Title: Tyre Pressure Sensors
Post by: Dive1082 on January 15, 2012, 05:33:10 PM
Hi all,

I have gotten the warning that my batteries in my tyre pressure sensors or low.  Does anyone know what type of batteries they take and am I right in assuming that the batteries are fixed inside the tyre on the sensor?

Many ta's and thanks you's... ???

Take it back to the dealer and get them replaced under warranty.

The cold weather normally gives the battery low message.

Are batteries covered by warranty?  I have until May till my warranty runs out.

Batteries should last 5 years. They aren't a replaceable item. Well, I not easily anyway

its a common problem and covered by warranty.

I'm getting the same warning first thing in the morning, problem is I'm just out of warranty. Is there a way of changing the batteries as the sensors are a ridiculous 200 quid each!!!

TBH, I think its more to do with the batteries being cold. When at the correct temp the issue goes away. I reckon the batteries actually have a lot more life left in them, but it is irritating.

If your bike was purchased in the UK you could phone up Kawasaki and maybe they would do a goodwill gesture. Its bad design not to have the batteries user replaceable. I'm sure there's some dyno principle that could be used to negate the need for batteries.

I have heard of a number of people who have done this, and there was a how-to guide on the net somewhere but I cannot find it quickly at the moment. It is a fairly easy DIY activity I believe.

It involved a fairly simple removal of a cover from the tyre pressure sensor, and a soldering iron as the battery is soldered in. But the battery itself is a standard size, and can be replaced.

Martin.

I assume because you need a soldering iron its a tab welded battery? Might not be too bad then.

I posted this on the other forum.
Dive has seen this but it's pretty interesting as there are some pics of the TPS opened up in the link to the COG forum.

You can replace the batteries yourself if you are any good at soldering.

You will need the tyre off the rim, unbolt the valve and TPS from the wheel.
Then undo the screw hidden under the label, prise the TPS unit apart, unsolder the battery and solder in the new one
I found these which are the right type and voltage and the tabs are similar;

Make sure that you get the polarity right.
Reassemble the TPS and bolt it back in.

This thread shows what it looks like inside (thanks to Fred Harmon)

This one is a discussion of how to fit a battery holder to allow easier future battery changes.

Only problem is that you still have to get the wheel and tyre off to change the battery, but I guess you could do it at the same time as you get yer tyres changed.

I haven't done mine yet but will be doing both later this year.
I will be getting the wheels powdercoated at the same time as the original finish has not appreciated exposure to 3 UK winters worth of salt & grit.

Im ok with a soldering Iron so I guess it would be prudent for me to change out the batteries when i next change my tyre, regardless  8)

How long are these batteries supposed to last for? I can't imagine mine have ever been changed and yet the bike will be 5 this year.  ???

Correction, you might be the first to do this procedure on my behalf, I couldn't use a soldering iron to save my life.  ;)

Fitted shiney new pr3's on friday and soldered in new batteries to the tps circuit boards. Rode out yesterday for about 80 miles in the (very) cold and no battery low warning, sensors working fine. The old batteries were still reading 2.8volts the new ones around 3.4volts. Sorted.
