What's a good home security system to invest in? We had a burglary today and if I ever catch the bastards I swear I will kill them. What I need is a decent burglar alarm ideally with a panic button. If it comes with a sawn off shotgun all the better.
I'm kicking myself for not installing IP cameras that would upload to my remote server. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Very pissed off that someone invaded my personal space, and the fact they took a knife from the kitchen upstairs shows their intent. I pray karma catches up with them quick and that they die a slow painful death. Bastards
Our Fido, I strongly believe once stopped our house getting screwed over shortly after we had moved in. The rear kitchen window was forced but they didn't bother coming in.....not too sure what made them change their minds.

I would never encourage anyone to get a dog for the wrong reasons, but I swear by them. Full time commitment though and not everyone's happy with dog hairs all over the house and car and having to walk a dog whatever the weather three times a day.
Hopefully they will get caught but regrettably statistics indicate they wont.
Sorry to hear that, i hope you do not get them because you would not be riding your machine for at least 15 years.
Try your local police, they used to do home security visits, my mate had the same happen to him and they advised the way to secure the home best, but at a cost, good quality locks etc are a small fortune but what price for peace of mind.

I'm really sorry to hear this Kwikas I can imagine it has really spooked you and you family. It's way past time that we started culling some of the :shit: that we have walking the streets.
Some of the items can't be replaced like my late ma's ring
Scum, absolute scum.
I really do sympathise with you Kwikas, its the lowest of crimes to invade someones personal space and steal their property. Sadly its synptomatic of todays society, and is usually to pay for a drug related habit
The advice given to you by Zedmeister is as good as any.. speak to your local police as they should be able to help, advise and maybe recommend a security specialist
My advice is to get the best system that you can a££ord, as skimping on such investments is a very bad policy
I have an alarm sytem which covers the whole house, both externally and internally, which is supplemented by a CCTV system which records, it works 24/7 and is improved by some powerful lights which work on sensors that are integrated with the alarm system...it even has a 'Bleep' which warns me of anyone approaching. This may all sound OTT but the alarm and lights system was installed by the previous owner of my house, which used to be the local village Post Office, so its a good system...I've found the original instruction booklet and it was installed by a company called GJD..this is their website
http://www.gjd.co.uk/
I don't know anymore about them except to say my system is exceptional
The CCTV system I have was installed by a local company, there will be plenty in your area, and cost me about £600 installed, its very good also and has very effective cameras
Sorry to have gone on at length but I feel for you and hope that I have helped.
I used to have CCTV front and rear, in fact I still have the cameras fitted but thanks to some pesky squirrels the cables supplying the power to the cameras got chewed up. We used to have a problem with squirrels but now they know better!! Cant be bothered to take all the carpets and floor boards up to get to the cabling. Next time I install CCTV it'll be of the wireless variety.
I know Maplins sell some decent camera systems and they are discounted at the moment.
Sorry to here about it Dood
i have 2 dogs and a monitered alarm system by ADT,
if anyone was to break in there is no alarm outside, but 150db internal alarm and that's loud enough to make ya feel ill... also ADT will dispatch the plod ...
Also i have a crossbow and compound bow in the bedroom, both ideal for home defence and perfectly legal, so if Mr scumbag comes up the stairs he is going to find 14inches of pointy fiberglass coming down the stairs at 200fps.
Guys, thanks for advice and links.
As much as I would prefer to have a German Shepard, the missus says no to that one.
I like the idea of security hooked up to the police. I like the kind that Roger proposes, so will probably go with a mix. I'll also be fitting an IP camera just so I can see who is nosing around.
Mate ... I am really sorry to hear that dreadful news .. truly. I find burglary one of the most distasteful offences on the charge sheet.
Without teaching you or any one else here how to suck eggs there are simple ways to deter the nasty bastards in the first place ....
1. In the winter leave lights on in the house ... if you go out at lunchtime and it gets dark by the time you get home then put the lights on before you go ... for the cost of a bit of electricity it has to be worth coming home to a lit house ... you can all walk down the road and see who is not home in the winter, and so can Mr Slag.
2. Leave a car in the drive .... I know chaps who live in the London area who have bought a wreck for £100 and left it on the drive .... move it around every now and then, clean it, whatever, so long as it looks as if some one is at home .... £100 is very cheap for a burglary initiative ....
3. Buy a dummy alarm box with flashing light, and switch it on.
4. In the summer, only leave your top windows open to cool the house ... who in their right minds will have all their windows shut in the summer ... if your windows are open Mr Slag would think you are at home.
5. Curtains open and shut ... move them about.
6. When you go away ask your neighbour to pop in and perhaps use your driveway as their own ....
7. As K has said ,install some software to record the bastards in your house and then let the Police view it ... if they are local you may get lucky.
Not the ultimate list I know but I do all these things in the hope that it is better than nothing .......
Let us know of any updates ....
Thanks for those Rusty. A lot of them I will be implementing.
Its the violation of personal space that is really getting everyone down.
Sorry to hear about this Kwikas.
We went through it when I was young.
My Mum & sisters were frightened for ages and would not stay in the house on their own.
I slept with a baseball bat under my bed from then on.
Dad fitted alarms to the front door (where they broke in) and garage door.
We already had heavy wooden roller blinds over all ground floor windows and kitchen/patio door.
We got lucky in that they only stole our TV, VCR and some worthless shiny-shiny from the lounge.
Insurance replaced that but it was months before we could relax again.
Personally I wouldn't shoot the thieving basts. I'd break all their fingers.

When we catch these balls of scum lets stop mollycoddling them and just throw them in a vat of acid. Of course thats after they have been shot.

The EU can shove that legislation where the sun doesn't shine for burglars
I would prefer catch them, strip them naked, break their fingers, but fuck them with a cactus, lop off their balls with bolt cutters, stuff them in their mouths, rough up their skin with an electric sander, lower them into a big vat of salt, then vinegar then and only then......Shoot the feckers! :2guns:

This really is a fascinating subject, no really, these figures are the ones used by respective insurance companies to calculate their insurance cover rates.
Now, if you assume that insurance companies arrive at the 'high spots' for burglary by applying a basic calculation of, number of burglaries/population, there will always be a case where a low population area that suffers maybe 3-4 crimes per annum will appear as a 'hot spot'. BUT, if you apply the same formulea to a densly populated town/city then those areas may appear to be a lesser crime risk.
I reckon this theory is confirmed by the fact that Apperly Bridge is now considered a crime 'hot spot'.
There are less than 60 people living in and around my village...ergo 5 crimes a year would result in a ratio of 8.3r % if that figure is then applied to a larger, densely populated town/city it would be tantamount to a bloody revolution.
I suspect that statistics can be made to prove any point you like.....or am I becoming more cynical

Huddersfield used to be a nice town to live in. It really is the gateway to the Pennines. Easy access to Manchester and Leeds, lovely scenery and not much going on really.
For whatever reasons over the past few years its just got bad. This isn't politically correct, but in years gone by the scum were kept in their own localities. Then the property boom kicked off and council land was sold off to developers who promptly built expensive houses, and the council rehoused the scum around Huddersfield. So areas with low crime now have high crime rates.
We've been looking at moving and you really have to be precise about where you move because there's just too much scum around you. Unless we move to the outskirts which we've been seriously contemplating.
We used to have a bit of a drug and drink problem round near the shops close to where i live, and there is a path that goes behind the house which is where the bike garage is and also my gym.
Now a lot of the little scotes that would hang about there, I knew from working the door, i had only just retired from 'bouncing :hammer:' so one evening i popped round to the corner shop, had a word with Mr Patel and 'asked' him to refraine from selling vodka to underage kids... he seemed reluctant at first but after some gentle encouragement agreed. Now you have to show your OAP pass to get so much as a can of shandy.
My next port of call was round the back and a gaggle of 'Yoofs' again i encouraged them that this was not a place that they would like to hang out, seeing as it was all dark and secluded and sometimes really bad things happen to people loitering in those sorts of places.
I am a firm believer that one should be responsible for where one lives, I even run the local niebourhood watch *snigger*... in these dark times, certain elements of society, understand just one thing... Fear... and i'm more than happy to oblige.

I was born, bred and raised in Huddersfield, its my home town, my daughters live there....the last time I took a drive through the town centre I just didn't recognise the place.....Bloody hell even Rushworths store has disappeared along with its distinctive round clock, it was opposite Burtons and the Starlight disco and ...and ....and :sweatdrop:
Most of the crime stats which are put out and made accessible to the public are manipulated and misleading. I wouldn't go drinking in Halifax where I work, it's a dangerous, volatile town rife with scum who wouldn't bat an eye at robbing or assaulting you after dark. We're told that crime has been reduced, but we all know that in reality it hasn't, the only thing which has been reduced is the number of crimes which are recorded, thereby statistically suggesting that crime has been reduced.
Old Coney, if where you live only suffers about 5 crimes per year, you are living in paradise.
I was brought up here, why the hell we moved is anyone's guess!!

TBH I don't recall any crimes in this village in the last couple of years,....really..... the figure of 5 that I used was just to show comparison.
And Steve, I'm sitting here guessing that your reason for leaving that part of the world must have been a goodun  I too know Halifax very very well, as I worked there for eleven years
Gill and I are visiting Cornwall in June this year and we just can't wait
A typical 24hrs in Halifax consists unfortunately of multiple burglary's, maybe one robbery, more domestic assaults than I have fingers on two hands, alcohol related fights resulting in anything from a bruised ego to murder, so many suspected drug deals taking place you wouldn't believe it was possible. Thats just the crime related matters, then there's the multiple reports of anti social driving from some nuggets, it goes on and on. If you think about it too much it can really get you quite depressed knowing how violent our society is today. I've just become conditioned to it and unfortunately it's just the norm these days in most major cities and towns.
Halifax sounds really nice and quiet Mr Wolf ..... get yourself down here to the soufffff and have a patrol round the delights of The Met :mfr_lol:
You guys have it really rough, I couldn't work in the Met.
Having watched lots of the Police documentary programmes on T.V I would have to say that my respect goes out to all serving officers. I couldn't do the job as I simply couldn't/wouldn't stand for the shit that is dealt your way...I'd be locked up for assault after my first shift
+1
I don't think I'd even make it to the end of the first shift.
I recall about one of my dads mates reminiscing about policing in the 60s and 70s. Along the lines of roughing up criminals in the cells.
When we book prisoners into the cells no matter what they have done we have to refer to them as gentlemen or lady, because we are a service not a force & saying this gentleman has just been arrested on suspicion of whatever sounds better than saying this piece of shit has just been arrested on suspicion of....

P.C mad world, but owt that diffuses a situation has to be the way forward
A true story from when I was younger (shortened as much as possible)
Friend goes out for a meal with hubby in the evening.
Returns home later that night to hear dog being sick in the kitchen - rushes in to find out what's wrong with dog.
Dog coughing and being sick, on floor, obviously sick, but blood and 2 fingers!
Hears commotion in back garden to find burglar writhing in pain.
Calls police (and ambulance - I suspect)
Asks Mr Policeman if they are now going to put down her Doberman.
Policeman say "no, the dog was doing its job!"
I love this story, and it (the burgular) get what it deserves, just a shame the NHS put him back together (again, I suspect).
Neil
I have also heard that story, :mfr_lol: Just deserts perhaps?
