Title: Where only the coffee can filter
Post by: Nok12rs on March 18, 2012, 08:19:29 PM
I am so glad that I was ignorant of the German law which prohibits motorcycle filtering, when I rode to Hanover last year.

Fortunately, my aforementioned ignorance was not commented upon by the Polizei or any motorists.

Furthermore, I did not notice any bikers sitting in line, though in fairness, I did not see many bikers, it being pre season.

So, ignorance was bliss but might not have been an excuse under Das Gesetz.  And, for sure not in Belgium:

I was aware, fortunately, that the Belgian Gendies can confiscate the machine of he who speeds!  Well, that's what I was told and I was not going for the benefit of the doubt  (having lived there for a few years in the 70's) :nono:

Popped in to Wilbers on the way back where I had booked her in for new shocks front and rear. ("Why not on the motorcycle as well"  I hear you cry.   :cheesy:

Note:  This post was prompted by the (2011)  post concerning (planned) European Legislation and opposition to it  which I have just read.

Now who was that Tyneside Kiwi raising British sensitivities?  It is so interesting that we English can even be bigoted (small b) towards folk in the next village but quickly unite in the face of colonial critics.

As a young man I spent several wonderful years in Australia.  Their definition of a Kiwi was.....nah!   :listencarefully:   Perhaps not on this properly moderated forum.

Don't get me started what the Kiwis think of the Aussies or the Poms.  :ohplease:

if that's all you could find of any interest in my post  then :oops:I guess I already have - got you started, that is  :surrender:

"Filtering" is illegal in most countries.  :nono:
It may be tolerated by some cops if traffic is stationary and you move slowly but I wouldn't count on it.
After all it's either "undertaking", wrong overtaking or even regarded as reckless or dangerous riding.
In most cases especially with a UK plate you may get off with a warning but using the "third lane" can cost you not only in Germany.
Even in the UK you may get prosecuted if the fuzz feel like it.
Wales comes to mind.
So yes, except for slandering "that Tyneside Kiwi" there isn't anything interesting in your post.

Thank you for that Mr Mecki.   Oh, and call me pedantic, but I think the word is libel !:surrender:

Now perhaps I can attempt to be less boring by asking for your assistance :ohplease::  Do all 2009 bikes have abs?

Why do I ask?  I registered here last week and explained that I would be having my first 14GTR ride this Wednesday.  The boss of the bike hire firm felt sure that the bike was a 2010 but check today to be sure.  This I did by speaking with his wife just now and was informed that the bike is a 2009 and she did not know about ABS.

As the purpose of this 24hr hire is a test ride (without involving dealers at this stage) and the purchase goal (if I love it like you all do) lies somewhere between a late'10 and an early (aren't they all just now) 12, is there any point in riding a 2009 bike?

All UK models are with ABS

I would still ride the 2009. From speaking to LW, the ride on the 2010 and later models is more refined.

I've filtered in Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Greece, and the USA (Virginia, Washington DC, and California). Apparently it's tolerated in California but illegal in all the rest.

Like most things, if done sensibly most plod are not going to nick you.
Ride like a twat and you are going to get busted, bagged, and binned.  :death:

Belgium doesn't have any Gendarmes any more. They were disbanded after the DuTroux scandal.
Several senior Gendarmes were implicated and there were several "disappearances" and suicides.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgian_Gendarmerie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgian_Gendarmerie)
What they have now is Local and Federal Police.

As for the racist comments,.... I'm not racist. I hate all of you equally!  :taz:

Hi Mr Kwik, I have just been down to "about town bike hire" and checked her out: ABS, as you advised and rather nice to sit on!!!

I could see straight away that the screen is a bit inadequate for my bulk/height but then so was mine ..........legs felt fine, slight sliding forward felling but the wind will push me back

Roll on Wednesday!

Now then, a route needs planning to get the best out of the day.   I am thinking A3 to Guilford and then back roads to Chichester then Pagham where a great fish and chips  could be had.......things change of course......

Then a return on mixed A and Bs.

Of course, with a full 24hours at my disposal, I could try for an epic!!!!!

Well I've so far only been stopped for filtering in New Zealand and Holland.
The Dutch plod just shook their heads and waved a finger at me.  :nono:
In those days they still had traffic cops in NZ driving those black and white patrol cars (see the thread about the attitude test and Aussi Highway patrol - which is about the same) and even though he couldn't get me to admit that I wasn't just changing lanes smartly in heavy crawling traffic (which obviously isn't illegal and the rule is never to admit you've knowingly done anything wrong, because if you do they do you for it) the b...d got me for a marginal  :whistling: tyre instead and I was late for work too.

Antipodean police!

Quite sight to see 6'6" x 20stone NSW Raging Bull in breeches and jack boots.  After inspecting my UK driving license (you get/got three months grace) he threw it with as much force as he could muster (not inconsiderable) in my face, turned purple and screamed "That's not a F...ing license that's f..king arse paper!

I took the eventually proffered multiple choice ticket and without looking at it, drove the180 ish miles home.   On arrival I checked the ticket and found that none of the boxes were checked

Never heard another word    Must have passed the attitude test..............

That pretty well sums up their attitude towards us.

A Police bike instructor once told a colleauge of mine on traffic, "If you aren't going to filter, whats the point of having a bike?"

Absolutely Mr Wolf.  Ban filtering and there would be hardly any point in taking a bike through a British city outside the period from 9 pm to 6 am.

At about half 6 after a 12 hour day shift you will find me filtering from Charring Cross down to the A3 (and on to Guildford) ... about 5/6 miles, which ever route I take, and there are many, it takes me 30 minutes ... a strong coffee before I go.... so I have the reactions of a cat .... and there will be plenty of slow speed agility with the fan cutting in soon after Eaton Square ! You have to filter ... there is no other way .... the only alternative would be to stay at work till about 10 ish when the traffic is a little lighter ! :mfr_lol:

Could not agree more Mr Rusty.  I commuted on my K1200RS from SW18 to Docklands and Euston Road, every day in all weather from 1999 to 2007.

I had never had a motorcyle accident..................

Hers's the thing: Yesterday, my first 1400GTR ride on hired '09 from Wandsworth to...............Chichester (or not!)

1. Wandsworth to A3  I like this  bike

2. A3 to Guildford  I love this bike

3. Guildford towards Chichester, I am absolutely in love! (OK a couple of niggles but who or what is perferct.)

4. 1300 hours, South of Petworth, (A285) speed down to 30ish, head on collision with smallish car   :embarrassed: .

Totalled bike and probably the car, apparently my fault.  Interestingly, car air bags did not deploy. Incredible V notch feature in their bonnet from impact.

Para medic tailors did great job on my kit and on me (bless em all and sincere thanks)

Ambulance to Chichester Hospital (  as I said that was my destination -Chichester.)  Check over and Xrays. Nothing broken.  Severe legs and groin swelling plus twisted right knee.

Discharged to a taxi at 18:00.

A fine time to have my first ever accident. Thank God for small  car and not a truck,

Thank God for nicely collapsed 1400GTR.

Cost of Day out :  £155 hire £60 insurance.  my insurance excess £2,000 (not possible to pay for less) plus £150 for transporting bike to local garage plus £150 recovery to hire firm SW18 and £105 for taxi

I am both stirred and shaken but, for now, have license to live......for everything else there's Access.

I have so enjoyed this Forum. I hope I am not breaking written or unwritten protocol by proclaiming to all that I can be a pratt in action as well as in words.

It's kinda cathartic.

Be safe.

Dude, glad to hear you're OK. Vehicles, money etc can be replaced. You can't.

Was one of you in the wrong lane?

Glad to hear you're OK, as said above metal can be replaced as can the money, you can't.

Let's hope the swelling goes down and you're back to normal soon.

Best wishes for a swift recovery.

Made it......didn't mention the ABS once!!!

Messrs Kwikas and Nigelp,

Thank you both for you kind wishes.

A long answer to MrKwiks question:

A moments loss of concentration whilst doing 30 mph down hill approaching a sharp left hander. There is a road which joins the bend thereby giving, to some, the impression that you can go straight on.  Police say quite a few accidents at this point for these reasons.  Also some that go straight on without incident.

I, apparently, went straight on but not, I believe, because I thought  that the road did!

No, I believe that going slowly after a brilliant nippy ride I allowed myself to drift off on a metal review of the bike thus far.  Suddenly, I am awake and going straight for a car that is at the apex of the bend.  Grabbed everything and began a slow motion trip to the scene of the accident

I have just spoken with the police, because I did not see the final dispositions from the ground or the stretcher. They explained:

1. Car, with newly formed V notch feature, facing north in correct lane.
2. Me lying parallel with front bumper, head by near side front wheel.
3. Beautiful bike lying almost parallel with me and car, head level with mine.

Police believe that it was clearly my fault, they do not believe I was speeding and will close matter with a wrist slapping letter, mostly, he explained, to provide clarity for the insurance companies now, and mine in the future!!!!!!!!!!!!

And finally...... I powerfully recollect thinking, as I was being (it seemed) tossed slammed around   "Shit!  I am going to live!!"

So, enough dramatics from one S S B for today.

Be Safe be Vigilant .

What you described can happen easily. You can never be 100% vigilant. Key is to learn.
Here's to you healing quickly.

Sorry to hear about your accident. where only human so prone to make mistakes. bikes and cars are only metal and can be repaired or replaced. any accident we can walk away from is a good one, glad to hear you did

Well that's what you call putting the bike to a test....all that matters is that you are ok

Its a salutory lesson to us all .....being 100% alert 100% of the time , as it only takes a small lapse in concentration.

Thanks to all for comments and good wishes.

Time to hobble out with Lottie. She likes to play with balls and take a piss outdoors at this time of night.

And then to bed,

to sleep, per chance to dream............ of wraith like steed......in magnesium armour clad...bright lights where steaming nostrils flair......she flies .....from earthly cares immune...'till dawns' bright light to rest her brings.....and I awake......the spirits to thank (JD) and a future brighter yet to behold.

Holy shit, just caught up with this. Glad you are reasonably ok, it sounds like you'll heal up without lasting damage other than pride.

I have two questions for you.....

What did the dealer say?

Are you going to buy a GTR? You sounded hooked before the 'incident'.

So sorry to hear you came a cropper in my neck of the woods, or anywhere for that matter .... thank goodness you and the driver are ok.
As everyone else has said .. cars and bikes can be replaced but you can't so that's the way to look at it.
Sounds like you enjoyed the A285 ... Petworth, Midhurst and all that West Sussex area is just lovely... especially on days like this
Take care old fruit ... and don't let it put you off getting a Gtr !
