Just thought I'd give a bit of credit where its due.

I purchased a Zumo 660 (unit only) with lifetime maps from a seller on Ebay. They advertised it as a new item, and when it arrived I had no reason to doubt it as it was in perfect condition. It worked well enough on my ill fated French trip, but would not switch on when I went to use it a few weeks ago, even after a full charge. After checking the warranty with Garmin they informed me that it was first used in 2010!
After several emails to Ebay and Paypal, Paypal found in my favour, and refunded the full amount I paid and told me to keep the Zumo! I sent the faulty unit to Garmin, and a refurbished unit with 12 months warranty was back in my hands within 3 days, all for the reasonable cost of £120. I sent them a further email with the serial numbers of the old and new units, and they re-stored the lifetime maps on the new unit.

All in all a great result and great customer service, well done to them!

Garmin UK are extremely helpful. The unit I got with the BMW was a Nav 1V which only had Spain, Italy and some other useless countries on it. I had the disk of Europe which came with it but no idea what the codes were until Garmin helped me out. Now I have full Europe.

As for your Zumo 660, I sold mine recently on Ebay and a potential buyer contacted me and queried the price I was asking pointing me to an Ebay seller who was selling them new at approximately the same price I wanted for mine second hand. I had a good look at the ad and the seller was actually advertising it as new but then lower down, much lower down in their ad they stated it was a refurb. So basically it was a unit which had previously been faulted and repaired by someone, probably Garmin and then re-branded as new. Talk about misrepresentation!

If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Shaggs, you did good.

Yeah it was a great result in the end Steve, and Garmin were first class as you say.
I still think the Zumo range are a little expensive for what they are, but the customer service is all part of what you pay for I guess.
The one purchased on Ebay wasn't even a refurbished unit, as on closer inspection, the battery in it was manufactured in 2009!
The Zumo was sold as brand new.

Just another con artist I'm afraid. This is the name of the seller on Ebay - obitronics  :asshole: :asshole: :asshole: :hammer:

Wolf, if you only had limited european coverage on the Nav 1V fitted to the K1600, I can only think that the manufacturer must have cut down the package since I bought mine (Nav 1V not K1600) in 2011, as that has all of europe on the database.

I could be quite wrong however, I am certainly no expert here. I have the "Lifetime" map updates disc that I received with the unit and have never yet used it, as the fear of losing the existing data far outweighs any perceived benefits that the latest maps would bring me!

Colin & Colin according to Garmin unless you install everything on the memory card from the outset, i.e. full mapping, if you then add another country or two as the previous owner did, (Spain and Italy) as that was the last tour they did it replaces any existing maps which were on the memory card rather than adding to them.

When I reinstalled the maps I ensured the memory card was sufficiently big enough to accommodate the full map DVD and any other routes I might create plus any music I may want to add to the card in the future, that makes sense to me and saves a lot of potential hassle further down the line.

And Colin, shame on you for mocking me for not being allowed out of the UK, one day my travel ban may well be lifted and then I'll be free to roam, roam I say, anywhere I want especially Spain, that's always been a country I've wanted to visit on two wheels.

similar story here, I bought my zumo 660 last year from a company advertising as new, when it arrived it was in a plain box ( no photos ect ) and 1 or 2 items where not included such as zip case ect , before I went back to the seller I checked with garmin and they confimed that the unit was a previous used refurb , I then went to the company who admitted the error and promptly sent me a proper new one in the correct packaging.

garmin sell these refurb units and the clue is that they are in plain blue or white boxes and have older maps, ebay retailers buy these units and then sell them as proper new !

So basically that's either creative marketing or blatant dishonesty! I think I know which one I would remind the seller of if it came to a dispute over a return.

as a seller when you list on ebay , you can choose, NEW, NEW OTHER or USED . new other is defined as "seller refurb", im sure some sellers would say that they just selected the wrong box

I purchased my 660 simply because I had heard the customer care was excellent ... not needed yet but good to hear 1st hand !!
