As anyone worked out how much saving there is when using the eco mode? I confess I've not used it much :embarrassed: not that I can't be botherd, more like I forget I've got it..lol. anyway! rememberd I had it the other day, so thought I would give it a try  at a steady 4,000 revs in O/D on the straite, and a fine day! it seemed to be averaging between 59 to 62 m.p.g would you say this was about right, just courious if this reading is accurate.
Hi,
10-15% at 4000rpm in OD/6th is about 85-90mph and does 51-52mpg. Go over 90 and the MPG starts dropping slowly.
Go faster than that and the 4500rpm - VVT cuts in and she likes to drink..... Don't expect to get more than 40-43mpg.
That's with the ECO mode on, if you don't, she will drink more and you most probably won't get above 150miles out of the tank.
Just my opinion...
Neil
Ps. As I said before, 250+ miles out of the tank is possible, but you'll be on fumes.
I have never had the eco off since i have had the bike for 2 months now, at the moment i am achieving 49mpg.
Commuting to London - 55mile with 17mile of filtering (M25 inwards), and the same on he way out, over 2weeks without resetting - I'm on 51.6mpg, that's a top speed of about 70mph +10% +2 ish.. ;-) where possible.
Best I've had out of the bike....... Due to local mileage to work previously.
Needless to say - I'm over the moon about it. :-)
Neil
What's ECO mode? :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
One thing I have done which you guys may or may not know....
I was adjusting the clock and went into the settings menu and realised that the fuel consumption/average was set to US gallons. When I reset it to UK metrics, i seem to be getting a lot more MPG and it takes longer for the fuel low warning to start flashing!!! lol

4,000 revs in O/D or if you prefer 6th gear  is a "indicated" 86 m.p.h. on the clock! or so I,ve heard "officer" to be honest I've not botherd checking the m.p.g! if it needs fuel I just fill the sod up. seeing that's the only alternative to pushing the heavy sod around  but your estimate seems spot on  I seem to get approx 175 miles on a full tank before the anoying "LOW FUEL" warning starts doing my swede in
With the exception of short local journeys I always ran our later GTR in ECO mode. As you may have seen in another post the range increased by about 10%. I've no idea what the MPG was.
Kevin
I've yet to test my new one but on the old one I could easily get 56-58mpg consistently.

You obviously haven't ridden with LW. I'm surprised he ever has to fill up! :mfr_lol:
mecki, what I meant was that when I went out for a jaunt on the steed and I zeroed the average mpg readout, at the conclusion of my ride, invariably it would show an average mpg of 56-58. I wouldn't necessarily empty a tank on each ride and you have to understand that its an average mpg, not a constant mpg, if that makes sense?
This was at the end of a 500 mile trip.

Me too, unless you are riding like a loon eco mode is perfect. Mine has averaged 52.4 since new (6500) miles, and I never think it needs to be in normal mode, but I do only ride on A and B roads and never go near motorways
With my new 2012, still under 400 miles on it. I got it on the 16th. I had a 2008 before and I can tell you I appreciate the ECO mode. My numbers with the eco mode are at least 15% better than on my 2008. Converting my leters per 100 km to our old miles per imperial gallon way of calculating, I now get 51.4 miles per gallon on my first W/E trip (5.5 liters per 100 km) and it's not even broken in! I used to get 44.1 miles to the imperial gallon (6.4 liters/100 km). That's a 14% economy compared to my 2008. If I did take care I'm sure I can improve even more. Haven't had figures like these since I had this specially slow speed trip with my old 1996 Honda ST1100.
I'm impressed with the ECO mode...and all!
I'm doing 6,4 liter per 100 km in city traffic to and from work with endless redlight starts every 500m. I always use Eco mode. 6,4 is about 43mpg according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_economy_in_automobiles.
Is that about what you guys have?
i dont really use eco mode that much, but when we did our big euro tour this year (3k miles) i did use if for all the long hauls and tried to gauge what my saving was , it certainly wasnt 10% , something between 5 and 8% id say , in other words just a few mpg improvemnt , nothing outstanding really
Hmmmmmm.
I used to average 42-43mpg on my commute to London on a 2009. Now 53-54mpg on 2010 wih eco.
perhaps I just gel with my bike... :-). Butnthats what it sys on he tin - nearly 25%.

Eco mode is a switchable fuel map on 2010+ GTR's. Kawasaki have leaned of the fuel consumption to give better fuel economy in Eco Mode.
This works very well between 70-90mph on long trips (50mile+ constant speed roads). Over 4500rpm, this makes very little difference if nothing at all (this is where the VVT cuts in).
This also doesn't work very well, or very little around town at there is lots of acceleration and braking. Also at slower speeds and on/off throttle conditions, with the lean mixture, I think the ECU starts to compensate for the lean mixture and can be a little jerky (ie when touching idle, even if momentarily).
Hope thats not too technical.
Neil
Well I've only done around 500 miles in the last month, but have averaged 50 mpg on one trip and 45mpg on another, both being around 180 miles. I've had the eco on and off on both trips but have decided not to bother with it unless say on a motorway.
Both trips were "spirited riding" :innocent:, so I can't complainn at those figures.
My Blackbird , which felt alot faster, returned 40mpg; it never needed flogging as it was so blistering fast
I just switch the ECO mode on very time I climb aboard the bike, as I don't see the point of running without it TBH.

So this eco mode can be either switch on or off from the menu? :biker3:
Its switchable on the bikes controls, and displays on the dashboard

So this eco mode can be either switch on or off from the menu? :biker3:
Yep, just hold the menu switch button down for a second or so and it will switch on/off.
There is an icon on the display screen showing when it is on.
Eco mode is always off when you start the bike so you have to turn it on every time you take off; and it only works with the throttle less then 1/3 open and below 100mph. So if you are riding 'sporty' it doesn't make much difference if it's on or off. But if you ride smooth like a tourer should be ridden the fuel saving is definitely notable.
Mecki, I'm not sure thats strickly true.
When your riding economically as you describle late, model kawasaki's - 2010 GTR, ZX10R, versys 1000 have an icon come up when your riding economically.
In addition to this, GTR's have a ECO mode that leans the fuel off to give 25% extra fuel consuption (ish). And thats the one were talking about, I guess.
Riding economically - you will get both to display.

Yes, the GTR also shows you when you're riding economically (3 rings), but when you switch eco mode on another icon (ECO) appears on the display.
But I may be mistaken with the 1/3 throttle and 100mph part.
The manual says that you can only switch to eco mode when the engine is below 6000 rpm, the throttle is less than 30% open and you are going slower than 152 mph.
The last condition of course must be a joke since you won't get to that kind of speed with less than 6000 rpm and the throttle only 30% open.
The manual also states that you loose horsepower when you switch eco mode on.
May well be, but I haven't notice a difference.
Are you reading the correct figures. 30% throttle and 100mph = 30% throttle and 160kph, but if your not english - I guess that could means 152kph... :-p

My manual on page 48 definitely says 250 km/h (152 mph)
Thanks guys. Will try the switching on and off part. But I do notice the icon appearing at certain constant speed. Guess that is when the ECO mode is off? As what Mecki had mentioned, if it is on, the icon should always be there? :sweatdrop:

They are two totally different icons. When you switch eco mode on the ECO icon stays there until you switch it off. It just lets you know that your ECU is now running on the leaner fuel mode. The function of the other icon (3 rings) is independent from this. So you will have both icons showing when you ride economically and have eco mode on.
just reading these figures and ive owned my bike a few weeks now and still coming to terms with various modes etc.
when I bought it, it had an average of 35mpg on the dash and since then that's about what ive been able to get out of it.
I try and have the throttle as closed as possible so the eco sign comes on but it still sucks re mpg.
my 600 Kawasaki can get 50mpg if I go for it.
is there probably something wrong with it?
someone has fitted an aftermarket end can- blue flame or summat. could that be affecting things?
Unless you are ragging it to death, 35mpg is rubbish. You should expect to get in the 45-50 range

The GTR actually has 6 gears and the engine won't stall even if you get below 2000 rpm, you know?
So gears 4, 5 and 6 can actually be used below 100mph without danger that you stall the engine.
You rev her over 6000 rpm and the big girl gets quite thirsty!
Just leave the display on Current and you will soon see what I am talking about.
:hammer:
What mileage are you doing? My GTR will only be 35mpg on my 2 mile commute to work....
Reset the clock, make sure the mpg is showing on the display, then press and hold the top button on the dash....
While your there, turn the ignition on, then hold both buttons down for 3-5 seconds, look at mpg and make sure it says Uk Mpg.
Do a 20 mile run, and as long as its not a thrash you should be ok.
Neil
Late to this thread but +1 for Zedman at the start ... Always in Eco mode and get 49 mpg ... It went up slightly after my recent long trip with Steve ! :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
To cut a long story short, I recently did 186km in on hour to a B & B, which included a toll and 30 miles off motorway, needless to say the MWay was 75 miles ish and completed in around 35 mins fully loaded :whistling:
Current reading on MWay was 30 - 32 but not in eco - as I forgot to put it on due to high level concentration, but average after 480 mile ( as it was reset at the start ) came in at 42, which I think is quite good, given the riding that it was given.
Coming home eco was used and took the average upto 56, from start to finish, but power and response is affected, but only slightly. Sat on a motorway in ECO at 90mph recorded current 62 mpg
I get nothing like those figures
with the mode trigger held for 3 seconds to get the 3 rings up and part throttle to get eco green running I still get high thirties at best.
as I say the average was mid thirties when I took ownership
maybe that's why he sold it?
I look at the instantaneous. I will reset the average and do the clock which ive been meaning to do for a month now.
on Saturday my zx6r got 45mpg at high speeds.
The best kept secret in my view is the GTR's great fuel efficiency (when in Eco mode). Just for fun I occasionally opt out and ride it properly. I still get low 40's and I'm not slow.
Sorry to say this but at those figures there's a problem.
yeah I think so
could the aftermarkey end can be causing me probs?
VERY unlikely that the end can will be the cause of this.

I've an '08 model too and with a good cross section of riding, I too am averaging 49mpg.
so if I go at a steady 80 I should get something like 50 mpg?
gonna have a go in an hour or so when its cooled down a bit.
also gonna try and fathom out if I am on pesetas or drachmas/ dollars instead of imperial gbp etc
I would guess instantaneous would indicate if you have a problem with the bike, if watched at a steady throttle/speed.
Average mpg is just that. If the reading is low to start with, no real amount of easier riding will raise the figure unless quite a high mileage is covered.
Resetting the average mpg will help you get a reading indicative of your bike/your riding style.
it was set to usa mpg and when I set it to uk it then read average 38.5mpg.
I reset it to zero but didn't get out as it was too hot.
in usa gallon mode I did notice at 120 I couldn't get it over 30 mpg even in eco mode and at 95 it was still mid thirties.
ive had instantaneous on the dash in my cars for years now and know you can cheat but this wasn't very impressive, another 10% or so might just make it bearable.
but I cant see it getting 50 plus like some get.
AJ, I think it could possibly be the way you are riding it. At 120 you are not going to be getting 55+ mpg! :mfr_lol:

It is not the speed that counts.
In overdrive mine doesn't start to get thirsty until about 110 but not before.
At 95 mph you should rev just over 4000 rpm and get mid 40s without ECO and high 40s or low 50s with ECO turned on.
Your numbers sound more like you're using 3rd gear and rev her like you need to on your little screamer so you don't stall the engine.
  :sleep1:
at 80 I get over 50
at 90 its 45 and 100 its 40 I think. gawd my memory is getting really bad!!!
but that's whilst cruising in eco mode and on a determined economy run mindset.
if I ride the bike using the throttle a bit and revving it to 5/6k hitting not much over 110 it returns mid thirties.
riding my zx6r miles harder, full throttle everywhere up to 140 i get 40 mpg. and much more if I try.
so my conclusion is its not very frugal on juice and has disappointed me.
if I ride the bike with minimal throttle low revs slow accel and no braking then I can get something like.
but I didn't buy a 1400 to ride it like a moped.
- do note that MPG for the USA and for the rest of the world is very different.

you have two very different bikes there , one is 300kg the other not a lot if the gtr was 100kg less it would do a lot more on fuel , but then you would not have the poise and ride of a touring bike , if you was riding behind a gtr on the 600 where the gtr will glide by artics on the 5th gear overtakes the 600 will be down 2 gears just to keep up . 50mpg two up with luggage in comfort is very good , try that on a 600,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Marketing gimmick? I've often wondered about the Eco mode during my little bimbles around, sometimes I forget to select it and other times I do and watch the 'current mpg' with interest. I never really see much difference. Yesterday I had a ride down to Aylesbury, about a 200 mile journey for me. On the way down, I set the Eco mode on and on the way home it was off. Exactly the same route and of course the traffic wasn't exactly the same but it took me pretty much the same time, 2hrs 50. On both legs, I averaged 43 mpg and can't see a difference in the amount of fuel I had to put in to top up. If there was a difference it was negligible!

all i'm saying is the gtr isn't very good on fuel unless you ride it like a miser or in a way that takes away a lot of the fun of riding the bike.
of course I understand they are two different bikes. how dopey do you think I am? and do you think you really have to point out the differences in power delivery ie overtaking?
i could never ever get 50mpg out of the gtr unless i adjusted the throttle cable or summat.
i have no doubt people can get excellent economy, i have seen it on my dash for myself in stints, but as soon as you touch that throttle mpg is down in the thirties. i like to ride on country roads with bends etc yesterday did 200 miles over the moors and didn't go near even a dual carriageway.
and the mpg was poor.
