TRIGGERHAPPY

Put on the kawa original tall screen friday.Did a long trip today in various weather.Nice trip, but where a little let down by the screen.
With the screen fully rised I got some buffeting and noise.Little over half way the buffeting stopped and
the noise in the helmet got much better
With the original "low" screen fully rised I got a steady air stream to the helmet. No buffeting and the noise are ok.
The trip to day took 7 hours 373 miles, lots of time to think about why the tall screen didn't do the job better.

I think the main problem are that the tall screen  have a little flip up. And the problem are getting worse when the screen raises
and tilts forward away from the driver.
Have never understod why the screens have to tilt forward when they get raised. It's the same on the fjr's and st1300.
I'm shure if the screens have had the same shape as the original but higher and maybe wider and it raised with the same angle as in low position all the way up,lot's of the screen problems have been solved.

Have anyone some thoughts about my theory?

The puig tall screen seems to be like the original but taller
And so does the calsci sreens.

Tried a ermax flip up screen on my fj1100 for 20 years ago,my head almost fell of from the buffeting it made.
Changed the original on my gxsr1000 to a double bubble type screen, wind on the helmet yes but no buffeting
regardless of the speed.

Not really fair to compare an adjustable ST screen with a fixed sports bike "screen".

The ST screen is trying to be 2 things and usually fails at both.
The stock screen is fine if you prefer the sports side of the bike.
For the Touring side you need a touring screen.

Mine is 15cm taller than the stock 2008 screen and is a little too short for me.
If I hunch down I can get out of the turbulence and have a nice quiet ride.
With the screen down the wind hits me in the chest but is mostly smooth around my head.

You need to decide what you are going to do with the bike and then fit an appropriate screen.

Maybe I want the best of both worlds, and that may be hard to get. But driving the GTR are a bit of both worlds.                                          One minute a super touring maschine eating miles easy and relaxing, next minute you grind your pegs down your favorite back road.
And beeing tall like you,6 feet 4 inch,I think it's more difficult to find a cure this screen issues.
Are going to try a few more screens,I may get lucky and find the "perfect" screen.
It's not the end of the world if i don't get a perfect screen.I always use earplugs and comeing from years of riding R bikes,
the GTR provides much better wind and weather protection anyway.
Can always go back to the stock screen,at least it don't create buffeting.

What screen are you useing boomer?

Well i am 6' 3" and pick up my new GTR on Sep 1st, i shall be interested to see what the standard screen does for me, and indeed if i need to spalsh more cash on a taller one.

One thing, when its piddling down can you still see easy enough through a tall screen?

Ducati owner now but I used to have a Black one, the fastest version.
Previous, Sprint ST (2), VFR 800, Fireblade's (4) SP1, VTR1000, GPZ900, CB250, BSA Bantam D14/4, Suzuki TS100, SX200.

Sometimes it's good to be small ;D

Having spent my last trip on a BMW GS with an adventure screen, the flexibility of the GTR std screen is wonderfull, pop it down when its warm to get some air, then ease it up on the motorway till the wind pressure drops.

If you want bufferting, try a GS with a vario screen.... i nearly got travel sick from the bufferting!! :(
She is like the Bumblebee, she should not fly....... and yet she does!

I have a CalSci XL (+6" over 2008 std screen) which is a mite too short for me.
When up if I hunch a little I am completely out of the wind.
When down the win hits me about mid chest and is smooth around my head, but noisy.

The new CalSci XL (+7.5" over 2008 std) would be ideal for me for touring.

My ideal would be the stock screen when I am in twisties mode and +7.5" when on the motorway.
Yer not gonna get 7.5" of travel from an adjustable screen.  :(

With my screen full up I look about 2-3" over the top of the screen.
Even with the +7.5" I would be looking over the screen.
You do not want a screen where you have to look through it!  :o

I also have the hand-wind deflectors which are a MUST if you ride in the rain with the screen up, at least on a 2008 model.

Will use the tall kawa screen for now. Going to get hand deflectors, and lower the pegs a bit. Got long legs so my hips are a bit cramped.
But if you get the XL screen and decide to sell the L screen let me know. I'll buy it.

Don't want a screen to se through, tried a Goldwing and I did not see anything in the rain. Bloody dangerous.                                                Didn't like the rest of the bike either. No feedback from the steering.
