since getting my bike i have noticed a few black smears on the nearside of the back wheel, thinking it was just brake dust ,but after coming in to-dayafter a ride looked again and it looked like it could be oil, cleaned it and checked the shaft drive i noticed that there was a smear of oil on the 12 mm bolt underneath the end of the shaft drive ,checked it was tight ,scared to try and tighten it anymore incase it srtipped the casting of the shaft drive drum.only done 2600 miles and just been serviced recently.anyone had the same leak or have you noticed it,(best have a quick look!!!)will have ta trip up to the dealers next week to see what they say.

I had the main oil seal replaced inside the rear hub, because it started leaking, the oil was coming out between the wheel and the rear hub, and spraying onto the wheel rim and tyre. This was done under warranty at 14,000 miles.

had my bike into m&s newcastle yesterday to look at what i thought was an oil leak, dripping onto my back wheel ,they found there was too much oil in the shaft drive.they set it to the correct level, done 100 mile to-day seems fine .i was expecting oil seals, they never charged for this and said if i have any problems just ring, very helpful ,great service,i only popped in on spec at 2.30,left the bike and picked it back up at 5.00

glad you got that soughted, but am confused here! how can you overfill the shaft drive? it says in the manual fil to thread bike on full stand, "bike standing level" approx 150ml. if its filled to the thread, then the oil starts to seep out through the thread, hence" how was there to much oil?

I had the same diagnosis (too much oil in the shaft) made by a dealer when I had oil spraying on the back wheel on my BMW R100R.
I thought, 'how can there be too much oil in the shaft if I never filled any in?'
Sure enough on the way home it started leaking again.
To cut a long story short, it turned out that is was a seal between the gearbox and the shaft that caused gearbox oil flooding the shaft.
Since the BMW gearbox had it's own oil supply separate from the engine oil I ended up with a dry gearbox.
And you can imagine what that did to the cogs inside.
Would have cost me an arm and a leg to have that fixed if the guy in an independent workshop hadn't found a second hand gearbox.

You have a point there.
Like Keith I found the service guys at M&S in Newcastle quite knowledgeable and helpful and feel that I am in good hands there.
They serviced my Bandit for the last 3 years and now they look after my GTR too.
Well, no coffee or loan bikes but if you have a small problem they fix it on the spot and usually don't charge you for it.

keith, just a thought. the last time you had your shaft oil change, was the crush washer replaced for a new one, if the same washer was re-used its possible it was leaking slightly from the drain plug. I allways replaced the crush washers on both the engine oil and shaft oil drain plug.

Hey which Bandit did you have...I had 600 some years back as was economizing with Wife & Kids etc...loved it. Wish had kept it as will become a classic for sure.

Got to agree about shaft oil , all done that , over filled.

1250 GT - thought it was a great bike - until I rode a GTR.  :'(
Still when it comes to grunt low down ( < 6000rpm) the 1250 Bandit will beat the GTR hands down. :-[

have never had a bandit so can not comment on that! however did have the zrx1200s which I would say where of simular power, and that did not hang around, but there again neither dose the gtr.

2 totally different bikes.
You may be right if you compare the ZRX with the 1200 Bandit but the 1250 is in a league of it's own.

That is the only one thing with the GTR...even my FJR had hell of lot more lower down & would short shift 3 or 4th like a Jumbo jet...did,nt like corners much though..pegs always scraping tarmac.
