GPS' are ok but you need to have some sense of direction and where you are going with it.  Some years back on a group ride in Ohio along the Ohio river, about half the bikes turned and went across a bridge into Kentucky.  We noticed this and found the nearest pull off to wait for them.  As they caught back up and stopped, we asked why did they do that.  Well, the GPS told them to do it.  Upon crossing the bridge into Kentucky, it told them to make a u-turn and go back into Ohio.  I've also seen GPS routing take the long way around.  I prefer to use them more in urban areas than rural, but that's me.  I use an automotive Garmin Nuvi something or other and just put a baggie over it when it rains.  I also mute it as it doesn't communicate with my SMH-10.  I'm going to start experimenting with the phone GPS as it does talk to my SMH-10.

very good points Jim,

Mobile phones /smart phones are now so massively developed and contain advanced GPS facilities

I like a combination of audio and visual directions
