So, when I got my GTR it included a Givi (v large) top box - Monokey (I think, the better, sturdier, out of M K and M Lock?)
I'd like to be able swap between the GTR and my V-strom. I have also posted onto the vstrom forum, and done some t'internet searching.
It seems I need a 'bike specific' plate (SR3101M) - anyone know if I need anything else (additional plate), fittings etc.
On the GTR the rack also has 'wings' that go under the rack, (no bloody photos - sorry, and am in car today) so not easy to explain and google images didn't find anthing... BUT cant find / see that these are needed / available for the v strom kit, but it is a large (and therfore heavy box) - maybe the 'wing type' bracket is needed to distributes the weight?
Sorry if its a numpty question - but only got experience with OEM boxes on previous bikes.
The Givi kit for GTR includes the wings you mention, which provide extra support for the box on the GTR. My Givi box (the cheaper one) is just bolted to the GTR rack, which is OK, but I'll replace it at some point.
If you've ordered the bike specific kit for the V-Strom then that is probably all you need.
The Givi kit is ugly and unnecessary.
Just buy a plate and adapter kit from these people.

Jeez guys I thought the post was clear?
GTR sorted came c/w with box and rack
v-strom rack needed / wing rack maybe needed, but thanx anyway
Well I'm guessing you have a brand new V-Strom? This page contains all the info you need:
http://www.givi.co.uk/My-motorcycle/?ma=SUZUKI&mo=DL-650-V-Strom-L2-11 (http://www.givi.co.uk/My-motorcycle/?ma=SUZUKI&mo=DL-650-V-Strom-L2-11)
If you have a MONOKEY box you need the SR3101, not the SR3101M, kit. This contains everything you need to fit to your V-Strom.
The wings I presume are part of the kit for the GTR they sell, i.e. this one:
http://www.givi.co.uk/attachfile/content/prodotti_regionali_uk/20920/0.0.1.varc_sr410v46.jpg (http://www.givi.co.uk/attachfile/content/prodotti_regionali_uk/20920/0.0.1.varc_sr410v46.jpg)
i.e. the extra supports? Givi include these for the GTR because when you slap a plate on the standard GTR rack it's not quite stable enough. I'm guessing they think this is not required for the V-Strom to remain stable, so they don't make it a part of the kit for that bike.
At some point I'm going to get a GTR kit and a MONOKEY box, but currently putting up with my old MONOLOCK from my last bike.
I was swapping my Givi monokey box between my GTR and my zzr1200. Box fitted on the gtr ok so I just bought a used base plate for the box off ebay and fitted that to the zed, never bothered with the wings thing , dont like to overload the box too much for stability
Cheers cpettifer MUCH appreciated :) :) :)

Here's hoping my information is correct..!
I have a Givi Monokey Maxia top box fitted to my GTR
its a great quality box which meets our needs
Its fitted to a Givi SR 410 plate which although fiddly to install is really rock solid...seen here

On a previous GTR I had the older non supported (without wings) Givi rack and it wasn't anywhere near as sturdy as this one
Hope this helps
Cheers mate, thats exactly what I have got too. Found the rack needed for the v-strom on t'internet.
£52.55 from Givi dealer - thought I'd try my Suzi dealer to see if they could match, and they are pretty helpful, quoted £33
!! WTF???
well there are some good deals to be had at the moment...it pays to shop around.
Sorry, I'm a little late with the response here but here goes.
Easy and simple. The differences are the monokey and (I think) the monolock.
The picture of the rack with the "wings" is a monokey, and I believe it won't fit to the monolock.
SWMBO's ER6 is fitted with a monolock and it won't fit my GTR's monokey because, the monokey system has male and female connectors with the male connectors mounted on the plate. Where as the monolock, has the male connectors on the box.
If you want photos, I can provide if you would like me too.
Hope that helps.
Neil
this is very sturdy

Looks nice and sturdy but what kind of top box fits on that? :whistling:
Mine surely won't!
Damn!.... i saw the title 'Top Box Swapping' and thought this was a kinky post :innocent:

It takes the standard kawasaki box, which is a givi monolock, the rack just looks different thats all

Does the box wobble on it at all?

Probably not 'wobble' but rattle for sure.

For sure it does not rattle, its a tight sliding fit
Those two last plates are for the monolock top boxes.
Both are "female" plates where the pins are on the boxes.

Every other base I've seen so far had rubber spacers to prevent rattling, so I'm surprised if yours won't rattle.
But if you say so I won't argue.
Where can I get one and how much?
The pads are then mounted on my plate, does not vibrate, do not swing the trunk.

ive put the rubber feet on the underneath of the box.
Its not something you can buy as I made it . I fabricated it to be a nice tight fit, is a combination of the original gtr rack and the monolock givi rack, Upon inspection the wobble was down to the two plastic racks and the way they attached together, the arms on my 2010 GTR are fairly sturdy and by getting rid of the plastic combo and replacing with aluminium billet made it all quite acceptable.
:ohplease:Vipera ....niente fronzoli x il GTR 1400, scusami ma queste mie piastre sono insuperabili come lo è il GTR 1400.

Viper that looks fantastic , and just the job if like me you prefer to retain the Kawasaki 47ltr box. I dont suppose if I cross your palm with gold you could create one for my bike :ohplease:
TBH , once you have paid for the materials and my cost of all the man hours of work and postage ect It just would work out too expensive for you . I dont think its professional enough to sell, its basically hand made rather than that off a CNC machine. The catch is hand fashioned and the slots in it have cutter marks that I cant get into to sand the out. The aluminium wont stay that mirror finish for long, each year it will need a repolish
I posted a how to on another forum if anyone wants to have a go at making their own.

Its worth pointing out that the GIVI base plate and monokey top box on my bike are all standard fitment.
My point is that if you look closely at the pictures of said GIVI plate on my bike as shown on page one of this thread, you will see that I have glued extra rubber (tap washers) to the cushion/pads that come as standard with the plate. The reason for this is that the GIVI top box rattles on the GIVI plate, and it is bloody annoying
I contacted GIVI about this, and they sent me two more cushions to replace the standard ones that came with their plate, but alas the extra cushions they sent are identical to the orignal ones, so they don't improve the fitment...Its a problem with the kit, which is now solved with the aid of the tap washers...amazing eh

your fix for sure does almost solve the problem. I found with my set up that the givi plate is bolted to the gtr plate and there is movement between the two , not rattling , thats solved with your fix but still a fair bit of flexing. the gtr plastic plate is fairly pathetic and anything attached to this will just compound the movement.
No not at all Viper....the GIVI plate when bolted to my top plate is solid aided by the substantial 'wings' that come with the mounting plate.
The rattle that I was experiencing was between the top box and the GIVI plate, its now gone courtesy of Plumb Centre :mfr_lol:
I just thought ....if you look at thepic I have posted of Gillian my pillion you will see the same size GIVI box on my 2009 bike without the wings....the box still attached ok and stayed in place right across Europe but I remember it was very wobbly.

ah, you have the wings, that will defo stiffen everything up.
my point was that the original gtr plastic plate flexed around a lot, adding another plate with a further out centre of gravity made my plate flex even more , that why i made a solid metal one.
your wings( arms ) are the most stable set up you can get , i just didnt want that look and i like nice shiny things

You are absolutely right (of course :agree: :mfr_lol: )...the wing things make a world of difference, they are however a bit of a bitch to fit, but worth the effort
I had to look at this topic when I read the title "Top Box Swapping"...
I thought is was a new sex hobby for motorcyclists!!! lol
Thing is
The GTR fob is easily recognise-able.
I leave it there, cause i'd open my mouth and get into trouble.... :-)

Mr Nok This subject is a very old chestnut, you ask why the big K cant produce a "safe and serviceable rack". I would suggest that in fact they do. As far as I am aware (and this thread has been done to death) no one has had a rack fail, and no one has had their underclothes scattered across the M1 because the admittedly less than top notch top box supplied as a official accessory has burst its seams, or otherwise malfunctioned. The problem that most have is that the box wobbles about some what, but if like me you care to trust that the manufacturer fits kit that is fit for purpose, and you dont suffer paranoia from reading posts/ threads such as this one, then things will be fine.
True Geoff,, fitting a larger GIVI box does require some modification, but as you say the standard jobbie is fine
P.S why don't they fit a hugger either.....and whilst we are on the subject those pillion foot pegs are crap :mfr_lol:
