Title: Cig light / accessory fuse
Post by: viper on February 23, 2012, 02:53:06 PM
cig lighter  fuse is only 5a and pops when asked to run a mini tyre compressor :mfr_lol:

surprises me that its so low rated , there is a spare 5a fuse in the holder under the seat but i popped that as well. Ive now changed it to a 10amp

just thought you might want to know in case you are planning a trip and find this out when you come to inflate your pvc girlfriend  :mfr_lol:

oh, and they are the mini fuses , not the car size ones ......damn

They were 10a on the older model. I wonder what caused them to drop to a 5a? Is there something at risk now that you've put a 10a in there?

the only thing to consider is that the fuse should be the weakest link on the circuit, the wire diameter looks the same for the cig lighter as other circuits with larger fuses so it looks like kawsaki just dropped the fuse size for some percieved safety benefit, mine is now a 10 amp and its staying like that unless i have a problem!

The heated grips of the '10 and newer are on the same circuit so they dropped the amperage of the accy plug. You should be fine with a 10A as long as you don't try and inflate the girlfriend and warm your hands at the same time.

I did the same thing and mentioned it on a previous thread - popped the fuse with mini tyre compressor. I'm thinking of sticking a 10amp fuse on that circuit just to use my compressor. It's not like I'll be using anything else at the same time.

I use the lead I plug in to charge the battery to run the compressor then no hassles of fuses popping.

The whole point of a fuse is to provide a 'safety net' for running accessories through your aux output.

Its easy to carry a few various sized spares on board..I do

The 5a fuse kept popping on my 2010 bike when I fitted my sat nav. I took it back to the main dealer under warranty and they found that water had got into the cigarette type socket on the dash and was causing the fuse to blow. It was dried and cleaned under warranty and I've had no problems at all since. Hope this may help

Doh!! I've just gone and blown the cig lighter fuse, where will I find the spare fuses? It seems I need a 5amp one.

Yes I plugged in my tyre inflator thing.  :nono:

Found the blown fuse, its dead. Looked for the spare fuse.....and that has already gone and been used for something.  :censored:
Tomorrow, in and amongst going out for a ride I'll be buying some spare fuses.

Are they the small mini fuses or the larger car type variety?

Theyre the smaller ones, just had a look at local Kawasaki Dealers and we are going near one tomorrow in Lancashire so I'll pop in and get a few.

I didn't mean a company called autosave - just meant any motoring store - independents for example.  We have one in our village, one man band and the fuses are only 20 or 30 pence

Ah, ha, light dawns on marble head!  :mfr_lol:
I can get my PC to autosave but I'd never heard of a store called autosave.

With all the farkles we put on our bike, I highly recommend the Fuzeblocks, it is made in the USA, very high quality wiring, built-in relay, 6 terminals with 10 amp each.
I hooked all my external devices to it, radio amp, GPS, Hyperlight, and some secret gizmos...
I insulated the bottom of our useless glove box pan and put the Fuze block in it, so easy access when a fuse blows.

I just fitted a 10A fuse into my accessory slot and my tyre compressor now works

I ended up buying a multipack of 100 fuses (I think) for halfords, for 8 quid. Should last me a lifetime!
