Hi All,
I am in the process of buying a Sat Nav for the GTR. Being recently let down after a purchase of a garmin zumo, which was returned i started looking at the Tom Tom.
Can i ask your views and suggestions for the best bike sat nav?
Thank you
Mark
I have a Zumo220 and it's excellent, not as big as the 660, and lacks MP3 and a couple of other goodies, but works perfectly for my needs. Plenty big enough to be seen clearly, good Bluetooth connection and has guided me perfectly on two trips abroad.
Friends of mine have the 660 but I can't really see the advantage apart from the screen size, but it is a lot more money. Had a 550 before, was stolen with my luggage, which was great but the 220 is just a little bit better, smaller unit and having its own speaker means you can use it in the car.
Had the first TomTom Rider and hated it, never worked properly and I couldn't plan routes as easily on the pc as I can with the Garmin, that is a really big benefit to me.
So Garmin Zumo 220 would be my recommendation.

What bracket do you have with the 220?
This is the one i am looking at with European maps.

I've got the Kawasaki bracket, not keen on the satnav on the bars, and the Kwak bracket puts it under the clocks which I like. Yup mine came with full euro maps, which have been used extensively ;)

... there is a previous thread on this that I started last year with lots of useful info in it ... I think in " Discussion " ... can someone create a quick link for this ??
I had a small and basic TT for the car which was excellent and never let me down but for the GTR I went for the Zumo 660 with a K bracket ... It is VERY good ... tried it out in France when I very first got it just for maps and following roads ... since then I have planned routes on the I Mac and loaded them on and played about with online stuff and I am very pleased with it ... waterproof, with a big biker friendly screen I can't fault it. I really think it comes down to personal choice ... I am sure there will be postings here of Garmin horror stories and TT's that broke down etc ... but anything that's electronic may go wrong ... at the end of the day I for one am very pleased with my 660 :) :)
Zumo 550 with K bracket. Bluetoothed to Schuberth SRC helmet intercom. Has been faultless. Think the Garmin and Tom Tom use different route planning software. The Garmin Mapsource software is good for planning routes and then uploading to the Zumo.
Everyone will have different opinions on the different satnav out there, ultimately it is a personal choice.
I've had a Zumo 550 now for over 3 years (it came with the 1250 Bandit GT and I kept it when I traded that in for the GTR) and so far it packed up on me twice. It just froze and just wouldn't react. I couldn't even turn it off. The first time disconnecting it from the bike fixed it, the second time it came right after the battery went flat. Otherwise it has worked really well and I'm pleased with it.
I tried creating routes on my laptop with Tyre but they don't seem to want to load because they contain to many way-points.
Rusty is this the thread you were refering to?

I will come back to you if im let down for a chat about yours however you may get another offer from someone on this site. Thank you
I started to look at the Tom Tom but there were too many negative comments on it so stuck with the Garmin.....

When it comes to route planning......especially for the TomTom ... google 'TYRE' (trace your route everywhere)...its a free piece of software that is designed for bikers...much much better than Garmin Mapsource or Basecamp...and fills the void for TomTom users like me. It uses google maps as its base package and from there you can convert to both Garmin and TomTom format....awesome, quick, intuative and up to date maps...bonus
You have to get to grips with it, which can be a little fiddly however stick with it, its worth the effort is route plannign is your thing, and once you know how to use it, its a doddle ;D
Mr Wolf ... yes that was the correct link ... I thank you :) :)
