Thanks for all the input everyone.  I do indeed have the EBC Pro Lite XC discs with the patented square bobbin.  So, how did things pan out?  Well, I stripped all ten brake pads out, cleaned everything up, checked over the calipers and reassembled with a little copper-ease.  Then I did a complete brake fluid change and bled everything up.
Err, what a difference!  They are definitely working now.  The old brake fluid looked really clean but there is a huge improvement to the feel with new.
