Title: 90 degree valve stem
Post by: Kwikasfuki on December 17, 2011, 08:07:43 PM
If you permanently want a right angle valve steam, the makers of the Kawasaki TPS system (http://www.tire-watch.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=55&Itemid=115) offer one. You can buy them from mynetmoto.com (http://www.mynetmoto.com/motorradreifen_divers.cfm/ActiveTab/shopping/ActiveLink/2/Search/1/category/88/StartRow/0) for €20 plus VAT and shipping, making a total of €35.

Looks like the shipping is the same no matter the quantity, and there's a chance to save on VAT.

If there was a group buy, e.g. 10 units, it would work out as €26.5 + local shipping, so probably looking at £27 shipped (maybe £30 if we can't save on VAT).

Not sure if the 8.5 mm or 11.5 mm is the correct one yet.

Also not sure of the effect on wheel balancing, although I should imagine it should be OK.

Anyway, just trying to gauge interest at the moment.

Well if you can sort the size of an 11 model I would ave two.

I carry one of theses http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MOTORCYCLE-90-DEGREE-ANGLED-TYRE-VALVE-INFLATOR-/380386903922?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item5890d38772. would not leave it on permanent thou! most likely will upset the wheel balance. but it's there if required. when I'm touring really don't need it, I carry a mini air compressor with the screw on type valve connector with the flexible hose ;) can't really see the point in paying £25.00 plus for a permanent 90 degree angled valve stem when you can buy somethink that will allow easy excess to the valve when using the air line at a petrol station.

Aye, I've got one of those. And the Slime portable air compressor. And I still want the permanent right angle valve  ;D

It looks good but I'm a bit dubious about having a right angled valve fitted permanantly. A, it would affect the balance I believe and and B it could rip the valve out at speed because of the forces put on it.

I agree with Lonewolf, be very very careful if fitting these because the centrifugal force exerted on them is immense at high speed, and it will snap the valve stem off which would obviously lead to an instant deflation of the tyre.  By the time the tyre pressure warning system had told you anything, you would be sitting on your arse!

I would only use these as a tempory fit and inflate tool and keep them safely tucked away in the tool tray the rest of the time.

That's the term I was looking for, "the centrifugal force" but I couldn't think how to spell it I was that tired.  ;D

It is a theoritical issue but in reality I can't see it being a problem. According to Tire-Watch the whole assemble presumably including the sensor is only 27grams and has been tested to 500km/h so I can't imagine it would be problem.

I am actually surprised/disappointed that Kawasaki didn't fit 90deg valves in the first place - particularly as they are or were claiming it was the ultimate tourer.

Kind regards

Steve

Beg to differ, and maybe Kawasaki feel the same way!

The guys in the states have used these for a while without issues.

I still don't see the point.
Just one more piece of equipment that costs a lot of money, will only be used once in a blue moon and be nicked sooner than later. ::)

The stem goes into the tps. It's not an addon to the existing valve

you would have to put it on during a tyre change

The tp-what?

Tyre Pressure Sensor (http://www.tire-watch.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=55&Itemid=115).

That's interesting. I'd like to get a TPMS for the FJR.

Any idea how much? Edit: the answer appears to be ~£160.

£160? And Kawasaki charge ~£250 and that's just for the sensor.

I'll be ordering a valve anyhow. Anyone else wants one, let me know.

I've been talking to them today via email to try to order a kit for the FJR. Unfortunately they'll only take an IBAN transfer which is the standard MO on the big island off our shores but not so easy from the UK. It appears the German distributor takes PayPal so I may order from them.

Iv'e seen (aftermarket) 90 deg valves before and the ones I saw ALWAYS said....'remove before riding' there MUST be a reason for that..

yep! most likely will upset the wheel balance/centrifugal force. and will make your bike look butt ugly, unless the valve extension is coloured coded "magnesium grey" ;D have got a 90 degree valve extension. but only use for easy excess to the valve if I need to use the petrol station air line ;)

I would imagine that's because they only screw on to the valve externally and are likely to come off.

Kevin

If it did start to come lose it is likely to let air out of the tyre

This one looks like a solid one piece valve that acts as a replacement and not a valve that you attach to your existing valve.

I agree.

The German distributor takes PayPal BTW as I ordered the TPMS for the FJR from them a couple of days ago.

The Kawasaki size is 11.5mm. I can also get them VAT free.

Anyone else want some let me know. So far it looks like BigAlan and myself that will be purchasing these.
