Quantocks...well , fancy you knowing them , I am from a little Village on the side of the Quantocks..Triscombe , between West Bagborough & Crowcombe to be precise. Bit further down now at Westward Ho! over looking the Sea. So A39s my Road & a cracker it is too. You ever ridden it?

Boomer

It's a small world. Is the Blue Ball still open in Triscombe?
I spent 3 years of my yoof in WestQuantockshead (St. Audries) so yes I do know the A39.
I've ridden the A39 a few times since but we left Somerset when I was 9 (1972).
The stretch from Bridgewater to Porlock is the best fun (especially that bit from Nether Stowey to St. Audries/WestQuantockshead).
Porlock is scary on a bike (too many big buses & trucks) but once yer past that it's a fun run all the way to Barnstaple.
However, the A39 is beaten by Dunster to Exebridge on the A396, but only out of season. ;D
Once the bloody caravans arrive everywhere is f**ked! :(

I regularly used to walk to Triscombe for a lemonade in the garden at the Blue Ball, and then head home.
Dunno what the landlord thought when a cocky kid first walked into his pub on a Sunday lunchtime with a grey cat asleep on his shoulders and asked for a large lemonade. By the time we left Somerset the landlord and I were on first name terms but I'll be damned if I can remember his name now. :(

I went to Watchet Primary School opposite the Catholic school. Both schools are gone now.

yeap Blue Ball still going ..bit flashy foody place now. Not the Dust covered Quarry mans drinking hole it used to be now Quarry closed. That's where my Dad worked. The Landlord back then was a guy called Dave Norsworhty. His kids were about same age as me. We used to sit in Porch on Sunday lunch times with Bag of Crisps & a lemonade , while Dad was inside pissing it up. Rev Davidson our Vicar used to call in to for a Pint after church..great Man, good old days.
Was at Westquantocks head this weekend. Christening in the Church there & quick pint in Windmill before ceremony.
Bit further down the A39 now living in Westward Ho! But still use the road often. Lynmouth Porlock & all way up through. Cracking road.

My Dad worked at Hinkley Point B on the control computers.
We moved there in 1968 and left in 1972.
Best 3½ years of my life.

I used to ring the bells at St Audries with my Dad.
I hated Sunday school there. The teacher was so up himself.  ::)
Was always fun to come back to the Windmill @ 2:30pm on Sundays when all the pissheads got kicked out.
We kids used to laugh at the antics of the pissed "adults".

A friend and I used to play in West Quantockshead disused quarry. (entrance just beside the Windmill)
There were several rusting 1930 trucks in there and a rusting steam traction engine.
Paradise for a 9 year old!  ;D

In the summer we used to catch adders on the Quantocks and take them on the bus to ICI in Bridgewater.
They kept them to make the anti-venom and we got £5 per snake.
That was a lot of money in 1972. My Dad earned £11 per week back then. <LOL>

Dave rings a bell but still doesn't conjure up a face. Oh well, it was 39 years ago.  :(

Given the proclivities of some people associated with churches I'd say it could have been a lot worse!

Days when we never imagined being near 50.....long Summer holidays Picking Wurtle Berry's for Gran to Make pies with them , delicious , Apple & Wurtle berry pie.
