Title: Garmin MP3 and i-tunes
Post by: nogoslow on February 27, 2012, 02:05:00 PM
I've been looking into buying a garmin Satnav and noticed that the Zumo 550 and 660 have MP3 built in. I like the idea of being able to listen to some music on long rides. Does anybody use this function with their satnav and if so how easy is it to put music on it? most of my music has been downloaded from i-tunes to my laptop.  I'd like to know before i shell out on one. Cheers.

This is what I discovered with mine, unless someone knows better in which case please speak now or forever hold your piece!

If anyone else has a Zumo 550 and they intend to put some music on it, it aint as straight forward as you might of hoped.
I have i-tunes as my default player on the PC and as I have discovered this evening i-tunes is not compatible with the Zumo. Therefore what you need to do is use Windows Media Player and alter the format to MP3 by going into the menu (RIP) and then selecting (MORE OPTIONS). From there change the format to MP3 and select best quality. This will use about 144mb per CD.
Then import, (rip) your tracks off the CD and create a Playlist from within Windows Media Player and give it a name which you can associate easily with the Zumo. Then connect your Zumo to your PC and sync the two together. Your MP3 music tracks will then be transferred to your Zumo. I purchased a seperate SD card for the Zumo, (8gb) and copied the music tracks straight to that. That way there is no risk of accidental deletion of any important files on the actual Zumo itself.
Pop your SD card back into the Zumo unless you have copied the files over with the SD card already in the Zumo, its as broad as it is long. And then you are in business. Simple!

:agree: As always Mr Wolf is correct ... Zumo 660 last year and I am very pleased with it ... you just have to convert everything to MP3 and sync it together ..... get some decent ear plugs made and you are away .....

Thanks for the speedy responses. That seems far too complicated and time consuming for a techno muppet like me. Not sure i have the skill or can be bothered copying everything to disc and back to the computer. think i'll get a waterproof mount for my i-phone and a lower spec garmin (probably the zumo 220).

What I have to admit to still not understanding though is that if you convert the music file/s to MP3 through Windows Media Player, doesn't I-Tunes use MP3 format for its music files and if so why wont that work?

Maybe I'm wrong...or just confused!!  Either way WM Player seems the soluution.

Thats exactly what I did and I love it - but I mostly listen to the radio rather than music

Just get rid of your Apple products. They are a pile of  :shit: anyway.

Apple are more of a fashion company than a technology company. As for iTunes - worst piece of bloatware ever.

Your absolutely right Mogster. Most of the time i prefer listening to/hearing what the bike is doing, however, I'm off to Germany soon for a week. One of the group has recently passed their test and rides a cb500. Can't see the GTR soundtrack getting turned up loud on that trip. plodding along listening to some music might make a nice change. Kawadolph, good link thanks, doesnt seem too difficult afterall.

18 months ago, I changed my Nokia N95 house brick which did everything perfectly for an iPhone 4...what a load of crap that was....the best thing about it was, I got £100 more for it when I sold it than it cost new

The iPhone has now gone and been replaced with a Nokia Lumia 800 its the dogs doo dahs

Steve, Its function system was, to me a ballache, and the fact that it struggled to get a signal where I live. I ended up buying an aluminium lined case which helped and installing a home signal booster..I do live in the 'sticks'

I NEVER had any problem with its Nokia predecessor, nor have I had any problem with its succesor the Nokia Lumia

I already have a Samsung Galaxy 2 so I would just need to get a waterproof holder.
It can do SatNav, MP3 player, phone, web-browser, TV player, games console, and at some point if I get REALLY bored I might even actually ride the bike.

SatNavs are dead.  :rip:
iPhone is a fashion accessory.
The future is Android!  :alien:  :punk:

It won't be long now before you can buy TomTom or Garmin to run on your Android device, if they have any sense (already available for JesusPhone users).

Apart from Google Navigation, there are already several very good SatNav Apps for the Droid mostly based on OpenMap.
NavFree is even free.

Droid, iOS, Symbian, Windows Mobile 7, they can all do it all.
Just Droid and iOS are best supported with Apps.

But only if you own a smart phone, pay a monthly contract and stay in the UK. :ohplease:
If you go to the mainland it will be quite expensive due to exorbitant roaming charges!    :hammer:
:listencarefully: I don't need a smart-phone, so why buy one and pay through the nose?

So instead are you going to buy a £500 satnav that does one thing only?
I have a cheap satnav (Garmin Nuvi 205) for the car and Google Navigator is better.
As for NavFree it downloads your maps before you go so no roaming charges.

I find when I go abroad I need the internet. So I normally buy a SIM particular to that country and off I go.
My sat nav is a cheapo 40 quidish unit I bought about 5 years ago. Does the job. I always have my mobile as a backup.

I see it the other way around.
:listencarefully: Why buy a sat nav with a tiny display that isn't waterproof and can't be operated with gloves on just because it can also be used as a phone?  :whistling:

TBH, when using my phone as sat nav, I have it in my pocket and listen to the audio.
