General Discussion / ZZRGT
February 26, 2020, 04:37:13 PM
Having sold the GTR and replaced with a ZZR14 PS, I realise now how much more power could be available to the GTR
So, I was wondering about getting a sad old GTR and fitting a Gen1 ZZR cylinder head, injectors etc.  There's going to be issues with the cam chain etc, but its probably the same bottom  end so might not be insurmountable.
COULD end up with a super tourer with 190 ponies.  That'd be fun and would surprise a few riders.

Whaddya reckon?

General Discussion / Fresh fields
December 21, 2019, 01:42:48 PM
Well, after 7 years, 3 GTRs and 35000 on them, the last one is going in a couple of weeks.  I've been offered a 2016 zzr2400 performance sport with just 6000 miles on it and a trade-in value greater than what I paid for the bike 15 months ago.

If I don't get on with it, I reckon I'll still be able to sell it within a year and not lose money.

Managed to get a service, MOT, rack, topbox, centre stand and new akras, seat and heel plates as the original owner wants to move his existing ones onto a brand new zzr.  Thank you very much!

So, I've spent the morning pulling off the TomTom mount, the R&G crash bars and the rear footrest lowering kit.  Selling these seperately to help lower costs.  Oh, and a pair of panniers in MMS blue complete with keys and inner bags!

It's not without a big slice of regret that I do this.  The GTR has been a wonderful machine for me and I've been all over Europe on them

But, hey ho, onwards and upwards...

Accessories, Farkels and Mods / GTR fork seal tool
October 16, 2019, 08:47:46 PM
Coming back from Arnhem recently we noticed that one fork leg was decidedly oily as a fork seal was leaking. Not experienced this on a GTR before in 35000 miles.  Upside down forks are harder to dissemble than RWU forks and not a job I would do, so some unexpected expense due.

Before committing the bike to the garage, I thought I'd just try one of those internet/YouTube tricks an so I bought a Seal Buddy.

Essentially a slim piece of plastic that you insinuate up the fork leg, into the seal and move it around in the hope of reseating the seal. At £5 or so, I thought it worth a go.

Well, knock me down with a feather; it works!  Done 80 miles so far and the fork leg has stayed clean and dry.  How long this lasts is anyone's guess, but happy bunny so far

This weekend it's the remembrance of Market Garden in Holland.  Got a trip planned with a good mate, Mark, (ZZR1400) who's dad was one of the Polish paratroopers who went in , in sept 1944.  Also going with my son Pete on his one-handed Aprilia.

There's lots of events going on, and we plan staying at Ypres on the way back to have a look around there and at Pachendale.

Off at sparrow fart tomorrow to get the tunnel train at 1000 and back next Tuesday.  Should be lots of photo opportunities...

Just completed a 1500 miles trip around southern ireland.  Fantastic place to take a touring bike.  Road s are good mainly, although a bit sketchy on some of the minor roads.  Fuel is cheaper than UK and accommodation about the same.

Just remember that you dopn't go to Ireland for the sunshine!.  It rained for 8 days out of 10, so the bikes got a bit of a pasting.  strangely, I dont suppose we say more that 30 other bikes all the time we were there.  The natives were very friendly and loved seeing the big bikes ( my GTR, 2 ZZR14s and an Sx1000)

Staying in a mix of hotels and AirB&B, I guess the whole thing cost about £1000 including ferries, so not bad value

Worth going!

General Discussion / Rear hub temperature
May 16, 2019, 07:48:57 PM
Just completed greasing the drive shaft splines and took the bike for a shakedown spin, about 20 miles.  No issues ,so pleased with that, but when I got back I noticed the rear hub was quite warm.  In 7 years of ownership, I can't remember ever checking the temperature of the hub before.

Can anyone else let me know whether this is normal.  It wasn't "hot" but quite noticeably warm.  Thanks in advance!

Yes, the bevel box oil is up to the correct level.

General Discussion / Death and re-birth of a GTR
November 01, 2018, 06:56:09 PM
Well, my old trusty 2013 is no more.
A month ago it got shortened when the car in front of me did an emergency stop to avoid a pheasant on an otherwise deserted dual carriageway.  I did try to imitate the pheasant when I went over the bars and screen, but sadly made a bit of a poor landing.  The staff in Frimley hospital are very nice as were the ambulance crew...

There is case law suggesting that I was not at fault, but the insureres won't listen.  If you rear-end someone its your fault.  End of.

At the end of the day, I've got fully comprehensive insurance, a protected NCB and my excess is also insured, so even if its my fault I won't be out of pocket substantially. The bike had just turned 27000 miles, so considered higher mileage that some would like.  The bike was recovered to a local pound and a couple of days later they kindly let me remove the satnav, topbox and panniers.  I just didn't trust that they would remain on the bike for any length of time.  I also insisted that repairs/estimate be done by my local dealer, who picked it up a few days later

The dealers are good to me and once I was up and about they let me spend a couiple of hours there with my spanners removing all the bits that are worth money to me, but would not alter the writeoff value.  So, off with the satnav mount, radiator guard, topbox plate, R&G crashbars, footrest lowers and the Beowulf exhaust.  I had the original one in the roof at home.  God, its heavy refitting that by noneself

It soon became apparent that it was a writeoff.  Parts alone came tp obver £6000 and the loss adjuster confirmed this a few days ago.  We settled on a value of £7000 which I think is very fair. The bike has been collected by a breaker and I hope to get a cheque within a few days

On a brighter note, I've already bought a dark green 2012 GTR with just 10000 miles on it.  Its been neglected for a while and has lived outside without a cover for some months.  Got it cheap, with an MoT and I've spend several hundred £s on new parts to bring it up to the standard I want.  new mirrors, infill panels, switchgear and loads of screws, bolts and rivets.  It now looks as good as gold.  insured and taxed today and 50 miles of fun this afternoon!

Accessories, Farkels and Mods / Momentary push switch
February 23, 2016, 07:00:48 PM
I'm after a bit of help, please guys.

I'm converting an Aprilia to right hand only operation.  My nipper had a bad crash a year ago but now want to try to get back on 2 wheels, but has no function in his left arm or hand.

I have managed to get all the wiring across from the left except for the indicator cancelling switch.  What I'm looking for is a small, normally open, momentary switch that I can fit onto the existing switchgear on the right hand side.  Someting the size of a round horn button

I seem to remember someone here managed to fit something like this to the left side switch cluster, but I can't find that thread.

Nipper would be SOOOO grateful

Off on Tuesday to the Catalunya GP.  First long trip on this GTR so looking forward to seeing its performance

Crossing the water on Tuesday night, then Wednesday and t=Thursday in France, staing latterly at Millau, then over the hills to Barca on Friday.

GP playtime on Saturday and Sunday and then off to Andorra, and France on Monday to get the boat home on Wednesday

A good group  on 11 going from Kawasaki Riders Club, so, apart from the GTR there are 5(!) ZX10Rs. a z1000sx, a Z750 naked, a Beemer 1200GS, an FJR1300 and an R6.  Apart from one, we have all ridden together on the continent, so I expect to have a cracking time

Introductions / Newbie in The New Forest
February 12, 2013, 08:15:09 PM
Thought I'd better say "Hi" as I've just bought a 2007 GTR.  Scrolling through the posts it seems that I have the usual problems to contend with such as TPS batteries and slightly warped discs.  No real worries.  All fixable

This is the 13th Kawasaki in the Burchy household over the last few years, so I'm well versed in Big K engineering.  Have to say the 14 seems well made and certainly better than previous models I've had.

Previous tourer is/was a ZRX1200S that I picked up 18 months ago with only 12K on the clock.  Immaculate condition and has never missed a beat.  Went to the MotoGP at Mugello on it last July.  Had ZRXs for about 6 years so time to  move on...

Anyone want to buy a good 1200?
