Bit of a strange one this for a bike forum but with the Swallow Falls meet now only 6 days away I was wondering of those who are camping, (proper men)  8)  do you use an air bed of some description and if so whch one? I bought one from a local caravan place yesterday but dont like it, its too heavy and cumbersome.  I've seen some that self inflate which is a good idea.

Remember I haven't been camping for almost 30 yrs, secretly I prefer hotels, but I would never admit that to anyone.  ;D

Air bed? You're giving us northerners a bad name!

LW on our pre Swallow Falls camp out we used a double air bed. It was comfortable enough but every time that myself or Kath moved the other was bounced into the fly sheet. Much research and talking to people and suggestion was to use one of these. http://www.millets.co.uk/camping/sleeping-equipment/product/095617/multimat-camper-compact-mat.html?attribute=3706136

Mate who is an ex squaddie says that he used something similar when in the service. Hopefully they will suffice and roll up into a small stuff sack and take up less room than an airbed in the topbox too.

Pembstgtr, Millets to the rescue!!
I took your advice and popped down to the branch in Bradford and discovered they have a sale on, almost giving away their 2009 range of airbeds they were. I ended up with a multimat self inflating sleeping mattress, a camper 25 which was reduced from £35.99 to £18.99. Best bit is it folds up extremely small & only weighs 1035g.

Cushty....as they say down in London.  ;D

Thermarest every time .........

Lonewolf

Rusty, I've bought one now, I looked at some Vango ones but I couldn't justify the price. We're not all earning double bubble as you are at the moment!!!
If the Met goes under it'll be down to Rusty!! ;D
I always have my goose down sleeping bag to keep me snug and warm.

Rusty

Goose feathers are the best, but still " heavy and bulky " ! I think you can still pick them up from Army surplus stores that date back a few years but if you have one Mr Wolf then for Gods' sake hang on to it ...
They are amazingly warm.
Thermarest ? Expensive ? I know what you mean ... even I took a sharp intake of breath when I saw the price but used it for a week in France  ( and a couple of times at work on the locker room floor ) and its luvvvvly and soft  ;D ;D ;D

pembsgtr

Taking your thermarest to work? Now that sounds like my kind of career  :D

Rusty, the sleeping bag weighs only 700 grams and compresses down very small as its in something called a stuffsack. I'm not sure how 700gms compares with other sleeping bags but I think its very light.

Kawdolph

I bought the double flock mattress in halfords ,a bit bulky but fits in the topbox nicley with a bit of spare room, for those that buy the inflatable mattress remember to buy a pump and not a foot pump if its a double mattress will take a little while to pump up with foot pump.

Air bed !!!!!!! Are you a man or a mouse :-[If you were a proper man you would need no more than a sleeping bag and a flat piece of the earths crust :'( to rest your weary body upon ::) ;D ;pull yourself together and man up :( ;D ;D ;D   ;)
What would you rather be   or a wasp?
