Title: GTR Puchase
Post by: BigAlan on November 15, 2010, 03:37:09 PM
I am considering purchasing a 1400GTR of June 2010 vintage, it has the fob and one key which fits in the bike between the handlebars, is that all you get? or is there supposed to be another key or fob just in case the fob breaks down?
regards
Alan

Yes, one fob and one key which should be in a holder. You can use the holder as a spare by holding it against the ignition. One of the members with a 2010 model should be able to confirm.

The older model came with two fobs

I wasn't aware of that. As you say my model, the older model came with two keys. On the newer models then, can you have a spare fob programed, just in case?

Yes, you can have a new fob programmed. I don't know how much its going to cost - fob + reprogramming. You might be better off getting a fob of eBay and getting it programmed.

Am i correct in thinking when buying new you get a large key which fits in the ignition, plus 2 x fobs, one slimline and one normal both of which have keys in? The one i am thinking of purchasing has only the slimline fob and that key is missing?

I dont want to buy the bike and find out the fob goes pop and i have to replace the ECU

Thanks
Alan

Alan,

My new 2010 model came with one fob, and one thin credit card type key. The fob contains a removable key blade for tank, panniers etc if needed. The credit card type key has some sort of very short range transponder for KiPass, i.e. it will start the bike if you lose the fob, but you have to mount it in a special slot on the headstock.

Long winded way of saying, yes, the 2010 only gets one fob. My dealer told me £250 to get a second fob supplied and programmed, and I'd just need to prove that the bike was mine (ID, V5 etc) to get a new one coded - OK to do so even if the original fob is lost.

Martin.

I think you should get one stove key, one fob with key, one slim fob with key. If you don't have the main fob that would be more of a concern than the key being missing from the slim fob.

Alan, what did you end up doing?

Holding on thats what, went to the bike show and hate the green one, looked at the BMW 1300GT as well, I reckon I will hang on until the new reg comes out in March and make a decison then.

For the minute my Sprint is in the garage, not worth it in the snow even though I use it every day.

I have to confess I am tempted by the BMW 1300GT as well.
When the time comes to upgrade its going to be a very tough decision

Two GTR's for the price of that. Its not a bad looking bike from a distance, but the layout of the clocks and the facia is bloody ugly.

One day I want a Goldwing, but I dont think I could be swayed to buy that.

Can't say the Goldwing does it for me tbh.

By the time I come to get a new bike I'm praying that Kawasaki have an equivalent. The GTR is a great bike that could be made better by a few tweaks. Its a tourer ffs so add on the tourer extras that people want.

The little things like:

  • integrated sat nav
  • integrated bluetooth mp3 player. Just so I can drop my music on a SD card, pop it in and I'm good to go.
  • Automatic adjustable suspension
  • Fuse blocks for easier wiring of accessories
  • Heated seat
  • Cruise control

I have to admit I do like my sat nav, the Zumo 550. I've had a Tom Tom Rider V1 & V2 before and they are not a patch on the Zumo. I have music stored on the Zumo's SD card which via bluetooth comes through to my lid, although it'll soon be wired when I get the Autocom installed. Cruise control would be good as would a heated seat, I'll agree with you on that one. I'm not sure how much equipment you could connect upto each accessory block, front and rear before you overloaded them.

what's the price point of the beamer? i bet its more expensive with the crap bmw quality weve come to expect. kawa should up their game, maybe add alot more extra at the same price point. yes, it mean lower profit margin on a single unit but bigger margins on volume sales.

I have to say the BMW looks stunning, but the display is AWFUL !!  Cost of a new BMW 1600 ?? But chaps ... I like the idea of looking around too .. The GTR1400 is top drawer for me but who knows what you might come across one day, or take something for a test ride and think "WOW I never thought I'd like one of those " !!

I spoke to the BMW dealership today chasing up my camera system. I asked them how much the BMW 1600 was going to be, just out of curiosity, they were very elusive, and in the end they would not say. I think that speaks volumes, they claim the final price has not been agreed yet.
