Morning chaps.
Almost time for the big one. I know a few of you have gone through this one and hopefully remained solvent (although you may have sniffed some before you read the bill :-\ ) so could I wsked how much you wll paid?
I live in Bristol and my kawasaki dealer is brilliant and well worth a trip for a service and I am sure they will be amongst the cheapest.
I woud also like to know if any of you had to shell out for any other stuff that was found during this service.
Thanks chaps!
Thank you very much Pete you have just put me off my breakfast :'( Remortgage and service in the same breath is very upsetting for us old folk that are nearly on the state pension. My advise to you would be, book it in then when you return to pick it up just take a very deep breath then whilst grating your teeth pay the bill go outside climb on the bike and go on a very long ride. Then when you get home think well that ££££££££££££ was well spent what a great bike . :)
I think it's about 500 quid.
100 is spot on ... just take a deep breath and sign on the dotted line ... then out for a ride and enjoy your recently serviced dream machine :)

The only thing that'll roar is my missus when she sees the bank statement. . . .
I've been looking at another GTR today and trying to use the angle that the next service on my bike is the 24k one and it could be pricey. The wife simply said how much? I told her and she just said if it needs it, it needs it. :o I think she's upto something!!

mmmmm that's a crafty ploy
Maybe you could tell her that you "need" to change the GTR ;)
Mine was about £800 but I rolled the 24k and 26k services together and included a new front PR2 as well.
24k was valves and spark plugs, 26k was oil/filter/diff-oil/airfilter.
So yeah, I'd say around £500 for just the valves and sparkplugs.
Pete ... just use Tipex on your bank statement ... she'll never notice !!! ;D

What? They change iridium plugs that are supposed to last at least 80K miles not only @ 8K but also @ 24K miles?
OK, I guess when you have to check the valves changing the plugs won't take 4 hrs but that just doesn't make sense!

It's a good point. Not sure what beemer is like but the kwak is the best bike i have ever had. Given price differential and in life costs not sure i would bother. On the other hand a 1440 GTR . . drool dribble etc. would be great to see the kwak spank the BMW . . .
Spent a long time road testing the 1600GT and it IS phenomenal.
But it's also a big, technology brimmed potential money pit!
I loved it, but as an every day bike I would need to think long and hard.
Touring - brilliant, even more so then the GTR, but the GTR is a better all rounder.
To be fair Chris, treat yourself if it's something you really want. You only live once, so go for it. ;D

pound for pound you'de have to be better off with a new GTR wouldn't you ?
Winston ... you know what to do ..... have BOTH ! ;D Difficult, as you say, potentially a money pit BUT could you go on knowing it's out there and not have one in the garage, especially as YOU have ridden one and know what it's like !! Never mind hard times more like hard decisions !
lol - Having ridden them (quite angrily!) I do think they are brilliant. But they are big and for everyday use the GTR is better.
I am toying with the idea of a 1200 Adventure (as well as the GTR) and giving that a go for a season, then decide which way to go in 2013 - new Tourer or new Adventurer (Honda will have been out a year then)
New GTR? Nah, don't think so, love them to pieces, but I don't like the 'new' shape (2010 on) - too 'organic', I prefer the angular look of the earlier model. If I was going to do that I would do it in lieu of the upcoming 1/4 century service!
May just bank the dosh and wait until I really know what I want. Bear in mind I kept my Blackbird nearly 11 years - I am not a dedicated follower of fashion.
Parked up at the "bridge"a few weeks ago and one of the Bms parked by the side of the GTR and the Bm dwarfed it , they are one BIG bike. I do all my biking in the twisties, even when on holiday and I think a Bm would be a bit of a handfull. :)

No, that's where it will piss all over the GTR!
I chased the GTR on one with a tidy rider on it and it was only the twistyness that stopped the overtake.
They hide their mass well, but are physically big round town. Too big for CBT training.
They are awesome as a tourer where the GTR is far more sports biased.
Trust me, BMW really have got it right. Just BIG!
got quote of 550 all in for the service.
got quote of 800 quid excl Vat :o for the same service at a dealership in Reading.
I trust the bristol guys implicitly so i wonder what the other quote was about? perhaps it also included an overnight stay in a 5 star hotel and a hour's visit from miss whiplash ?

That's interesting, as I was was at the 'bridge'; about 5 weeks ago and a guy came wandering across to look at my bike.. we got talking, as you do, and it turned out that he already had a 1600 BMW and wasn't very happy about a number of 'issues' that it had experienced, mainly mechanical etc.,
He asked if he could sit on my GTR as he felt that it would be a bike with a 'heavy feel' to it, but he was amazed at how light and relatively small the bike was when compared to his Beemer. Of course I encouraged him to take a test ride on the GTR, which he said he would definitely do.
He said that he hadn't even considered the GTR as a possibilty when he purchased his BM, which I found a bit strange.
In between my second, and this, my third GTR I had a brief flirtation with BMW, firstly with a K1300 GT EE, which is a stunning bike with a great engine, (which is worth trying).... but even though this is a lovely bike its just a bit bland, the panniers are too small, plus the bike uses too much oil ! and when it mysteriously cut out on me one day and promply fell over, well, that was the straw that broke the camels back, so it was p/xd for a R1200GS, ::) the less said about which, the better :-[......the GS may be a capable bike but I hated it, so it went to a good home to make way for my latest GTR which I love ;D
I guess its one mans meat is another mans poison
I never even tried the 1600 when i was looking for a tourer and never will. I have fallen out with bmw and it'll take along time for us to kiss and make up. When I had my bmw f800st serviced by a local independent just before i sold it, the owner/mechanic (who used to be a service manager for bm) told me that basically consumers did all bm's testing and fault finding - i.e new models introduced before all niggles discovered and rectified. From what I hear (albeit, ancedotely) seems to be true of the k1600gt.
One of the many things that attracted me to the gtr was 'tried and tested' technology without being 'long in the tooth' like the pan or FJR.
Sorry for going off topic... as usual...
It's all interesting stuff .. members with different views and perceptions ... strange as you say Coney that the chap never thought of a GTR !! If you were going to spend a lot of money you would research the bikes first I would like to think ! For me now, the GTR is without doubt the best bike I have had in 30 yrs ... the VFR 800 came close ... but in a few years when I come to replace this I shall either go for the R1200 GSA or the K1600 ... ( the beauty that Winston rants about ;D ) ... it's all personal choice and I think with everything you will always hear horror stories about the bikes and the service from dealers .. but ... you pays your money .........

Sorry .. you are right of course .... when I get to the 24K service I shall update you ! :) :)
May book mine in for it next week - Gulp! Was quoted £350.00 but it is really close to PR3 time too.................Reckon I can add another £250.00 on to the quote!
Winston .... Save the PR3's for the K1600 !! Now that would be awesome ;D
Pete is correct, sidetracked or hijacked the initial post was about GTR servicing....mine aint due for a 'biggun' for quite some time...phew
Hope it wont be BMW prices tho' ;D

350 sounds very low for the amount of work required. 24k service includes valve timing which is a fairly big job , . Bigger if clearances need to be done. You may end up with a bit of a shock, . . Who provided the quote?
Just dug out the invoice for my 25K service (24+26=25) ;D
Labour £231.00
spark plugs x4 £8.38 £33.52
air filter £29.32
oil filter £7.19
drain bolt washer £0.32
oil (silkolene pro) £34.61
valve shims x7 £42.00
sundries £6.00
waste disposal £3.00
Parts Total £151.96
Nett £386.96
vat £67.72
Total £454.68
7 shims were out of spec?! That price is about right though
I'll be doing my own valve check at 50000 miles.

Robspeed of Grimsby. Just rung them to confirm and book in (no loan bike so won't be next week!) and they quoted £320.00 plus anything serviceable - shims/pads etc. Included plugs oil and filter
Picked mine up last night. Front and rear pads needed replacing in addition to service. No valve adjustment necessary.
5.98 all in. BOTH 24 and 26K services combined. A lot of money but the bike feels like new again. I am amazed at the variability in prices for this service. Labour rates will probably be one of reasons but this should not vary this much outside London.
You are correct about the Labour rate variation Pete, its amazing though just how much this will vary right across the country.
It's a reflection of dealers recovering costs which are the result of expensive outlay on facilities and equipment...plus its likely that they will charge what they feel they can 'get away with' ............or is that me being cynical ;D
I think it would be useful to forum members if this post was made a "sticky" as it is obviously in everyones interest to know what to expect from dealer servicing costs....just a thought :)
Good idea but perhaps better if a simple table was presented as the sticky showing mileage. Service type, price and any additional items repaired or replaced alongside where the service was done and whether it was gelt to be a quality service

If it helps, data from my first 21,000 miles:
4,000 mile service was free, negotiated at purchase time
8,000 mile service was £268.85, including spark plugs
12,000 mile service was £358.88, which included front brake pads at £154.46
16,000 mile service was £415.39, which included spark plugs, plus brake and clutch fluid bleed.
20,000 miles service was £152.82.
All servicing done at Bristol Kawasaki, whom I have been very happy with. I believe that oil and filter change is optional at the 4/12/20k services, but I have chosen to have it done each time.
If it helps, the rest of the costs over this period (bought new September 2010) are:
£600.07 for two sets of PR3s.
£72.50 for the second year's tax
£2,049.46 petrol (mine has averaged 51-ish mpg from new)
£5,500 estimated depreciation (paid £12k, think it is worth £6.5k realistically now)
Total of all this (excluding insurance, and extra gadgets) is £9,417, or 45p a mile. Ouch. That hurts when it is all written down together :mfr_lol:
Probably similar costs if I had spent the same money on some boring, diesel car however. I am sooooo glad I did not however.
As depreciation is more than the rest of it put together, I guess buying when it is a year old is the smart move.
Martin.
Now that is an accurate breakdown of costs...excelent
Bloody hell its a bit of a shocker when all costs are included though
[/b]
He hasn't added in the costs of his accessories yet :ninja:
Accessories wouldn't be service realted costs ...would they ?

Well just got back from the 25k service.
£443
8 shims needed doing.
Brake and coolant fluid replaced.
Oil/Air filter and plugs.
£90 in parts, rest labour.
Did service and when paying the service manager winked at me and laughed - "Have you seen the Kawasaki recommended service price?" quoting £550.00 to him he laughed and said "You got a bargain then Chris!!"
Recommend Robspeed to anyone.

4000 Miles Service - £140.14
(Tyres replaced as Pair at 6000 - PR2's hated them. - £234.00)
8000 Miles Service - £160.60
12000 Miles Service - £415.15 including rear. PR2.

16000 Mile Service - £120.12
(Tyres replaced as Pair at 18000 miles. Z8's - £272.01)
20000 Mile Service - £86.20
72.50 tax.
£2877.08 petrol (2275.28 Litres at av. £1.26 per litre, 40.20mpg). Too many short runs.
Ignoring purchase costs, gadgets, insurance im running at about 22p per mile.
Interesting comparison.... To much acceleration me thinks, linked with too many short hops... :-(
