I'm sure lots has been written about which rear hugger is best
on my last GTR I had te skidmarx carbon variety, which was ok but to honest was more form than function
The Accessory section shown within this forum is fantastic and gives detail of the Motax hugger which from the pics looks to be a much better item
has anyone fitted one and if so how good is it
Thanks

mine a skidmarx and it dose an excellent job of keeping the shock and rectifier free from water and all the shit that gets chucked up :) dam well made to, very strong had no issues with it, "dose what it says on the can"
Agreed 2kwacks, the Skidmarx hugger does work......... I should have explained myself better.
After looking at pictures of the Motax hugger it just seems to cover more of the rear wheel and follow the profile of the rear tyre closer, so it might perform even better than the Skidmarx variety,
That's what I meant to say when I was asking for advice/opinion
I also have the skidmarx version which follows the line of the tyre, am very pleased with it.
Alan
Hi BigAlan, it was after I saw this picture on the Motax site that I compared it with the hugger that I fitted to a previous GTR.
The Motax one seems to be a closer fit and that bit longer than my own

Like BA I have the standard Skidmarx hugger and it's very good. Carbon would have been nice though ! :)

funny you should say that ;D because I got my hugger before the remus carbon exhaust, at the time I was not going to change the standard exhaust, so opted for gloss black hugger. if I had got the carbon exhaust first, most likely would have gone for the carbon hugger as well :) here's a few pic's of it fitted, it defo helps keeps the shock and rectifier clean :)

im getting the Motax hugger as it covers much more of the wheel than the rest.
How is your french ? as their site is only in french and i wrote to them to ask if they have engish and i got a prompt reply of
" Non, monsieur, on ne parle que français "
use google translate and post in all the bits off the site , just so you dont end up with something you dont want , like frogs legs.
from memory there are only two options, a plain black hugger with fittings or a 99euro supplement to have it painted
viper, I e-mailed motax and they gave me a price plus shipping, unfortunately I can't get into yahoo mail at the moment to check what that price was !
Their site says fibregalss with stainless steel fittings
I agree with you that it seems to cover the rear wheel a bit more than the Skidmarx version, which is a goodun, as I had it on two different bikes and then sold it... DOH
BTW I've never tried frogs legs, they might be tasty ....or maybe not :-\
managed to get into my email now, here is the reply....

you can order on our website motaxpaypal.
thank you

glad you got soughted :) however I can't for the life of me see how the pic of the motax hugger in the pic you posted covers the rear wheel more than the skidmarx hugger :-\ or do I need to make an appointment at specsavers ;)
mmmmm ....maybe its me that needs specsavers :-\
To me the Motax variety appears to be 'closer' to the rear tyre and continues slightly further round the tyre, to a point past the centre when measured against the axle..or maybe I didn't get the Skidmarx hugger mounted correctly on my bike
to my eyes the motrax continues further round the wheel, the skidmarx appears to end right above the axle at the 12 oclock position , where as the motrax ends at the 2 oclock position

I see :) the first pic of the grey gtr is the skidmarx hugger, the 2nd pic of the black gtr is the motax hugger, if so I can now see the difference, and a gree is a lot better ;) when "olde coney" posted the pic of the hugger on the black gtr, it seemed he discribed it as being the motax hugger. all clear now ;)
if anyone gets this motax hugger, maybe put some pics up and any tips, like is it easier to take out the back wheel for instal :)

agreed it covers the rear more :) agree it even looks better! but it's still secured by the tourqe arm bolt so you would still need to remove the exhaust can or in the case of the standard exhaust the link pipe as well to remove the rear wheel. have not tried to remove the rear wheel yet, but I understand that the hugger will stop the rear wheel clearing the splines. still not a big thou, just a extra 15 mins work ;)
I reckon that the hugger will restrict rear wheel removal, in fact I seem to remember that when I had the PR2s fitted a few years ago that I had to make some adjustments for the tyre fitter, at the time I had the Skidmarx hugger installed
2Kwacks...sorry for the confusion I caused, you are right ... the link I posted in the first set of pictures was wrongly placed and is confusing DOH !,
However the Grey GTR pictured has a Motax hugger and my Black GTR (with the akropovic pipe) has a Skidmarx variety...I hope that clears it up ;)
I think I'll be getting the Motax hugger as its not badly priced and seems to be suitable for my needs.
The Skidmarx hugger does require you to remove the hugger as the wheel won't come off the splines until you do.
To remove the hugger you need to remove the silencer.
I have it down to a fine art now as have just done my 4th rear tyre change (one was done by the dealer @ 25k miles).
Not sure if the Motax one is wide enough to permit wheel removal.
If it is then it would be a better bet.

My bike has a hugger and I've never had to remove the exhaust or hugger to remove the wheel. I'll try and see if I can spot the brand.

glad you confirmed that :) I was just about to book another eye test ;)
I like the look of the Motax hugger but I can't understand the French website and there doesn't appear to be a link to an English language version.
Maybe I can buy from a distributor but not having much luck with Google - anyone have any suggestions.
Thanks
Max.

I cant find anyone selling the motax hugger apart from their own french site. The site did look a bit daunting at first , but basically there are two options. 150e buys you the hugger with fixings and an additional 99e buys it painted. Ive translated most of the site and its plain black in its stock form.
Its obvious which is " add to basket " and if you then see " Prix noir Brut " itemised and 12e carriage youve done it.
cut and paste the individual tabs from the site into google translate
the paypal bit is as per english. simples
Well I've ordered the Motax hugger - they charged 12 euro freight which doesn't seem right for freight to Australia when they charge the same to ship to the UK. ( I think )
Anyway I'll see what eventuates.

That shipping does seem cheap...maybe they thought you live in Austria ::)
It would be interesting to hear how you get on with shipping and fitting Max

You may be in for a long wait if they send it by boat, mate.
Just as well have stuck with the excelent Skidmarx one then. I have had screens fender extenders from them. All excellent products & delivery quick from Weymouth.
I don't have to remove it to do anything.

have you removed your rear wheel with-out removing the hugger? I've not tried yet, but been told the wheel will not clear the splines with the hugger on.
2 kwaks....No I dont remove it to remove back wheel & have had no problem what so ever. I am not the only one, but then heard some others have had problems. May be they just haven't got a big as a Hammer as me or been to the West country school of farm Mechanics like me.....!
Well I'm not holding out much hope of ever seeing the Motax hugger I've paid for. Been just over a month since I ordered and paid and absolutely zero communication from them - all emails
go unanswered.
I've lodged a dispute with PayPal so I'll see where that goes. Hope I do eventually get it, if not it looks like a Skidmarx might be the way to go.
Good luck with the dispute Max..
Good job you used Paypal, even though dealing with a dispute through them can be a bit long winded
I have just emailed motax in french and said i was looking to place several orders for huggers but was concerned that my friend in australia had not recieved his or had any response from emails, i also asked if anyone could speak to me on the phone in english, Lets see if they respond.
on another forum we dealt with a problem like this and all emailed them with a potentila order but had concerns ect ect.
Maybe if max gives us his name we can all be his friend for matax
Hi viper
I've sent you a PM with some details if you are able to communicate with them.
I think I sent the PM correctly - let me know if you don't get it.
Thanks for any help you can give
Regards
Max

Nice one. Result!
viper - that is absolutely brilliant, thanks for your help.
I really appreciate the effort you made to help out a total stranger.
Regards
Max.
Watch out now Max, cos he'll be camping in your garden demanding a full English fry for his breakfast :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
Nice one Viper, and a good result..
I do wonder when dealing with our Galic cousins if sometimes something is lost in translation..just a thought
Hooray .... my hugger finally arrived from Motax today
Package was battered around but the contents are all OK. I will post up my thoughts on fitting and wheel removal when I get some time off work to install it.
Funnily enough I have yet to receive a single piece of communication from Motax but at least I've got the hugger.
Nice one Max, and good news that the hugger arrived safely.
Pics of installation and your thoughts would be great
BTW I guess our French cousins would probably reply like this :mfr_lol:
"Nous, les Français font très attention à ne pas dépenser inutilement de l'argent sur les emballages coûteux. C'est ainsi que nous gardons le prix de nos produits compétitifs.
Profitez de votre hugger mon ami
merci "[/b]
Update on the Motax hugger - after further fiddling I have to say that contrary to my first impression I can remove the rear wheel with the hugger fitted but I'm damned if I can refit the wheel with the hugger in place  although logic says if the wheel comes off with the hugger in place it should go back on with the hugger in place.
The best I can do is leave the brackets in place and remove the little screws that hold the hugger to the brackets fit the wheel then refit the hugger to the brackets - but what a PITA - I'm really wondering if it's worth the hassle.
Whether other brands are similar I don't know but there is only limited space so I wouldn't be surprised if they are all a pretty tight fit as far as wheel removal / replacement goes.
Do you thnk that would be the case for all huggers or just the brand you have?
intresting thread guys,,,,,im looking for one now especially from my weekend run up to aberstwyth, loads of shite up under the rear this time
Max that's interesting ....if you look at page one of this thread you will see that the Motax higger is a closer fit than other options, which should mean that it will perform better
Fortunately removing the hugger in order to remove the rear wheel, shouldn't be a regular task
Why dont you search old posts about rear huggers...
lots been posted & written. Skid Marx pice piss to install.
Mine done long time ago.
Did some one ask did you need to remove panniers & if so how & could some one post some pictures.
You generally need to remove the exhaust but thats as complicated as it gets.
