You bounder

There was a programme on the telly months ago about a Hurricane pilot who was downed and taken to the local golf club as he was bleeding profusely.... when he got there they took him into the bar and gave him a swift tot.. There were complaints that A) the noise of the dogfight was ruining the golfers swing and B) he was making a mess of the bar

It's not the motor that whines, it's the supercharger.
If you've ever heard a Meteor engined tank then you would know the difference. (Cromwell, Centurion, Comet & Conqueror)

Interestingly enough, the wonderful sound of the Merlin is totally lost in the cockpit, where it is just VERY LOUD and, at low engine speeds rattly, as the propellor shaft reduction gears chatter away.

My grandfather's "Merlin Ear" could attest to that.  He got a special addition to his war pension for losing certain frequencies in his hearing due to sitting in between 2 of them in his Mosquito...

Seemingly it was the reduction gear whine that hit just the right frequency.

Still, from the ground - best sound in the world
