Had the AA out to a rear puncture on my GTR1400 on Thursday evening.

I could not find the puncture while waiting, the only way we found it was by running his compressor, and listening and putting a bit of spit here and there.

He used slime. and it got me 15 miles home. I used it for my 130 mile comute on Friday. I am limited to 65mph and a recomended 500 miles.

All was fine, but the pressure was a little lower than recommended, so I decided to pull into Reading services and top it up. Lost about 8 psi faffing about with their stupid machine. So down to 30 PSI i limped to M4 J12 Sainsbury where there is a free air compressor. That worked fine and got me to the recomended 42 psi. Was stable all the way home.

When the puncture happened the tyre pressure sensors were brilliant, I got a warning at 27 psi, 23 psi, 19psi and as luck would have it I was able to get off the motorway and pull into the service station. They have also been usefull to put my mind at ease that it is not leeking.

Also - lucky that I carry a little tyre valve angle. You cannot get garage air lines ont the valve.

Why on earth did the AA use slime?

Won't this action have buggered up your TPS?

After wondering what the Throttle position Sensor had to do with it and than making a huge mental leap and realising that TPS also works for tyre pressure sensor...................

I guess slime was a quick fix. What options would you go for. I do carry a plugging kit on my Yamaha TDM 900, and spare tubes on my Tenere.

Interesting, while waiting, I did consider buying a can of tyre weld in the service station, but the information on the can only referred to cars vans and trailers.

I did discuss the potential damage to Tyre Pressure Sensor (TPS) and he said it was not an issue. Cetrainly after he had used it and filled the tyre, he had me ride around a bit to and the TPS was working. and they continued to work the following day.

Hi

I think the issue will be is a case of the TPS not being able to swivel inside the tyre as thy are designed to do - which will cause unnatural wear patterns on the tyre.

I also think it will be a pain to clean - if you can get to the wheel before they put the new tyre on (eventually).

Are you sure there is nothing in the manual about not using slime or foam fillers?

anyway - on a positive note - its temporary fixed - your still riding.

I would of told the AA guy politely were he could put his slime :whistling: I'm sure on the the can of slime you can buy it states tyre sensor safe  however I would not have used it :nono: would not have took the chance of having to replace another dam tyre sensor at the ridiculous cost of £250.00 including the programming to the e.c.u. would have told the AA guy to load my bike.. very carefully and take it home, then would have used plug kit and got the bike to a dealer for a tyre replacement, if the dealer bollocked the tyre sensor up he can dam well replace it.. ho! I used to carry a plug kit and small 12 volt compressor you can then always get your tyre replaced at your convenience.
getting on now...  but not as old as Rog or Geoff

there is a very strong chance that tyre slime weld will knacker your TPS, other gtr riders on other forums have learned this. Your TPS is a small black box attached to the underneath of your tyre valve, the black box has a small hole in it to sense the air pressure, the black box has some electronics and the battery inside, the slime gets in through the hole and shorts out the TPS, they cost about £170 to replace and the dealer has to re program it into the bike for you at a cost  , plus tyre removal charges ect, its just not worth the risk.
Personally id have opted for a plug or full recovery or if it happened at a convienient time id have asked for the back wheel  to be taken off and myseld dropped off at a local bike shop.

Had my nearly new tyre plugged a few weeks ago after a screw took up residence right in the middle of the back end and now take my compressor with me in the top box just in case it should lose pressure or happens again .. All appears well though and I would hope that unless it was a monstrous loss of Psi I could pump it up and get home or to safety.

Really pleased you got home safe with no major mishaps. Can you enlighten me please on the comment about the little tyre angle valve. I'm trying to get odd's and sod's together for an updated touring pack, you know, all the 'little' things that we find over the years are required when we are away from out tried and tested tools in the home garage.

I never had this problem of getting garage airlines onto the valve with the Wing so tips like this one are really useful. I have a small portable compressor in my travel kit but not the angled valve. I assume Halfords would be the place to get one?

Have a great festive break....
