Title: Wobbly Top Box Fixed with Motech Rear Rack
Post by: mark on November 23, 2011, 05:16:16 PM
Hi All,

Ive previously posted a remark about my wobbly back box and read with interest another member who had purchased a Motech SW Alu Rear Rack which is a direct replacement for the standard GTR 1400 rear rack. I took their advice and purchased the Sw Motech rear rack plus the Motech fitting plate for a Givi Monokey Box.

I checked out the website http://www.biker-discount.co.uk
On the left hand side of the website is a search box, put in GTR 1400 and it brings up the info on the rear rack and separate adaptor plate is also on the site. I spoke to the boss, sorry cant remember his name, and said i got the info from the GTR forum and he offered discount straight away. I got the new rear rack plus the Monokey adaptor plate all in including postage for £100 and received the items within 48 hours. Great service so I thought i would post this for other members who are having the same wobbly top box problem.

The telephone number to call is 01695 727752 if you prefer to buy over phone.

Thanks again and hope this helps (ive attached a photo so hope it uploads)

Mark

Hi Majaem
It was probably my post you read, so I can second that. Can't remember where I got it from but it solves any insecurity or instability problems plus gives you a wide choice of boxes to fit, including the Kawasaki box which is Givi monolock. Kappa boxes will fit Givi plates and are the same quality but generally slightly cheaper, so worth a look.

I'm not the most mechanically minded, so any idiot proof advice would be much appreciated.

Having bought a givi monokey top box off e-bay I then purchased a GTR specific fitting plate, etc... But when I came to fit the plate today, and having finally figured out the fitting instructions, I was reluctant to take the plastic panels off, and attach what I think are ugly C shaped brackets to the bike as suggested. Also, it tells me to drill some bigger holes. The bracket holding the rear lighting unit also appears to need drilling. The comments on here suggest the standard plastic plate is not up to the job.  Will the C brackets resolve this or is the best bet a further purchase of a metal plate.

Any help will be much appreciated and hopefully stop me losing my marbles.

I originally had the givi universal plate which attached to the gtr plastic rear rack. The givi plate fixed with universal nuts, bolts and c and s shaped brackets which you had to wangle under the standard rack. Although I got it to bolt down the flex in the standard plate mixed with universal fittings not specifically for the job means the rear box bounced about like a trampoline.

The motech plate is a direct swap for the standard gtr rack and you can get a motech fitting specifically for your back box which attaches directly to the motech plate. They are all designed to fit together perfectly with three bolts.

Much stronger and as they are designed to fit together no wobble for the box and no drilling or alteration needed.

Hope this helps

Just get yourself a Givi Monolock box and you won't have any of those problems.
The Monokey boxes are as their name implies SIMPLY cheap and nasty. :(
And once you fork out even more money for a decent base they'll cost even more than a good Monolock box which comes with an aluminium base plate.

Sorry to disagree with the last remark but the Monokey boxes are the superior boxes to the monolock cases. I have the Givi Maxia 3 monokey E55 and with the motech plate and monokey attachment is now solid on the back of the GTR. Although like all issues its my humble opinion only.

The quotes below are from the Givi website.

"The MonoKey series are actually the top of the line series with a more substantial mount, more features, and better quality construction. MonoKey mounts are sold separately. The MonoLock cases are generally smaller and lighter top case with a smaller mount and lock up.You should consider MonoLock cases for "light duty" applications. MonoLock cases are sold with a universal mount.

Monolock cases are single skinned and of lightweight construction so they are for perfect use on scooters and small mororcycle but they are not suitable for high speed use."

Majaem - cheers for that. Guess I'm a tight arse and didn't want to spend any more money; but you get what you pay for generally and I'd rather it worked with no worries.

Mecki- The reason I got the monokey is that I thought it was the better option. I had looked at the monolock cases but they are the ones that appear smaller and flimsy.

Well, I seem to have it gotten wrong again.
So what you are saying is that the other kind is not much better than the re-branded Simply crap ones Kawasaki are selling for the GTR?
Well damn me - I never had any problems with the top box on my 1250 Bandit GT, which was a re-branded 42l Givi Mono-whatever - the one with the fixing points underneath and the slots at the front.
I guess it was a Monokey then.
A nice stable steel base and wobbled only whenever one of the 4 rubber feet broke off.

Did I tell you I bought a new top box for the GTR off ebay which cost me the grand total of £5. Oh yes I think I did.  ;D  Its still solid as a rock. Sometimes cheap is good.  ;)

I was bidding on an E-bay top box which, with postage added, went for more than a new one.  The worlds gone mad! I guess people get caught up in the thrill of the bidding.  I paid £65 for mine which I thought was ok so £5 is a belter.
