A strange thing happened today, I set off from home and hadn't got more than a hundred yards when my oil warning light came on and stayed on and shut the engine down. The whole thing happened in about ten seconds. I turned the ignition off and then restarted the GTR which fired up first time.  I took the bike for a ride for about an hour and the warning light didnt come on again, nor has it ever come on in the past.

I know there is plenty of oil in the GTR but the manual says the oil pressure warning light will come on whenever the oil pressure is dangerously low. Now possibly totally unconnected I hosed the bike down yesterday so whether I got some water on a  sensor or something I have totally no idea.

Again the manual says if the oil pump does not function properly or oil passages are clogged the oil pressure warning light will come on. If they stay on while the engine is running above idle speed stop the engine immediately and find the cause, but in my case the engine just died.

Totally clueless, but I dont need major grief 4 days before I go on my trip.  ;D

Hmm. I'd be concerned about this. It could indicate oil pump failure.
I've had experience on a car where it would come on intermittently and go off. Eventually one day it stayed on and the engine seized.

I could be totally wrong, and it could be a one off. Might just be the sensor or something

It'd be bloody funny if the bike packed up at this stage just before my trip.  ;D
I'm gonna give it a bit of a run tomorrow and see what happens. Is there a diagnostic test which can be done to see if there is an underlying fault?

Maybe run it by a dealer and get their opinion?

Good idea, I'll do that in the morning. Nothing runs smoothly does it?  ;D

I had the bike out for a short run this morning, no more than 10 miles and everything was fine. As a precaution though I did take it down to Bradford motorcycles, my local Kawasaki dealer they checked it out and concluded that everything was fine and that more than likely I just got some water onto a sensor. Bit bizarre, its not like I've never washed it before but hey, ho, it seems fine and that's good news!!
