Hi guys and gals, going to look at a gtr on sunday, its a 2009 model in blue/black with 19000 miles. Just wondering what your advice would be in terms of what to look out for. Your help would be muchly appreciated.

Lonewolf

Hi and welcome.

Personally I would want to make sure that the tyre pressure sensors were working correctly, perhaps enquire if the battery's in them have ever been changed. If not they will not last much longer.

Check the front discs for warping, a common fault and also ensure that they are within the tolerances.

Take the seat off and see if there is any sign of rust where the front of the seat would normally rest against the rear section of the petrol tank.

The pre 2010 models didn't usually suffer problems with the pre load shock adjuster seizing, but check it anyhow and make sure it can be turned across the full range of settings.

Have a look at the condition of the regulator/rectifier.

Check for any excessive wear in the wheel bearings, the mileage is at a point where some of us have discovered they need changing.

You don't say whether its a private sale or a dealer, either way just have a good look at it, try and take a test ride if permitted and then after you've bought it, enjoy it.

Thanks for the advice, it is a dealer sale but unfortunately wont be able to test ride as the tyres are ready for replacing and they say are not road worthy. It will come with brand new tyres but he says people have different preferences and will let the buyer choose what they prefer. Any idea of the tolerances for the discs?

Very welcome here:-)

Don`t want the newer looks of the 2010+ model...?

Good luck anyway:-)

I do like the new features of the newer model, but budget is a factor. The bike does come with heated grips and a better touring screen so not too bad:) I will let you know how it goes and will soon (hopefully) be the proud owner of a gtr :)

stukwak

Yeah i have heard good things on the PR3's so am leaning towards them at the moment. Hopefully get them in with the deal:)

Lonewolf

I'm not too sure of the disc tolerances but hopefully someone on here will know and advise before Saturday. Failing that I'll have a look in the big GTR service manual I have and let you know tomorrow.

On a good note though if you are able to dictate the tyre choice I would highly recommend Mitchelin PR3's or even the 4's.

coman37

I think the minimum thickness is stated on the discs?

Thanks coman will have a look at that :)

I always budget that little bit extra when buying a second hand bike as there is always something that needs doing.

Bearing and brakes are the two things that pop to mind. Not too difficult to remedy as DIY if you have the tools.
