TRIGGERHAPPY

The odometer showing 1650 miles, and the front tire are gone!!!!! Still some tread in the middle but down too the wear marks on the
sides, rear wheel doesn't show any wearing. This is the original BT-021 E with 42psi f/r. check the tire pressure often.
And from new it has fallen in on slow turns and made me use some force on the handlebars to countersteer so I don't end up in the wrong lane.
Driving on the main roads it handled great I thought.Thought this was normal for this bike,it was brand new :o

Put on Dunlop Roadsmarts today, and the bike are totaly transformed. Haven't tried the on main roads or highways yet,
but the handling at slow speed got soooo much better. And another thing I noticed are that it rolls with less effort.
Use the same pressure in the tires 42/psi.

The way the bike handeled with the 021's on,reminded me of my YZF1000 when i had a leak in my front tire valve.
The pressure went from 36psi down to 22psi. This where a small leak so it took some time before a become aware of it.
Did fall in on turns and ok in normal speeds, and the same wear.

Are the problems with the 021's due to wrong tire pressure? Should it have been rised?

Talked to the dealer to day,and he said that the original fittet tires on motorcycles are not the same as they we get to buy.
Have heard about it before, but when I have asked dealers about this they just shaked their heads and denied it.

Looking forward to have a longer test drive on the Dunlops

I've heard good things about the roadsmarts, so let us know how you get on. The oem tyres are good for the first few thousand. After that, dangerous imo

Odd isnt it...I hated the Briddstones that my FJR came with...so used the Avons , liked them a lot. May be it's just the GTR (that came with Bridgestones) handles better any how. They  the Bridgestones .seem real good to me..Having a new one fitted tomorrow. There is hardly any sign of squaring off at all...then hardly do any M ways or big straight roads...then again nor did I with FJRs ....! I have had no issues with grip or handling what so ever.

TRIGGERHAPPY

Did a 280 miles trip today. The weather was very nice, sunshine and no wind. Drove nice and easy most of the trip.
But on my favorite back road I had to push it a bit. The roadsmarts worked great. Much easyer to hold the line through
long bends. And more flickable in tight twisties. But the best where that they where much more stable at hard breaking on
tarmac with grooves and cracks in. Like the roadsmart alot, much more feedback and confidence.Have not tried them in rain yet,
but I'm quite shure they will be good enough for my chicken speeds on wet roads ;D Hope I get a desent milage from them.

Only 6 days to my holiday starts. 2500-3800 miles depending on the routes I choose. Praying for ok weather.

My local (free range) bike dealer/fixer reckons that the BT021s fitted to the GTR are 'specials'

Just seen a nail embedded in my rear PR3. Over the past few weeks the rear was losing about 2 PSI per week so I checked today and saw a broken off nail embedded. It's too far in to be taken out, so its either a puncture repair, take the risk and drive with it in, or get a new tyre.

Rear has already done 7000 miles and I reckon its good for a couple thousand more. Its not worth paying the £25 quid for a repair, only to have to pay it again to fit a new tyre on. Might have to bite the bullet and put on a new tyre

Hi Norman

Sorry to hear about the puncture  :( a similar mileage to mine before getting a puncture last Sunday.
The really bad news is the GTR1400 tyres has Z/ZR rated tyres and I think you will find they are the only motorcycle tyres that cannot have a permanent repair  :( :( :( - or at least any tyre dealer worth it's salt will not repair them. So its a brand new tyre  :( and mine cost me £157 (ride in/ride out)  :( :(

You can have a temporary repair ie get you home but speed is restricted to 50mph.

personally, I'd ride the bike with a puncture repair. As the tyre as only a few thousand left under ordered a new one.

142 for the rear plus fitting

It is a shame and a waste when a tyre still has good rubber on it and it has to be replaced. I had a puncture earlier this year and the tyre had only been fitted a month and had about 1000 miles on the clock  >:( :( >:( I have had permanent puncture repairs before and I don't have any problems with riding a bike that has had them done, it is just ####### unfortunate that  GTR has Z speed rated tyres ie speeds in excess of 150mph and there isn't or shouldn't be a dealer who values their liability insurance who would repair them - even though it is very very unlikely that we would ever get close to doing those sorts of speeds

I would never use a repaired tyre just dont think its worth the risk on a 160hp/300kg bike.

Kevin

If I could repair it by the side of the road I'd do that to get home but after that I agree, straight to the shop to have it changed.

Bloody hell ...how do you ride your bike 30mph tyre as square a a brick....Ive never got anything like that out of a Motor cycle tyre...amazing millage.
What tyre you using. I will try one next time , but dont reckon Ill get any where near that sort millage out of it.

After 7.5k on a rear PR2 on our GTR it still 3mm left in it; shame about the puncture. GS rear tyres do 10k.

Edit: I ought to add that was our European End to End so we weren't exactly hanging about.

Pilot Roads are dual compound tyres and have over the years and versions 2 and 3 gained a reputation for good handling, wet/dry performance and mileage. When I had the CBF1000 I had two sets of Pilot Road 2's and they both achieved around 12,000 miles. The wear on the tyre does depends on a number of factors and that includes your riding style ie smooth consistent riding

Yeah yeah I know that.....! But still seems an awful lot miles for one rear tyre & to be honest there all much of a muchness. But that is exceptional millage by any standard....
