I have a problem!

Started the GTR and very quickly had smoke coming out from the top side of the engine. turned off backed into garage and stripped all the fairing, searched everything and no melted wiring that i could see so bit the bullet and started her back up ran and nothing for about 30 second, then a small amount of smoke again, smelt like burning plastic although i dont have the best sense of smell, couldn't see anything or where it came from but think on the left side somewhere. Smoke stopped and nothing despite running for 10 mins. I have since put the bike back together and been out for a couple of hours.

Any ideas? is there a common fault which would cause this?

On the up side my glove box springs now work fine

Hi

Could be an oil leak from the rocker cover gasket, I was told a few years ago - the gasket is fairly narrow and may have a tendency to fail.

this may have put a small droplet of oil on the headers that burnt off.  but hey - its stopped now!  :-)

:agree:  especially as the smoke seems to be  disappearing once the bike has warmed up/expanded

My old Venom used to be a bit like that, bloody annoying thing it was too

Thanks for the tips. I guess next weekend will be another strip down to check for any oils sitting where it shouldn't be.

Changed the o ring on the cam sensor today, bit fiddly but got it done and had a new o ring in my o ring kit that seemed to be a perfect fit.

I am a bit concerned tho as the oil is also higher than the sensor so could be a problem with the gasket  decided to clean it up and give it some time and see what happens.

Brake pads all changed aswell so need a ride to bed them in tomorrow  :biker3:

How's it going on with time? Mines started occasionally smoking like a good 'un on first start up from the headstock / tank area, started after the "complimentary" service by DK,  - not going back there,
Has to be oil as it clears after 20 / 30 seconds, just not every time that gets me - guessing it's just how the oil pools / seeps out?
Are seals accessible with tank off or is it a complete fairing off as well?
Any feedback appreciated!

I removed all the fairings and dropped the radiator of its brackets, this gave me just enough room to remove the sensor and have a good clean up. its tight and very fiddly to get it all back together but ultimately quicker than a full drain down and removal of the radiator.

No further problems so hoping ive solved it.

good news....lets hope its fixed now

So it appears my replacing the cam sensor O ring with one from my (cheap) box of o rings has failed and today had the smokey start up again

Ordered a new one from the dealer, yes a proper one this time at the huge cost of £1 so leasson of the day is don't be a tight arse!!

On a positive by the time ive finished i will be able to remove the fairings blindfolded with one arm tied behind my back
