This mod is for the 2007 - 2009 models. The later models have this functionality already available.
This mod places a switch on the handlebars, making it easier to cycle the onboard display.

Nice mod, I dont know how you work out how to do this stuff. :o
Nice mod, always wondered how it was done and amazing that someone worked out which point to solder into.
Valerio posted a vid about this and i noticed that he had a neat small micro button , dont know how easy it is to fit

Thanks for showing that Viper. Looks like he drilled into the housing. I think I might do the same.

Got my nephew to do the soldering :)
On a serious note you boys are very clever .... I would probably break something trying to get all that off ... but I suppose, as I have been reading here for so long, is that once you can do this sort of stuff the "upgrades and extras" that you can add would go on forever and take up all your spare time !! If I were wearing a hat i would take it off to you. :)
Does this totally disable the original switch, or can that still be used?
P.S. I like what they did with your drive. :)
Nope, doesn't disable the original switch. You know you want to do the mod LW.
As for the drive, got that done a few months ago. Believe it or not, that is decorative concrete.
I've got a new switch for this mod. I'm going to put it next to the flash to pass switch.
What drill bit type for drilling into plastic? Just a wood one? Hole to drill is 7mm

Yeah, just a standard HSS (high speed steel) el-cheapo one will do from Wickes etc.
Id recomm a wood drill bit with a sharp pilot point, so it does not dance around at first, screwfix bq ect.

Pilot punch it first

Or place a tiny square of masking tape where you want to drill. This will also stop the drill bit drifting.
Thanks for the advice LW. That's what I ended up doing.
Remounted the switch:

where did you get the switch from and is it waterproof, is it a momentry switch or latching?

Off eBay. Its momentary but not waterproof. I just made sure the terminals had dielectric grease applied and covered with heat shrink. From what I understand, none of the buttons are waterproof.
thanks KF , mmmm i could do with a latching one, the waterproof issue worrys me as its up facing ,its for a different function
That's a very neat job....impressive

Maplin sell waterproof switches. What function did you have in mind?

I have a small micro switch just taped to my clutch cable which powers off our intercom, we prefer the autocom to be on open mike , that is until the yaking gets too much. Wanted to fit a proper switch, ive ordered a small yellow one off fleabay and will just position it facing down or at least backwards to protect ingress, but in the housing like what you did!
Just be careful with the location. You want to leave enough room in the casing so that's its not obstructed on any side. See my pics for info.

there is zip room in there , just had a look, on my model i already have the cycle switch so its fairly full, looks like i will have to make another shiney bracket to go with my other shiney brackets
I did purchase one of these but never got around to fitting it.

clever idea , although dont think its for me, i tend to use some thin plate aluminium and knock up a bracket that i attach to a bolt somewhere
Well done Kwikasfuki, I have just spent as happy few hours doing this mod. It is one of those things that has bugged me since day one, and now it is fixed.
Great tip, very worth wile doing,
Thanks for your time and effort putting this on here!
got mine a few days ago, havent tried in real earnest yet.... but had a coupla qucik goes to undo the bolt and it wouldnt shift!!
I am (unlike me) gonna be ultra prepared and cover tank so that when the bolt finally gives the wrench dont fly into the tank and damage it!!!

Which bolt are you talking about?
errr - are we talking about the same thing or have I (or you) got forumconfuseitus??
The bolt on the inside of the bar (handle) so I can insert the tubular rod and then the longer bolt...
(its the 'thingy' from the us - link above ...somewhere...)
I'm going with forumconfuseitus  :mfr_lol:
Are you on about the thing from this link?

Where did you mount the switch?
I mounted the switch in the left hand switch unit, as described by you.
Switch via Maplin
Thanks again

Thread swapping ...... "Gonna need a bigger boat" (spanner!!!)
Love the look of this mod.. I was only thinking the other day that its a pain in the ass trying to scroll through the menu on the go...
Ive found a Momentary Switch with Waterproof Cover on web so gonna order it and do this mod... Watch this space
Just a thought ....... has anyone tried using a multimeter between the solder point and the pins at the female part of the plug to check for continuity?
I'd guess this has already been checked, but if there is continuity to one of the pins then it should be possible to wire into the loom instead of the dash.
Good point Shaggs. Didn't check that for an alternative approach
Shaggs that has just gone straight over my head :mfr_lol:
I have no idea what you are on about :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
Sorry Debs, I'm an engineer, didn't mean it to sound complicated.
Basically you can buy a cheap multimeter from a place like Maplins for a fiver, its pretty crap as meters go, but will do this job no problem. You put the meter onto a setting which measures resistance. Touch the meter leads together and the display will show 0 and the meter may also make a beep to show you have a circuit or "continuity"
Right, next step ..... place one of the leads onto the point where Asif shows you where the wire is to be soldered, and keep it there. Then run the other multimeter lead along all the socket pins at the back of the display. If the multimeter beeps on any of those pins then it shows you have a circuit or "continuity" between that pin to the solder point. This means you can then look at the loom plug, find the corresponding pin and then just solder onto that wire..........
Alternatively, if you give me an idea when you're thinking of pulling out the dash, I might be able to tie it into one of my many trips back to Plymouth, as you're not too far out of the way. I'll check it for you, and if its possible will solder a wire into the loom, if not, I'll solder the wire into the dash for you............. you're making the coffee though! :whistling:
Ok... So what you are saying is that there may be a pin in the plug already assigned to that solder point? Its just a case of finding which pin corresponds with it? Am I understanding that correctly?
Then all you do is find the wire in the loom that connects to the pin and connect the switch to the wire? :mfr_lol:
Basically yes. There might be a common connection between the solder point and one of the pins at the back of the plug socket. If you find that you can solder a wire directly to the loom wire in the plug.
I guess there might not be much of an advantage in this for you, other than it being a little neater, but it might help another member in the future as you could post the cable colour / pin number on here, then anyone who does the mod wouldn't have to take their dash apart.
I'd have checked it out on my own bike for you, but I have the 2010 model.
Hope this helps Debs
There won't be a connection on the multiplug as you need to break into the the circuit between the button and the readout and thats all internal.
Ah yes thank god im a lazy b****** :mfr_lol: as i couldnt be assed changing the consol before during or after riding.

Shaggs... I have bought one of these for £5 off ebay.. Which setting do I now put it on to check the resistance?
Use the red one at the bottom next to hFE.
That's the continuity beeper.
If it beeps you have zero resistance, or thereabouts.
Thank you Boomer...
Just tried it by touching ends together and it beeped...
Nice one Debs, good luck with it all.
Ok here goes... I checked to see if one of the pins was connected to the solder point but unfortunately they are not .. There are 3 spare pins which must have been used on the later modals. It was worth checking and I am glad I did
Anyway Ive soldered a wire on and checked to see if it worked.. Yay it does... Just need to order the switch I have seen..
Nice one Debs.
At least you have a multimeter to use when you re-wire your house or whatever project you're going to take on next :smartass:
Already used it for something else... Bought a push bike for my flat mate.. Broke a wire on the lights thats lit by dynamo.. used the Multimeter to find the break in the wire
Ive now fitted the switch and very happy with it... All works fine
Switch didn't say it was waterproof but I have put Vaseline around where it pushes in to keep the water out
You can buy the switch from ebay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300749835347?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_2295wt_1190

As you already know.. the 2010 gtr1400 and the new 2012 zzr1400 already has this function of changing the modes via the handel bar switch. it's beats the hell out of me... why kawasaki did not think this would be a excellent safety option to fit as standard on both the pre 2010 gtr1400 and pre 2012 zzr1400 I know kawasaki recommends not to change the mode while riding, but surely kawasaki are not that naive to think nobody would not try, after all... they put the mode switch right in the middel of the clocks in front of the rider within easy reach! that's like asking the wife to walk past a shoe shop and not buy shoes... :mfr_lol:
