Title: fitting heated grips
Post by: jenros on December 29, 2011, 08:37:50 PM
hi guys,
looking for some help and advise please?,cuz i know you guys got it!,
well, santa`s brought me some heated grips-they are symtec, the one with a heated element that fits under the grips (just like a silver foil element, bought um off ebay, oops i meen santa did!) lol.
anyway, when i was looking into this, couldnt be doing with the oxford type with a huge square control box stuck on the bars/bike. My mate had a set of these on his track bike an said they were brill,so got these with a nice neat rocker switch which im gonna fit to the fairing panel.
Few people has said that if i wire um to the battery an i forget to turn um off,or even some knob head decides to turn them on when parked id be fooked with a flat battery!,,,,,,,,,so,,,,,,, is there a accessory fuse or possibly a lighting wire i can connect these to instead of the direct route to the battery??- only thinking this as it will only be possible to turn on when the ignition is on? am i right in  thinking this way or not???
Was going to have a look at fitting these today but thought fook that! it was to cold in the garage today!,,,,,,,,,,,,,, thanks for reading guys an look forward to hearin g from you all, hope you all have a fab new year, take it easy on the booze guys!!!
reguards the jenros family! :)

yes  left side when sitting on the bike.

I had my heated grips fitted by the dealer when i bought my bike (2009 model) but i told him about the power feed and he used it.

I'm sure that someone who knows better than me will be along shortly but i thinks the feed is tucked inside a  wide black sheath and very easy to get at.

Everything I've ever learnt about the GTR I've either learnt from Kwikasfuki or from dismantling the bike.  ;D

hi mate, well today decided to have a go at fitting my heated grips!(at last, just been to cold to be messing about in the garage),you said to take off the cover above the fairing (l/h side) did this but cant get the bloody popper button off, which is holding the top part of the cover on.
when i fitted the leds to the front i wired the leds from underside the panel at the front, managed to get my finger about these poppers to free um an take them out,but this bugger is right behind the windscreen riser,(i have a large aftermarket screen fitted to mine an looks like there is a sticky foam washer behind the screen an i think im gonna bugger the gasket up if i remove it?
what is the best way to get this released,or do i just damage the popper an replace it with a new one???,
theres prob a tool available to remove these, yeah?
lastly,,,lol- what colour is the live wire, know this sounds daft but,on my wiring diagram for the heated grips the white is live,an the red is earth!!!!!,,,bloody mental!!!!!!
thanks guys, but went out for a blast on a nice morning last week an my fingers were numb with the cold,so on they gorro go!!!.
cheers guys,an looks like spring is well on the go!!! about time too.

jenros, fear not.  :mfr_lol:

Firstly the little popper behind the screen is tricky to get to but you have to understand how they work. You can take the screen off if you wish and that will make the job significantly easier but you do not have to. The gasket on the screen behind the black plastic bracket is made of rubber/neoprene or similar, you wont damage it if you do decide to remove the screen. Be mindful though that the black plastic brackets are only made of PLASTIC, ifyou over tighten the four bolts holding this piece of trim in place they will develop tiny stress cracks, just tighten them ever so gently if you decide to remove the screen.

I've found the easiest way to remove the popper behind the screen is to use a small Allen key and use the short end to pop the pusher in. Yes that's right in order to remove the popper you push the middle part of the popper in this will then allow you to get your nail or something very thin under one edge and it will just lift out. When reversing this procedure the centre part of the pin will be protuding quite a way out, you simply push it down until it is flush with the head of the pin, after you have placed the pin in the hole. It''ll all make sense when you get it out, just have a play with it and see how it works.

As for the wires, on the bike, black + yellow is NEGATIVE and black is POSITIVE.

Hope that helps to some degree.

I dont know what they are specifically called but I have some spare ones, they are not a part which needs ordering in specially, any decent Kwak dealership will have them as they are as I understand it standard amongst the Kwak range. They only cost a few pence.

I've always called them plastic rivets or plastic push fasteners. If you use either term on ebay, you end up with hundreds to choose from.
I just think you have to measure the length and diameter to get the correct size, then decide on the style and colour.
I think Halfords suppy them too, but a lot more expensive than ebay.
