopped play though so far.

I popped down to Maplins this morning and they didn't sell dual bullet connectors. They had dual spade connectors but I didn't want to waste unnecessary time and effort changing the connectors. So I cut the original wires off the back of the left side after market adapter and now I have the Zumo hard wired in to the front accessory power leads. Works a treat.

Yeah, I'll never use the cig sockets and I definately don't have any accessories with a plug diameter of that size.......so yes, I butchered it.

A man after my own heart.. :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:

Actually I also prefer not to use the ciggy socket, although it did work perfectly well providing power for the Sat Nav on a previous GTR, but on this one I've commandeered the Accessory cables at the front left of the bike which I have to say were annoyingly short, causing me a bit of a struggle to get enough out of the rubber shroud

Bloody irritating Mr kawasaki, I mean an extra couple of inches wouldn't hurt would it

(Form an orderly queue with your puns)

Ok, here goes. Today was the first time I had taken the beast out since collecting it last Saturday. Having put it in eco mode I was pleasantly suprised to see the MPG increase to a very impressive......

Now that was only after seventeen miles, so perhaps it wasn't as representative as you'd prefer so I carried on. After almost thirty four miles I was achieving just over 60mpg.....

On I went, completing nearly ninety miles and returned a quite healthy 59mpg which involved a mixture of motorways, A roads and small villages.

I love the bike, its better than I expected and the excellent MPG is just an added extra.  :mfr_lol:

I would've accused LW of photoshop abuse had it not been for the fact I saw the 57.1 mpg with my own eyes.

Surely it's dangerous travelling at 27mph on a motorway Steve?
