Title: Tom Tom GPS
Post by: O.C. on March 05, 2012, 03:18:14 PM
Having updated my Tom Tom Euro 2 GPS on line I struggled to remake a bluetooth audio connection with my Starcom Digital Comms device. I followed all the instructions and as I have completed the 'pairing' proceedure before couldn't understand why, after an hour, it simply would not pair up.

So I rang Starcom, and was informed that I was one of a number of customers with the same problem, which is as follows :-

If you update your Tom Tom device on line with new roads etc., then within that same proceedure TomTom also update your device software, which is fine, EXCEPT, the latest software is not compatible with the Bluetooth connection (dongle) on my bikes Starcom set up, and may not be with your also.

BUGGER.....thats a bit of a sod innit.........the very polite guy at Starcom informed me that the ONLY way to overcome this problem is to buy the latest Bluetooth dongle (BTM 02).....................Thank you sir, that'll be £79 +P&P, it will be with you tommorow.........GULP ..I had no choice but to use my flexible friend.

The point of this post is...if you have a Tom Tom GPS device and you update the map software then the chances are that you mey experience the same problem as I did.

Fore warned is fore armed they say !

Did you have the previous configuration of the Tom Tom backed up? You could have just re-instated the previous version.

I had something similiar with Tom Tom on a GO 720 some time ago.

i have always found the blue tooth conection worse than useless on my version 1 anyway , i would like to hear instructions but there no good if i passing the junction at the time or only getting half of the message cos it seems like it got a delay in coming through and thats if i can understand the garbled voice. i just put up with looking at screen ,not ideal but less annoying .  not even attempted updating ,that scary stuff for me lol

Steve (Lonewolf), What happened was that my original Tom Tom Rider 2, purchased about 3 yrs ago packed in, so I contacted TT and they very kindly sent me a brand new device about 2 months ago..what a result that was  The new Device is obviously of the latest configuration and until yesterday I hadn't tried to pair it with my Starcom. However in the meantime I received an e-mail from TT informing me that I could update my device with the latest Western Europe maps (on line), so I did this, and seemingly at this time it also updated the device software, hence the original BTM01 bluetooth (dongle) is no longer compatible.

Interestingly, I spoke to my mate in N.I last night who also uses TT but via Autocom, who apparently are now owned by Starcom, and he tells me that he is now reluctant to update his Device as he fears it will go the same way as mine. He has also looked on the Autocom site and has seen that Autocom now offer a BTM 02 (A) bluetooth connection dongle for their system, I guess the "a" letter is for Autocom.

I suspect that this update is due to improved technolodgy and the resulting improvements in Bluetooth capability.

Steve (Slane) I told you before that no matter how tight you stretch the string between the two empty bean cans, that it just wont work mate  :mfr_lol:...seriously give me a call and I'll see if we can sort it

I was looking at buying a Tomtom Rider but after looking around at various websites and not being able to make up my mind, I finally decided on the tom-tom europe app for my iPhone.
Still to try it in anger but the iPhone pairs up nicely on bluetooth with my ncomm b4 kit and although I won't be able to look at the screen on the phone while riding, I do get voice alerts .

Like I said, not tried it in anger yet but am fairly hopeful it will do the trick.

The app was fairly pricey at 79.99 bit still a hell of a lot less than a tom-tom rider.
Jst a bit miffed that my tom-tom one that I use in the car is not suitable for the bike too.

I have the Tom Tom Rider 2,Autocom Logic1 and a BM02 bluetoth dongle all new in Feb, works faultless, clear instruction in my helmet and got me around Europe last month faultlessly.

I placed the dongle under the black panel on the tank almost right underneath the Tom Tom.

Just my 2p worth.

Will Tom Tom pair with anything else? Have you tried deleting device profiles?

Andy...good point...Personally I haven't tried or needed to attempt to Pair Tom Tom with anything else, although I suspect it should be able to do so, if anyone else has experience of this then I'm sure its worth sharing

My Tom Tom is now working extremely well giving good clear instructions into my helmet speakers, which does the job for me

I initially bought a TomTom Rider because I was familiar witg the software and operating proceedures from a wagon I was driving at the time, and to be honest I can't say that I've found any real faults with the way that it operates..it gats a thumbs up from me.. great aftersales service too

In 2009 on the Santander ferry to Spain nine out of a group of twelve found we no longer had mobile phone connection - most important if we wanted to text 'STOP' to the leader for any reason - initially we thought the ship's radar had affected our TomToms - a call to TT customer services (joke) revealed most of us had recently updated our maps but also a software glitch - a soft reset with a paper clip (high tech) resolved the problem pending a 'patch' which we are still waiting for!!!!!   A recent software upgrade means I no longer need the paper clip but I have to use a 6 year old phone to receive and send calls and texts.  Totally pissed off, many changed to Garmin whose staff actually speak to you on the telephone and return your call to resolve your problem. Garmin technology is extremely versatile with route planning and music etcetera but not as user friendly as TomTom - word is that Garmin technology and user friendly TomTom would make the ideal unit !!!

I do not recognize the picture of the TomTom Rider. The first version, ie. Rider and Rider 2, had problems connecting to 12v charger because of the lock brace. This was corrected with TomTom Urban Rider which I've used for nearly three years. Urban Rider connects seamlessly to the Cardo, Sena and Interphone. I've used both Nokia, iPhone and HTC phones without problems.

And also you must remember that the price for TomTom Urban Rider is almost half the Garmin 660th I have the philosophy that I would rather give it half a GPS and then change it every third or fourth year. I can easily live with the cards as the Urban Rider (europe) is supplied with the standard when purchased - with the certainty that I get a new card when I buy a new GPS after three or four years. I typically sell my Urban Rider for half the purchase price - making Urban Rider much more economical than Garmin.

When it comes to features and operation of the Urban Rider, so I can only praise the Urban Rider for its convenience. Moreover, it recalculates routes faster than Garmin. It takes up less space on your motorcycle.

Just my 2 cents!

My garmin 660...is a fookin nightmare  :hammer: I'm on my 3rd one in a year... bloody things are so fragile when doing map and software up dates... also sometimes if you use a different map from the verison on the unit it just draws ba straight line between your waypoints..... and then there is Mapsource...  :ohplease:  god it's crap.... why cant they just use a drag and drop system like google maps...

I look at maps before I go, memorise some town names on my route, and navigate using road signs.
If necessary I will get the maps/satnav out if I get lost but once I have figured out where I am I put them away again.
That way I get to enjoy the ride and see stuff that few SatNav-ers ever see.
The last thing I want is some bit of electronics bleating away in my ears.
I ride the bike to get away from all that.

Eye Eye Captain....the precise argument can be used in the opposite direction

When using GPS, you can focus on the road, relax and enjoy the surroundings. You do not even look constantly on your GPS, as it tells you in good time when you should swing or change direction.

Using GPS can tell you how the road turns and make the trip more safe for you!

Welcome to 2012!

Oh George don't be such a Luddite   :mfr_lol:

I do take your point, but the Sat Nav is very handy when needed to find specific places

Oh BTW it also pre-warns me of Speed cameras
