Title: pillion footpegs
Post by: O.C. on January 24, 2012, 10:31:06 AM
the standard pillion footpegs are not ideal and I reckon would be better with a rubber covering for confort/grip

On my last GTR I fitted the lowering kit available from Larrys, but I understand that the Kawasaki ER6F standard footpeg will fit straight onto the GTR, which seems like a good idea albeit it doesn't lower the pegs

The OEM parts are pricey, but I have seen this site, which is unfortunately some distance away, selling front pegs which may or may not do the job....does anyone have any experience of this mod? or am I going to have to spend with larry again

they will work but need a slight modification  !

The difference between front pegs and rear pegs is the fitting bolt size. Front pegs use 12mm as the ones in your link and rear ones use a 6mm pin.
I too did not want to stump up £80 for FJR or ERN ones so i used 12mm ones for the front , you then either need to drill out the whole on the rear to accomodate or buy a piece of 12mm hollow steel from b and q and make an insert for the new pegs to take them down to 6mm.

I did this 2 years ago and my pillion stands on them to get on and off and are still holding strong.

Its shocking that kawasaki dont fit rubber pegs on a touring bike, other makers do on much lesser machines !

i used these, cheaper for the pair , not originals but they are ok

ive got some pics if you need them

£80 ?  That is awful ! How can K justify that ?? I was giving the GTR a good clean yesterday ( I know, I'm always cleaning it ! ) and my left foot peg rubber is worn a fair bit but the right one looks fine and was thinking of having new ones for the 12000 mile service .. now I am thinking that perhaps "worn" looks good !  ;D

Thanks Viper, that looks like just the job

Larrys tell me that their lowering kit will not fit my bike unless it has the standard spud launcher pipe...which it doesn't, and TBH Gillian doesn't complain about leg room, but I would feel much happier that she isn't going to slip on the metal pegs, which I are a stoopid fitment on a bike of this calibre.

So I reckon I'll try your recommended mod with some tube tube/sleeve to reduce the bolt size on the hanger.

Thanks again  ;)

olde cloney, making those reducers for your new rear pegs is not as easy as i remembered, so i was doing some fabricating today and i knocked you up a pair, if you want them, if not its ok , i will find another home for them.

They will reduce a 12mm hole down to a 6mm hole , made from steel so will need some clear nail varnish to stop the surface rust

Thanks Viper..much appreciated..,

I haven't made any up as yet. I was going to wait until the pegs arrive and then fabricate something.

If you already have some spacers made that would be great, and will save me a job

I'll P.M you and sort that out...   ;)

Hi olde coney

With reference to the lower rear pegs, I have fitted some to my GTR. The problem that I'm finding now is that my other half's foot catches the exhaust if she is not careful. In her defence she has only a small foot (size3) any larger and it would really scrape it. It is the standard potatoe thrower !!!!!!

I have looked at a bracket to protect it but not got around to buying it yet will have it fitted by summer!!!!!! :)

Cheers Sidders :)

ive got the peg lowers off my zrx1200, they fit my Gtr fine but they are about 2mm above the exhaust but quite forward, my shoe size 8 pillion does not seem to have a problem , I wonder if they are angled different or my pillion is just more bike friendly  :)

Checked a couple of er6n's today and neither had rubber topped pillion footpegs so if you were looking you would have to specify the right year/model. The 2012 model has them, there are some pics in Bike this month. Has anyone used either projektd or sporttouring's footpeg lowering kits?

Thanks Bradders...the pegs required would have been from an Er6F (faired), not the n (naked) version

I don't think its possible to lower the pegs on my bike as I have a two brothers can fitted which would likely foul on the lowering kit. The main objective was to replace the standard metal pegs with a rubber covered variety, to increase pillion comfort.

Motorcycle Larrys do offer a rubber covered (FJR) kit which also lowers the pegs, but apparently only with the standard exhaust

Pegs fitted today.. its an easy fix and took less than 20 minutes in all.

first remove old crap pegs.. release 'C' clip pin and plate. take care not to lose compresion spring and ball bearing

New peg offered up

Pin, spring plate and ball.. you need to save spring & ball bearing. plate 'C' clip and pin can be reused

New peg in place using saved pin spacer/plate and 'C' clip....gently squeeze 'C' clip back into place.

Finished job...obviously you need to do both sides  :mfr_lol:

Sorry about the poor quality pictures and its worth knowing that the new pegs will recoil but will not stay in the 'out of use/upright' position as the ball/spring mechanism cannot be used with this mod...I'll look at doing something about this..but it really isn't a problem as pilliuon comfort/safety is vastly improved the pegs cost about £20  plus P &P.

I take it that the 12mm spacer went in ok with any feckling.

I did away with the spring and pin, used a 6mm stainless bolt and nut and just tensioned it up so the pegs were a movable put tight fit up and down.

the spacer went in just fine, and only a small amount of persuasion was needed toi line it all up

I did consider drilling the peg to accomodate the spring/ball retract, but their isn't enough material in the new pegs to allow for drilling out

The new pegs are a massive improvement over the old 'standard' ones ...thanks for the tip and also the 12mm/6mm shims which fit perfectly

a pint is owed or whatever other tipple is your choice

Not sure how accurate this is but an MOT tester once told me that if the pegs wont retract then that's a fail, again, not sure whether this was bull  :shit: , (see what I did there)   or the truth, surely an MOT tester wouldn't lie, they're all   aren't they?

Ermmm. Steve, Within my post I actually I did say that they "will recoil"..... its just that they don't stay upright on their own, the bolt method that Viper used is one way round this

Its  a simple fix.. when I work it out....maybe a postmans Red rubber band would do the job   :mfr_lol:

Su vinculación producción de la reducción entre paréntesis son excelentes.

Supongo que están diseñados para funcionar con el sistema de escape de serie en el que habrá espacio suficiente para que bajen totalmente

El problema que yo y otros tenemos es que los kits de bajas, no funciona cuando un sistema de escape del mercado de accesorios está equipado

just watched his video and on my 2010 model , his is 2008 , my stock exhaust collar is much closer to the original bracket than his. I have peg lowers and they are a nats dick away from the exhaust
