Wifey's nephew is currently doing a degree in forensics and looking for a one year placement as part of his degree. He'd like to work with the Police forensics dept, so would you chaps know the procedure and/or any contact details? He's not bothered if its unpaid, just looking to get the experience.

Would need to contact whichever farce he preferred and speak to the relevant HR dept.
Some take volunteers, but in that field there may be issues due to nature of work and vetting/security.
Would very much be down to individual force and policies.
University careers officer should be able to assist with placements, but to be fair there is more chance in private sector in forensic labs, especially since the home office labs are now defunct.
I would have to say sadly that it would be a non starter ...( a friend of mines daughter asked the same recently )... certainly there are issues in relation to vetting not even thinking about procedures and drills for scene work ... SOCO ( Scenes of Crimes Officers ) are very different to the old days of fingerprints and boot prints .. as you have put on the thread "degree in forensics", which is needed these days just to get you on the application list ! I just can't see it my friend, too many issues ... there may be experience to be had with archaeology ... bones and dating etc if there is a year to be filled but not much more than that ... Absolutely no harm in contacting your local force or HQ as policies may vary from one place to the next but gone are the days of turning up for free and tagging along .... sorry. It's not my speciality as you know but I won't be far wrong :(
PS ... It's not often that I think of you whilst having T but..... a lot of SOCO work is farmed out to private companies who are approved by The Home Office for use by Police Forces ( sorry .. forgot.. Police SERVICE ) ! so it may be worth finding out from the HO or try Googling their details... those companies may be more willing to take on trainees in some capacity and thus give your nephew that much needed experience or as we call it a "heads up".... hope this helps my friend. :)

As I said................. ;)
And just to re-inforce the above this was the state of play at our nick last year.......

We currently have no SOCO at all at Halifax, many a time we are encouraged to photograph our own scenes for less serious matters.
Thanks for the responses. Maybe I should have added that he wants to do forensics as in Computer Security. I'll get him to approach the police HR dept.

A lot of them have been made redundant too. Times are tough!! ::)
A friend works for a private Computer Forensics company.
They mostly specialise in financial fraud investigation but get involved in all kinds of stuff.
I'll have a word if you think it may help.
They are always looking for good people so may help with his career too.
Boomer, that would be great. Anything that's related to IT and security.
Ok, I'll get back to ya when I hear back from her.
