Took the plunge and purchased a 590 LM, so now it need s fitting to the  bike...........any ideas I might have had about it snapping into the existing Zumo 660 cradle have been squashed....unsurprisingly it doesn't fit.............. I kinda suspected it wouldn't

An initial play with the device last night tells me that this is a massive improvement, but as yet I've not put it to the test on the bike

I'll report back when its installed and tested

I have the 390LM myself. Get ready for some "interesting" route choices when you ask it to get you from A to B in a foreign country! :mfr_lol:

Cheers

Paul thanks, I have experienced exactly that whilst touring in Belgium,  my Zumo 660 took us down the main routes into Bruges  and through a farm yard, LITERALLY,  on the return journey., and, yes, there were chickens on the track  :mfr_lol:

Had similar experiences with the 660 when travelling down to sorrento and back whenever I didn't use the planned route. Lost count how many farm tracks I went down in France. When you change to car mode it definitely  looks for major roads rather than minor ones in bike mode. Maybe it's a little like a poor man's version of the curvy roads option on some other sat nav models? I quite enjoyed the variation and the adventure! Only changed to car mode when I needed to get a shift on.... or fed up with the smell of cow sh#t lol

That does seem to be the cure; tell it you're in a car. I set out to do an A-road (equivalent) in the mountains in Portugal which itself was a wonderful twisty. Good old Garmin decided to tell me to take every side track it could find and actually wanted me to cross said A-road to do some more side tracks... That's about when I told it I was a car.

I think the Garmin "bike" algorithm was written by guys who go green-laning at weekends...

finished fitting my new 590 yesterday and had a 100 mile ride out this morning, the screen is clear and offers pkenty adjustment for different light levels, I'm still familiarising myself with all the settings but they do seem very intuitive

The instructions are clear, and coincidentally I received a telephone call whilst on my way home and the screen message made handling the call dead easy.

I haven't had chance to put the route planning/directions to the test as yet, apart from using the 'home' facility and it brought me to my front door

So far so good
