Thanks Deb's. Apparently the 2011 only comes with the one transponder. I spoke with Portman Motorcycles in Guildford and they can provide and program for £240.52 inc vat - pity I don't have that amount of spare cash 1 week short of my Europe tour.

I will have to be VERY careful with the fob......

Npw I don't know if this is true but according to posts on the German GTR forum, where one of the members lost his fob recently, the ECU will only be able to recognize 2 fobs at any time.
Since the card thingy is your emergency fob this would mean that if you have another fob programmed to be recognized by the ECU one of the original fobs won't work any more.
If that is true you spent a lot of money and still have only 2 fobs.
Some of the guys with pre 2010 models reported that since they only used one of the fobs when the battery failed the battery in the second one was usually empty too. One guy even claimed that his second fob had to be reprogrammed because it had been sitting in a drawer with a flat battery too long.
So save your money and just put the card thingy into your wallet or somewhere else safe.
That way you can always start your bike even if you loose the fob.
BTW they also said that if you loose both you will also need a new ECU because they will need one registered fob to be able to reprogram the ECU.
The later you brake the longer you go fast.

Hi Mecki,
I read on another forum (sacrilege I know).....
As long as (1) of the two original FOBs is registered as present by the Smart ECU, an additional (5) unregistered FOB transponders can be registered with the Smart ECU as valid SPARES for your bike. Once an unregistered FOB has been registered by someones bikes Smart ECU it will only be good for that specific bike. As you approach the bike with the valid newly registered FOB, the ECU recognizes it and it then becomes the MASTER allowing you full access to the motorcycle. In fact each time you start the bike with a different FOB it registers that valid SPARE (secondary) as the MASTER (primary).
This is all from Kawasaki 2007 Service Update pages 184-204.

....and I don't have the card thingy as it didn't come with the bike (I bought secondhand).
I will have to be very careful while travelling and NOT lose the one I have :)

I got the 1 FOB and the "card" type FOB with my bike when I bought it new. I then bought a spare FOB ( not the card type ) and had it programmed by the dealer.
All 3 of them work on the bike without any problems. I know this because I use both "MAIN" FOBS so that one of them do not lie in a drawer all the time without being used.
So, I don't know about Germany, but my bike certainly recognizes more than 2 FOBS.

- if you make it a habit to carry both the transmitter FOB and also the key-card when you go touring (but of course kept in separate locations , eg , fob in your pants and key-card in your jacket) , it would be pretty inconceivable for the bike to be rendered immobile due to loss of one or the other.

- losing both is probably not gonna happen.

- therefore , maybe having a spare FOB made is not really necessary.
