Title: GoPro Fitting
Post by: Winston Smith on December 30, 2011, 08:33:52 PM
Mr Wolf - or any other GoPro Hero users.

Thanks to my good lady I am now the proud owner of said camera.

How have you fitted the camera to the beast?

I recall Steve you had yours mounted under the left mirror housing and the result was quite stable frames.

Can you assist?

You are a lucky man ! Mr Wolf will give you ALL the info you need. I and all others here look forward to seeing some of your footage ... I believe these Go Pros get better and better every year .. the quality is stunning ... let us know how you get on old fruit  ;D

Chris, usual rules apply. Make sure the underside of the mirror stem is squeaky clean and dry. Press one of the adhesive pads on and ideally leave for 24 hours before blatting around the roads of East or North Yorkshire. I used an additional cable tie as you can see on the photos, but in reality they were never needed. The camera mount never came off of its own accord put it can be pulled off if you want to remove it.

Alternatively stick the camera on your helmet for more realistic footage but this will provide slightly less stable footage due to the natural continued movement of the head.

Thanks Steve - your bike almost looks like one of the fast blue ones in those picture.

Rusty - I appear to be a lucky man don't I?!!

Over the last few Christmas's she has supplied me with a Garmin 660, Engage XL bag and an Omega Seamaster.

That's in addition to letting me go on the boys jolly's and the RiDE mag testing as well as a week in France every December driver training!

She's not a bad old stick!

I've used and still do use for some of my editing Pinnacle Studio HD which is about £35-£40 from PC World. It might be even cheaper at the moment as they have a sale on. Winston mentioned that you can use Windows Movie Maker too but you might need to be running Windows 7 for that as I am an Vista and my Windows Movie Maker wouldn't handle HD footage.

This is what I just purchased based on a recommendation; http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cyberlink-PowerDirector-10-Ultra-PC/dp/B005TGBOVY
Not tried it yet though, but from all the reviews I read its supposed to be very very good

Everyone raves about the GoPros, but I can't help think that a cylinder style camera, such as the Contours would be better from a mounting point of view (less surface area into the wind blast?).

I'd definitely like a helmet cam, so would be interested on views of both styles. Also - has anyone had any problems with cameras falling off your helmet? This would be a constant concern!

Post by: Lonewolf on January 03, 2012, 11:19:47 AM
I understand what you are saying re the bulk of the HD GoPro housing but trust me it is not a problem. The unit is stuck fast and from the footage I have obtained in the past while using this camera I have been very impressed.

You often see the HD GoPro used these days by the BBC and other TV companies in many different applications. If its good enough for them, it's good enough for me.  ;D

I use 3m Dura lock to mount my Lid cam, Dura lock is like Velco on streroids, i have tested this stuff at over 180mph (ahem on  a private track i may add) and it sticks the camera a treat.

i have a HD cylindrical type which is fookin superb!.. TBH taking long video clips of ya riding is rather boring, if the the Go Pro has the photo facility use that its the bollox. mine takes a shot
at 4mp every 2 seconds and i have documented all our trips with this, yes OK its a bit of a pain going through thousands of pics but it is worth it as i have some stunning shots.

Post by: Lonewolf on January 05, 2012, 10:02:00 AM
Yes the HD GoPro can do interval photos to create almost like a flip album if you want.

If your'e going to do some videos its sometimes better to keep them short and sweet or be ruthless when editing to get rid of the crap.

In addition to the new GoPro, I have one of these too which seems to be a pretty good piece of kit.

I got it through Groupon for about half price   :)

Try chilli technologies

Quote you were told about it from a groupon customer (mention my name Chris Hood) and see if they will apply the discount.

I did find them excellent from a customer service POV when I was ordering and waiting for delivery of mine (they had a massive backload on pre-order so it took a week or two longer to deliver due to the groupon deal!)

Perhaps we could have a thread where people post videos (and stills?) from their bike cameras, so we can compare? This one is marked GoPro Fitting, but I'm now waiting to see some footage of a Replay XD1080, so a new thread might be good!

I have recently bought a Go Pro Hero 2, and I am simply staggered what it can do for a mere £240. Magnificent bit of kit. The video below is me on a recent track day (car, not bike obviously), and what has impressed me most, is even in a ragtop with the roof down, the soundtrack is perfect.

Anyway, posting here because I need find a way to mount the camera on my race bike and am not convinced the sucker mount in the motorsports package is secure enough. I like MGvalerio's solutions, but I don't have the talent to knock mounts like that up.

Anyone know where to purchase bike specific mounts? They need to be secure, and stable up to 160mph too - not asking for much then  :mfr_lol:

This has probably all been covered but: The GoPR is great and the stick on baseplate brackets are superb; secure on most clean surfaces yet removable with a hair dryer.

I have one( baseplate) on the side of my  Arai Phil Read rep which requires an extension piece to get the camera level. Mostly however, I have it mounted on the headlight of the K12 which was approved by the MOT man. (Probably not the best place on the GTR)

I have a bracket stuck on the front of the car dash and have also stuck them to hire cars' and friend's dash boards because a few minutes with the hair dryer and they are removed without trace of residue.

It was sods law that I did not have it mounted on " Black Wednesday".   The extension piece for the Phil Read has gone walkabout, and I was out of sticky baseplate brackets. I usually don't go anywhere in car or on m'bike without it, though  mostly of course, I simply delete all because nothing of great interest has been captured.

For touring, the battery extension backpack and a 32Gig card are very useful.

By the bye, have you seen that London  bloke on u tube who seems to look for trouble with his GoPro and, every time, shouts "F..k yer mum" repeatedly at his antagonist.

Don't you sometimes feel ashamed when pratts let down the side. But that's probably been well covered here also.

I used my Hero 2 for the first time on a bike last week on a Donington Park trackday. You are right Nok, yet again the camera took astonishing footage and the adhesive baseplates were perfectly secure, even on the 145mph Dunlop straight.

I don't think I have nailed the mounting yet though, my videos (example below for anyone interested) were pretty shaky and this was mounted on the bottom of the windscreen, the most rigid part I could find. I think I need to triangulate the camera to a couple of other mounting points too. I'd be interested to hear if others have experienced, and overcome, the slight shakiness.

Anyway, off-topic, these GoPros are truly magnificent.

Braccio reggi GO-PRO troppo lungo, dal filmato si vede il braccio è composto in 2 pezzi, questo più essere la causa del tremolio lieve.

Se posti una foto del sostegno della GO-PRO posso sicuramente aiutarti.

GO PRO-holder arm too long, the movie you see the arm is made in 2 pieces, this most be the cause of the flickering light.

MGvalerio,

Thank you, I would appreciate your help. The pictures below show the mount I used. The third picture shows two brackets, I originally used the one on the left, but swapping to the one on the right makes things slightly better. Still quite shaky though, but of course this is a race bike with hard suspension.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to improve this?

I have a datalogger wired into the bike. This outputs all that sort of information, then I use an excellent application called Dashware to synchronise the logger output with the GoPro video and to create the dashboard/graphs etc.

The base does not horizontally but vertically, by eliminating the arm between the base and GO-PRO ... then put silicone removing the core group composed of female and male anchor the base of the GO-PRO.Il silicone even when it is dried easy to remove.

Another solution is to be made of this one, but chiselled mulling the male, however, see the movie.

..... did mount with suction cup arm removed, using the male attack the base with adhesive.
With aims to 5mm wood drill horizontally male base at the widest point which is almost half the male, then the hole must be made of threaded male base 6mm.la is then cut almost in half.
Be very careful to drill the male .. starting with the tip of 3mm.

MGValerio,

Grazie, che è molto utile. Alcune grandi idee lì.

@Nok, I use an application called Dashware - http://www.dashware.net/ - costs about £36 after the trial period, but is a truly magnificent piece of software. Only really worth getting if you have some datalogging data to synchronise with the video, Windows Live Movie Maker (standard Win7 program) works fine for editing etc.

@cpettifer, yes, I have tried helmet mounting though only a fairly simple experiment. Mounted like the photo below produces this video. This is in portrait rather than landscape, and the sound is not great, but I think with a little more experimentation, it could work.

The sticky pads really are brilliant, 125mph with sticky pad on headlight no problem.  Similarly with helmet.

Of course it's a personal "view" but I much prefer landscape although portrait does have a certain.........

I never had any issue with the sticky pads, suppose its un-natural to put that much faith in a piece of adhesive which is approx 2" square but providing the surface is clean initially it'll be fine.
