- always ride with my panniers too. At the very least , there'd be a set of tools and puncture repair bits, plus water and a thermos of hot coffee.

- on longer rides, there'd be something to eat too. Don't want to bonk on a ride , the scenery will start to move on its own ....

I always ride with panniers on, and when HWMBO comes out to play ride with an empty topbox as well. She uses it to help her climb on board cos she only has little legs and leans on the box to climb up. You can see at RTTW this Saturday.

Yeah, I was yanking yer chains  :mfr_lol:  :innocent: but personally I rarely ride with panniers.
I do have a huge topbox that is always on and always has junk in it.
As for space if I should buy something,..if I can fit it in the topbox or on back seat (I always carry bungees & cargo-nets) then I buy it.
If not, then I either don't buy it or else I go home and get the car.  :tank:
With a 52 litre topbox it is VERY rare that I don't have enough space.

Keeping your panniers on means you can't filter so fast  :whistling:

No reason why the panniers should affect your filtering ability. The mirrors are wider than the panniers, if the mirrors don't fall off as you're filtering you're doing all right.  :whistling:

Rusty

I don't have a problem with Steve using his panniers all the time ... especially when he visits that cheese shop he has mentioned here and stocks up !!!!
It must be an old rat thing but I love strong cheese !  :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:

Four is fun.  Six is sex.

Rusty, we may have to include the cheese factory into our final leg of the journey. It's at Hawes not a million miles from my pad.

Well, my bike steers from the front. Also, in Italy the cars don't line up in a straight line so a certain amount of skill with slalom is necessary, so if it does fit through with the mirrors, it does still get very tight dragging my fat :asshole: round the bonnet of some vehicles...

Deffo easier without panniers - even if it is mostly psychological  :whistling:

Spooky !

Why log on today after so long away?  The day after my first ride at an IAM Club!!!!

Having enjoyed (in a-slit-your wrist kind of a way) the less than complimentary (though I do don't say unjustified; I wasn't there) comments about the high viz badge-boating-brigade, I felt momentarily dispondent.

However, I remembered and re-read a thread from January in which the leading members of the forum spoke well of advanced training and thereby inspired me to have a go. Thank you.

It's taken a while but I have now covered 5k miles on the new bike and am feeling quite up to speed again).

Declaration:  If/when I pass the test, I shall not be wearing an IAM hi-viz or showing the badge.  Also, I will not be riding a GSA.
If my riding  should offend it will (maybe) be because I am riding like a selfish berk and not becauce I am part of a particular brigade.
Just because many do it does not make it right. Just because many think it does not make it true.

Steve .. please do .. I shall make sure ONE of my panniers is empty !

All Advanced training is worthwhile so long as on completion you don't start to think that you are Gods gift to motorcycling.
Learning is something you start doing some time before your first breath and stop doing about 3 minutes after your last.

As for riding like a berk, we all do that on occasion.
The trick is to hold your hand up and apologise rather than try to justify it as OK because you are "Trained".
