I used the bike today. 60 plus miles from home to Chester, half motorway and half on A roads and then did 23 miles ahead of the Chester Marathon. short hops with short stops keeping ahead of the lead plice bike / time car.

At whta turned out to be my final stop, when I came to re-start the bike the key would not turn and i got screen mesage saying imobiliser fault. Then the igntion did tur on the display was blank and the die lights very dim.

I had the bike recoverd to home and put it on the charger.

After a couple of hours with the chrger disconected the ignition turns on ok and the display showed over 12 volts.

I then tried the starter and it donesn t tunr over but i get a clicking noise and the volts then drop to 9 with the starter released.

I was using the leds / beacon on the bike to day and to elminate those as  the problme i've isolated that circuit completely.

Thoughts please????

Battery !! or a bad earth from the battery.

A fully charged battery should be reading about 13.2 votls, 12 volts is a bit marginal..
Try an overnight charge, but dropping to 9 volts does sound like a shagged battery.

Will it start if you have the bike connected to the charger? Also I agree I think if it only shows just over 12v, that's not enough. Simple solution is to buy another battery, if that works, job sorted, if not, then you can start the painstaking potentially expensive route of auto electricians.

Hope you get it sorted quickly, I'm already missing those flashing orange lights.  :mfr_lol:

I assumed that trying to start it when connected to the charger would overload the charger?

My lights were the subject of much admiration today by the way!

Reckon the battery is goosed as said before.  Have you tried jump leads from a car?

Sorry to hear that old bean, and we all know how good I am with technical stuff and mechanics but I DO know that if you get that awful clicking sound its very simple .. get a NEW battery. You can charge up the one you have now all you like, you can take it for a 100 mile ride, but next week. next month you will go to start it and ... click click click .... just buy a new one and be done with it.

I wouldn't start it with the charger connected as it will overload the charger as you say. it probably is the battery, but it'll be worth charging the battery overnight and then try to start it the next day. if it starts then check the output voltage from the alternator to make sure it's doing its job. it might also be worth letting the bike get hot as I had a regulator on a vfr that only failed after it got hot, and was a pain in the ass to find. Hope you manage to sort it.

Shaggs, Patrick, you may be right, I have however started other bikes whilst they were connected to an Ultimate Charger and everything was fine.

The Fire Brigade turned up very quickly and the insurance company paid out reasonably promptly also.  :mfr_lol:

(That was a joke!)  :sweatdrop:

Once you put a new battery in, if possible check the running voltage with a multimeter, don't rely on the dash voltage as accurate.

You need to make sure the regulator hasn't gone and it overcharged the battery on your run today, as if that was the cause it would just wreck a new battery battery as well.

O.C.

It may be that you have drained the battery past the point of recovery, coupled with its age its maybe cried"enough"

The extra lights that you were running probably contributed, maybe you can check how much power they draw whilst in use

But as others have said.....change the battery for a new 'un

Hi Patrick you may recall I posted a year ago with pretty much the same thing. New Battery cured it.
