Title: Range and Fuel Consumption
Post by: Kevin on March 19, 2012, 03:52:26 PM
Someone on the FJR forum was just expressing surprise that I was getting better range from the GTR with its 22l tank than from the FJR which has a 25l tank. We were seeing ~200 out of a tank on the early GTR, 220+ on the later GTR in ECO mode and 170 on the FJR (until I put a bigger tank on it). These figures are based on two-up riding plus full panniers and top box.

I haven't got a clue what our MPG was as it's not a figure I'm focussed on (and I can't check as our GTR was sold a week or so ago) but now I'm curious. What range/MPG are you seeing out of your Gen 1/2 GTRs?

Thanks.

Kevin

Gen 1 or 2? If gen 2, with or without ECO mode? Solo or baggage and luggage? (I don't want much do I?!  )

Well, I get between 180 and 260 miles out of a tank on my 2011. That's solo and the best I had was fully loaded in Eco mode riding at 90-100 km/h in overdrive on nearly empty national roads in France. The worst I get in winter when I use the bike mainly for shopping.
On average the computer tells me I've managed 44 mpg. Which doesn't mean anything to me, but I'd say I get just over 10 miles per litre or just over 6l for 100km. And that is pretty good.

My 2010 has averaged 52mpg (measured by the bike) in the 23k since new, and I would say no more than 30% of those miles have been with ECO mode on. I always do between 200 and 220 before needing to fill up, and normally it takes 20l at this point.

I am stunned by the fuel economy of this bike.

Martin.

Gen1, at 48,600 miles. I averaged 44Mpg over the last 2000 miles according to the computer.
Calculated MPG is usually about 1Mpg worse (so 43Mpg).

As for Range, are we talking to Reserve or until you have to push it?  :whistling:

My worst was 161 before being hassled with the "LOW FUEL" warning.
My best was 210 to "LOW FUEL".
Both times I filled up within a couple of miles and it took almost exactly 18 litres.
So worst was 41Mpg  and best was nearly 53Mpg.
Not bad for a 1400cc 300kg 160Mph beastie.  :punk:

That's a fair question. I was usually 10-20 miles into the really-annoying-flashing-message before I felt I had to fill up so range to the message was probably 180-190 on the gen 1 and 200-210 on the gen 2 in ECO mode.

Mine's got a PC V and flies out. Side panniers normally loaded. Only myself on the bike.

These are motorway figures.

If I sit on the motorway at 90is I get about 180 miles to the tank
At 70ish I get 220ish

Average MPG over the last 20k has been 37 mpg. I did get 55mpg once, but it was too boring

I usually averaged 45 mpg on a 600 hornet and then the same on a cbf1000.

I now get near enough 45mpg on the GTR so have no grumbles

I've seen 220 miles on a full tank in Austria fully loaded, and I've managed 180ish unloaded but riding..... shall we say.... a bit harder than normal

I reckon the ECO mode will make a difference when touring

As posted someplace else on ere i can easily get 217 on a regular run to somerset to see my misses from where i work in Blackburn with enough left over to limp to local station so i guess thats about 223ish no problem , however this last wk end i got down to last bar and only got 137mile cant say how long it had been on the last bar or when it would start flashin as filled it up., but i can say i was "enjoying myself" prior to this.   :punk:
i also had 2 FJRs and could get 200mile from a tank on both of them , some guys from the fj club recon they could get alot more than that !

That's quite interesting. Given that pretty much all of my riding is with baggage and luggage it seems we're getting comparable mileage to the rest of you (not so  tyres of course  ) but I seem to be getting much fewer miles from the FJR than people on the FJOC forum are. I wonder why.

(well I thought it was interesting anyway!)

Can people who aren't forum members see the content of a thread Kwik? A couple of people over on the FJOC forum have asked about GTR fuel consumption and I pointed then at this thread. If they can't see it I'll type some of the data on the other forum.

I was one of the FJR guys asking...   Not really any reason other than curiosity, but the bike does seem a possible option one day...  perhaps

On the FJR, people seem to get between about low 40s and high 40s, although some do get low 50's when touring, and with a "25 litres, all available" tank that gives a range of between about 225 and 265 miles to pushing it, although most fill at 200 or soon after.

On my last, 2007 model which got totalled (with nearly me too - serious accident  ) it regularly was in the mid 40s to low/mid 50s and that was with a (modified) PC111 USB. Some model years were a bit snatchy on the pickup and a PC111 sorted it, as well as releasing a touch more go..  ( 129 / 99 on the dyno)

Confirm what Mecki said - I could read but not post...

If I had a 25l tank I'd be aiming at the 300 miles mark on one tank!
And I'm sure this would be achievable with the GTR if you don't go over 90 mph, stay in OD and keep away from cities.
My Low Fuel warning usually starts at 190-195 and I know I've still got at least 40-50 miles left.
And I don't put the bike on the centre stand when I fill up.

I have managed to get 240 miles out of my tank when travelling up to Leeds from London.  I keep it below 4k for most of the trip.

Funny though, on the way back it doesn't make it all the way home on one tank! lol  And it's all downhill!

About 47 MPG over 190 miles on trip to lakes at weekend trying to stay in high gear in eco mode and double figure speeds keeping up with 600cc sports bike leader

There are so many factors coming into play that is hard to compare. But on a 2000 kms trip with a mix of highway, mountains, i averaged 5.7 liters to the 100 km, which is fairly good on a bike this size. I have a PCV,  flies out, but a double exhaust Muzzy which would dramatically increase the mpg without a well tuned bike.

Yeah, to be honest, there's still plenty of power there for me even in Eco mode.

LW, there's probably plenty of power for you in a 50cc moped.

No, wait. Apologies to the moped. Maybe a lawnmower engine? I  :mfr_lol:

Just to balance things out

(28500 needs to be added to mileage as unit replaced under warranty)
