As not  to hijack the mileage thread , since a lot of folk have got to 25000 miles ,or past that mark ,who has had the valves done ,what did it cost ,did it need doing , how far has any body gone without doing anything , does it make any diffrence if you don't bother ,how can you tell ,    :biker3:

the engine will start to get "tappety" when the clearances start to increase. associated loss of power and etc.

Hi had mine done at 24000 miles. 8 shims replaced, air filter etc and all pads cost £695. Most I have ever paid for a service in my life. Passenger thought it was smoother afterwards and I felt it had a bit more go. Did not want to risk valve damage by not doing. That would be really expensive.

It won't get "tappety" as the clearances get smaller, not larger, with mileage.  After they have been done, you might notice that the engine sounds crisper and just a little bit more metallic

ok i'll wait for my tappety noise to wear itself out

Modern shim under bucket systems don't really wear much and the valves don't recede into the seats like they used to on older machines. However they do bed in over the first few thousand miles so best to get them done at the 25k interval. Mine cost over £800 but that included a new rear tyre and front brake pads. They swapped a few shims around and replaced 2. The new sparkplugs cost more than the shims.

I had the clearances on my previous Vstrom done at 24K miles. Swapped a few shims, bought a few.
Checked again at 50K something miles, no adjustment needed.
It was still going strong at 90K odd when Imsold it with no further adjustment.
I think as Boomer said, once bedded in, OHC with shim under bucket are a fairly solid set up.
