Any bright ideas? Removing a rusted on aftermarket can

My bike is coming up for its first MOT, and so I am trying to remove my Two Brothers can and replace it with the spud launcher for the test.

It has been on for two winters, and probably 25,000 miles and it *really* does not want to come off. It appears to have rusted itself to the down pipes, and neither heat nor a large hammer seem to show any signs of splitting it.

Any clever ideas?

I am going to ride it into work tomorrow without the joining clamp, nor the bolt by the centre-stand - just the can hanger bolt to see if that frees it up.

Failing that, anyone know what the MOT regs are for the exhaust? I have a baffle for the 2Bros, but there is no british standard type markings on the can of any description.

Cheers all,

Martin

Martin.  I never change my exhaust back and mine is loud.  Pop your baffle in and hope for the best.  At the very worst your get a fail with a free report test.

Just take it for the MOT.

Provided it's sensible and the bike looks cared for, there shouldn't be a problem.

Rusted/bonded exhaust joint can be eased by applying heat to the affected area

BUT BE CAREFUL WHEN USING FLAME / HEAT ON ANY PARTS OF YOUR MACHINE

Any heat applied should be done by ensuring that no heat is transferred to any other components of the bike, especially those associated with fuel

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I have tried heat from a propane torch, I have tried multiple, liberal coatings of WD-40, and still no sign of even a slight movement. I think I may have to take the whole system off, including the headers so I can be a bit more brutal on it.

Firstly however, I am going to call my freindly dealership general manager and see if he would be prepared to 'overlook' the baffled 2Bros still being on.

:mfr_lol:  :mfr_lol: where there's blame there's a claim!  Martin, unless you know your 'friendly manager' personally, I wouldn't back him into a corner and ask him (especially over the phone). He'll be inclined to say the official line and then you've had it. Stick the baffle back in and just take it! Chances are they won't fail it on 'not for road use' exhaust unless the bolts you've removed make it dangerous.  Good luck

mine has 3 MOT's with my beowolf Can  and has never been a problem , and not always at the same MOT centre

I have the 2Bros and it can be a PITA to remove.
The trick is to remove the silencer, then rotate the link pipe to the right and wiggle it up and down whilst pulling.
It does come off eventually.
The headers are stainless so are dirty but not rusted. The link pipe is also stainless.
It is a very tight fit.

I've got a 2Bros can on mine and although it doesn't say "not for road use" it also doesn't have a legal E mark either.

Like others have said stick the baffle in if you have one, if not you can buy them on ebay or elsewhere, there's the P1 and the quieter P1x.

Must say mine has gone through no problem so far.
